Website Dev Log - 13

Long time, no see, but not really. I've been doing a lot behind the scenes in terms of the website. Making new art to use, browsing other websites for inspiration, planning the next Museum exhibit, etc.

Anyways, I just dropped a bit of an update to the main and about pages. Not much new writing, but you may notice all the little stickers I slapped on everything. I plan to make more stickers for eventual use with the blog, but I think I want to give it a bit of a redesign first.

There's two main categories of stickers: interest stickers and logo stickers. The interest stickers were originally designed to slap all over the About page so people could see them and know what stuff I'm into.

Logo stickers are totally original. Most of them are just small logos based on my username. The idea for these came from ZAQ's Sparkling Daydream album cover. Maybe after I make a few dozen more I'll recreate the cover somewhere on the site, lol.

There's a bit more that I haven't shown here, but you'll have to see for yourself using THIS EPIC LINK RIGHT HERE YEAHHHH. That's right, I remembered to include a link to the site this time.

Website Dev Blog - 12

That's right, it's time for another one of these! Did you notice I've been irregularly switching back and forth between calling these "dev logs" and "dev blogs?" Doesn't matter. The next Museum exhibit is open!

You guys remember Afterlife After Hours, right? That thing I made that you all loved so much??? Yeah, I remember it too, and in this exhibit you can explore every facet of it! From creation to cancellation to cremation to something else, just about everything I made for this stupid show is now detailed within this exhibit!

Please, check it out. Tell me it's cool. Tell me you like it. Tell me you read it. Even if you didn't. Even if you don't. Give me something to work with here. Don't let me die like this.

Website Dev Log - 11

The second of the Museum's exhibits, very obviously focused on Afterlife After Hours, is in development! I'm taking a different approach to it this time than I did for the first exhibit, one way being navigation.

The entirety of the site has had a navigation bar at the top, which gives direct access to all the pages within that section. Not anymore! Instead, AAH's exhibit will have Skulson's Room, a hub-like page where you can click on objects to access most of the other pages. You'll be able to return to it from wherever you go, but this encourages just a bit more exploration.

Accessibility be damned, this is cool as hell and I actually got it working so we're doing it now.

Another thing, here's a screenshot of my workspace when I'm doing all this. The applications are as follows:

Visual Studio Code, which I do all the coding in. It usually doesn't have to be a very large window as long as I can get to whatever lines I'm working on. Explorer only stays open if I'm working on more than one thing at a time, which is pretty often.

Obsidian, my beloved fancy text editor. You can't really see it here, but I plan out all the content of a page before I put it all in the html.

Vivaldi, my Chromium-based browser of choice. Nothing special to say about it regarding development. Window size usually fluctuates as I test mobile compatibility, even though in most cases most issues come from iOS webkit BS.

Website Dev Log - 10!

The Big One-Oh. Better have something good for this one. And I do! As of RIGHT NOW, the Museum and it's first exhibit is NOW OPEN!!! Focused on an unreleased project I made in 2020, this exhibit shines new light on a dead world, as well as what happened to it. Go check it out! You can go see it RIGHT now RIGHT HERE.

Website Dev Log - 09

The Museum, the largest part of the website, has been in development. I've got some fun surprises in store for how exhibits can change the website up a bit!

I really want the two main exhibits to not just be showcases of stories, but stories themselves. I'll figure out how that's supposed to work once all the code is done. I'm not even done with the first one yet, it's really taking a while... Hopefully it'll be worth it.

Website Dev Log - 08

The Gallery is a place where you can view a bunch of my art, new and old. I've got all the pieces sorted into groups based on what device I drew them on, which is pretty neat. You can click on an image to make it larger, and I've of course written up fun little details about each piece.

The ability to preview an image comes from LightBox3, which is now bundled into the site. It's pretty cool, and I can modify it to fit the themes of the site, which is extra cool.

Website Dev Log - 07

I joined the Apartment Webring with my website! A webring is basically a bunch of websites that link together in a chain, forming a ring. The Apartment Webring is inspired by Tomodachi Life, where residents have their own rooms and live in the one big building. The "apartments" in this case are gifs/pngs we make following a template, and then they're displayed on one big website: which you can view right here.

Of course, I themed my apartment after AAH, and joined as Skulson. I'm really proud of how it turned out! And of course, I can just change it whenever I want.

Anyway that's all for this one. Go tell me to play another gacha game, Eddie.

Website Dev Blog - 06

The Blog page is live! In fact, it has been for a while now. It utilizes the same CSS that I used for the Changeblog on the main page, which I remade to look a bit more interesting. I even used some JavaScript to randomize the quote at the top from a bunch that I like. However, page is still kinda boring, but that's ok because there's no way in hell anyone's gonna actually read these anyway. I'll make it cooler but only when I get a good idea on how to.

In other news, I've started some extra work on the assets for the Museum! They've been really fun to make, and considering how I have basically no plan for how that page will look yet, there will probably be more to make too. The size of the pillars signify how large the exhibit page will be, so the short pillars will probably be more of mini-exhibits.

I still have to figure out how I'm gonna make the gallery. I have literally zero ideas for it but whatever, I'll figure it out.

Website Dev Blog - 05

I've finished the About page! For now, anyway. As expected, it is going to act as a mini-profile, so there was a lot to consider going in. What do I want to share about myself? My identity? Not much of regard. My interests? Nah, anyone who visits the website will be constantly reminded of those. Oh, what a brilliant idea I had...

According to my About page, I'm a Risk of Rain 2 survivor now, with entirely custom skills! I wrote up the text (attempting to mimic the description structure of ROR2's skills), stylized it with CSS to mimic the skill lists from ROR2's character selection screen, and drew up the logos myself. Fun Fact: The font used here, Bombardier, was created specifically inspired by Risk of Rain's typography.

That's basically all there is to the About page though. The Blog page is next, which will probably have a bit more to it.

THE WEBSITE IS LIVE! That's right, you can access it in its current single-paged glory at art1st1x.neocities.org! There's not much to see or do at the moment, as I'm still working on everything else, but at LEAST look at it for a second or so! I put a lot hard work into it!

Website Dev Log - 04

Did you know that you can just see any website's CSS if you want? You can just inspect element, find where the stylesheet is linked, and then it's all yours. I have something certainly nefarious brewing...

Anyways, web dev is going well. Made some more buttons (can't ever have enough it seems) and have finished most of the layout for the home page. Below is some of the homepage's main content. The changeblog (get it?) is scrollable, which I'm happy I got working finally.

I've already put a lot of time into making everything look and feel good, as well as adding a lot of unnecessary details that I get a real kick out of. For example, the emojis you see above do something different when you hover over them, depending on which character the emoji is of.

I think I'm actually going to "release" the website soon. Hopefully that will be as easy as dragging and dropping my files into Neocities. All this time I've been developing locally on VSC, and that'll continue to be the case, but it would be cool to have something up for people to discover. For when that does happen, there will be a big disclaimer that it's a work-in-progress.

Website Dev Log - 03

When the day comes, I'll see to it that something of me remains.

Not something for you, or anyone else for that matter.

Something I can be proud of.

Things are looking up! And by up, I mean up on my monitor-- that's where the websites are. I'm cooking in this kitchen, and everything is on fire in a good way. Below is the header with logo on full display, with a marquee beneath it. The logo and page background are animated, by the way! I plan for a lot of movement, because it makes the site feel "alive."

That marquee font is from YutaONE, whose fonts I acquired for free a long time ago. I've been a fan of their fontwork for a while, and the only terms for commercial use is following them on Twitter. I'm happy to get to do something with them.

And look at this, my collection of buttons! A lot of them have little blurbs of text that display when you hover over them or links to other websites. (Most of them are also animated gifs that can't be completely appreciated with a screenshot, but whatever.) Out of the ones displayed here, I made 5 of them! If I don't reel this in soon, I can definitely see this getting out of hand. The more buttons the better though, right? I'll just organize them into marquees and spread them around a bit.

Website Dev Log - 02

I'm at peace knowing the stars will not remember me.

I will remember their shine from across cosmos, and they will never know.

In that way, I will never lose the night sky.

Look at these beautiful buttons I made! They're a combination of my hand-drawn art made to move in After Effects! My thick-lined style does NOT translate so well to a teeny tiny 88 by 31 box, but the movement really makes them shine!

I found a bunch of buttons online that I'll be throwing up on my site too. A lot of them are pretty generic-- but there's a few buttons of things I actually like. Maybe I'll make more buttons for my own interests.

And below here is the header for the site! Well, one of them. I plan on having variations of the header featuring certain characters depending on which page you're on. This is the main one, and it's just plain old me.

On the technical side, things are going well enough. No images for now, just to keep some surprises to myself for now. One thing I'll mention though, I found a zip of cool fonts on my PC collecting dust that I'll finally be able to put to good use.

Website Dev Log - 01

I don't feel like I belong anywhere,

so I will build myself a home.

Somewhere no one will find me,

made from nothing but logs and stone.

I'm making a Neocities website! Why? Mostly because I can. I've been getting better at web dev in the pursuit of my latest passion project (which is another website, albeit a much simpler one) and now that my abilities have improved I must torture myself with them. My ideas for this site are big, but hopefully something I can manage. I want to have things like blogposts and an art gallery, alongside a "museum" for my past projects. Something like this is definitely going to take a long time, especially with everything I have to learn about the culture surrounding Neocities so I can make my website fit in accordingly.

When all is said and done, maybe I'll start using it full-time. I wouldn't want to create something of this scale just to do literally nothing with it! Ha.

Anyway, I've got some art finished for it already. I've got a lot of assets I want to draw by hand, which is the easy part so I can do as much as I want first.

Back when I was a baby, my mom had two dogs named Bosco and Dallas. They were kinda like an extra pair of parents.

Bosco was a chocolate lab. He was really playful and loved me a lot, but he wasn't very cautious around baby me.

Dallas was a husky. She was protective over me like I was her own kid. She would have to reel Bosco in if he got too excited.
