gauze ripped from its roll as she tied off his injury — booker might have been just as immortal as she was, but he still deserved some medical treatment here and there. it'd at least help keep things easier to stitch up if the giant metal nail hadn't been immediately pulled out, so all that was left was waiting for his regeneration to reject the foreign body.

the smell of freshly-soaked earth surrounded them as the archaeologist took a seat beside him, back leaning against a large rock and settling her pack in the same place. she let out a tired exhale tinged with humor, allowing her eyes to rave over the expanse of trees and undergrowth ahead of them — seeing the rest of his friends again was a long time in coming, but they'd make it to the rendezvous before the year's end, at the very least.

lara stood in the center of the clearing, heaving chest beginning to slow as time passed with a hand wrapped around the shaft of her climbing axe. the tool was coated with the blood of the men who sprawled out amongst the undergrowth — all in uniform, and they would have tried to take her out if she hadn't taken the initiative first.

a steady drip of crimson brought itself to the forefront of her thoughts, eyes drifting down to stained boots and grass fed with remnants of those who'd deserved their fate. they'd made the wrong decision — trinity didn't care for them, and this far into the game, neither did lara — reduced to nothing more than nameless grunts who were delegated into doing all the hard work for the ones who just wanted to see the world burn. the only one truly out of place here was the drowned woman, who seemed to look on with something unreadable in her eyes.

( “ a girl so young shouldn't have that kind of anger in her eyes. ” @emotionsecho ) and it didn't leave easily. it was easy to say what you meant and harder to really understand, and lara doesn't entirely expect her to. she thins her lips into a line for just a moment, numb hands moving to stow her axe shortly afterwards, reaching out with a boot to kick the closest body over to take his ammunition from him.

“ neither should she have lost this much already. ” her retort comes after amoment or two, bending down to rifle through the corpse's belt pouch, searching for any spare magazines or tools that would make their search easier on them both. “ these people don't understand. they do whatever they want, without thinking any further. ”

religion had never particularly appealed to lara — well, at the very least, in the way of following it herself. she vastly preferred studying what the ancient brought instead of sitting amongst pews and staring at pulpits all day long; but that wasn't to say she didn't know anything biblical.

those sorts of extraordinary events were typically noted down as something so out of the natural order, like pillars of fire or stone commandments or even the death and resurrection of divine beings, and not the visage of a mud-streaked adventurer stumbling down the slope of a local hillside and opening the doors of a small church.

a light, uncertain smile graced her lips for a moment as her eyes flickered over the priest, clearly in the middle of some service preparation or something similar. she hadn't meant to interrupt, but she really needed somewhere she could stay for the night, however small, and perhaps even just a couple of hours of rest.

“ that's not very helpful, ”

lara sat back in her chair, polished wood cold against her skin as she breathed in the dust of a well-used library. mountains of books rested on one of the many tables in front of her, obscuring the other immortal from view and beckoning her closer with the hope of knowledge.

“ — and stories alone won't satisfy me. ”

they'd been here for hours, scouring the Croft archives for stories on some mysterious island — all mythology and folklore, but everyone had to start somewhere, even if things would have been far easier had her father recorded whatever small details they were missing. she was sure he'd told her something about it when she was a little girl, but what exactly, she couldn't recall.

she looked past one of her particularly tall stacks of books, peering out to study the man a table ahead of her. he had his own collection of books all sprawled out on the desks, and it was clear he'd been trying, at the very least.

piles upon piles of books sat next to her as she lay back on the couch, head resting just on the other's lap. it had taken a long while to comb through each and every mention of something regarding old graeco-roman records on slavic mythology, or that of sirens boasted in every kind of story, and any mix in between. she was determined to know more, and if comparing personal accounts to exaggerated stories would help, lara was more than happy to dig her heels into the ground and begin searching for those limited passages.

quynh's hand carded through her hair as she lay there, soft and soothing with every motion — the archaeologist turned a page all the while, with eyes darting across the parchment in an attempt to decipher what it was saying. translations always took a little more time than reading anything in english, and especially if she didn't know the original language as well as she did many others, but she would always manage to get there in the end. lara hadn't been taught all of those dead tongues for nothing, after all, and could make anything work with enough determination.

the area was drowned in bright lights amidst the darkness, seeping into every corner and bathing everything in red and purple. lara was sitting off to the side, just against one of the booths along the wall — catalina had dragged her out here no longer than two hours ago, and so it seemed, did several of her friends.

she'd opted for a light drink, fitting in with the environment even if she wasn't all that about alcohol. some part of this reminded her of the parties sam used to take her to, back in college, when she'd practically had to peel the archaeologist off the wall and onto the dance floor, or occasionally, just to meet and greet new people. lara wasn't exactly good at making friends off the bat — at least, not like jonah was. he could ask anyone anything and they'd usually do it for him, he seemed to have a way with people she didn't quite get.

her eyes flickered over to the woman who invited her, who was clearly waving her hand to try and encourage her to join in with the rest of them. they all stood by the microphones and the screen, and she studied it for a moment before shaking her head and turning up the corner of her lips.

i keep having these dreams from when i was a kid. / @emotionsecho .

“ nobody escapes it, no matter how old they think they are. ”

the thing was, immortality always seemed like an awful deal. learn all the secrets of the universe, yes, but you lost nearly everything about yourself — what you were when you were young, your first motivations, aspirations, everything, instead traded for everything that came after. there was a reason that nobody was quite meant to live that long, why she'd destroyed one of the many causes the second she could — there's some sense of empathy that can be shared with the man before her as a result.

booker wasn't exactly the type to throw those old secrets onto the table, so for him to offer this clue takes her a little off guard. still, she's nothing if not determined to ensure that he felt well enough to share — even if she couldn't deny being curious.

Quynh wobbled on her feet as Lara guided her down the hallways and into the bedroom. Her hospitality was admirable, yet as Quynh took a seat on the bed, she knew her efforts would be in vain. Sleep called to her, yet she would not let it claim her; she’d already lost so much time already. Besides, she didn’t want to dream of Andromache, who was likely still drowning, or any of the others.

“I’m not tired,” she lied. She ran her hands over the quilted comforter, nails digging into each groove. Someone had taken time and effort to make this — Lara herself, maybe? — and she smiled. Even despite all the years she’d drowned, people were still making beautiful things. “I wouldn’t be able to sleep even if I tried. Lady Croft, you don’t understand… I’ve lost so much time already. I don’t want to willingly sacrifice more of it if I don’t have to.”

titles had little place among friends — and while she wasn't sure if that's what they were, she'd still be treated like one. keen eyes scanned her for any missed injuries as she helped set the stranger down on the bed, smoothing out the last wrinkle in the sheets.

there was no way for her to understand what she'd been through — and likely never would be. she'd drowned once before, or come close to it, and lara would never wish that upon her worst enemy. ( well, maybe rourke. )

old floorboards creaked as the archaeologist stepped through the threshold, torch in hand and her head on a swivel. abandoned places were always her thing, so when she'd discovered this small cabin far off the beaten path, empty and aged, she didn't think twice about exploring inside, no matter what it contained.

so far, it was rather dreary. just old ceramics, a layer of dust thick enough to make footprints against, and windows covered in grime and mold. she stood in the center of what she assumed to be the living room, the beam of light studying crumbled charcoal resting inside the fireplace.

catalina's place was rife with energy, shared with several other mercenaries who went in and out as it suited them and their location timing. the woman in question had gone out a few hours ago — scouting, or shopping, perhaps — leaving just the two of them to their own company.

get along, she'd said ( or rather, implied ), and lara didn't quite know how well that one would go. she was friendly, always was, but the same couldn't really be said of leandro more times often than not. he brushed past her, hair disheveled ( probably just woke up from one of his naps, if there was anything to go by ) despite it nearly being an hour or two past noon.
