Pare Watana (also known as Pare Watene) of Ngāti Maru, was famous for her beauty. Her chiefly status is confirmed by the rare huia (an extinct species of New Zealand wattlebird) feathers in her hair and her mere pounamu (a short, broad-bladed weapon made from greenstone).
Oh why, oh Mai?
Joshua Reynolds, Portrait of Mai, c 1776, National Portrait Gallery and The Getty

Mai, also known as Omai, (ca. 1753-1779) was a native of Raiatea, an island now part of French Polynesia. He travelled from Tahiti to England with Captain James Cook in 1773-1774, becoming the first Pacific Islander to visit England. Mai spent two years in London, where he was much admired within London high society. Renowned for his charm, quick wit and exotic good looks, he quickly became a favourite of the aristocratic elite. He returned to his homeland in 1777 and died there two years later, possibly from an infectious disease.
