I never knew that Kerouac was born to French-Canadian parents and only learnt English as a second language from age 6. He spoke with a heavy French accent well into his teens.

Summary:
Northern Italy, Summer 1987.
Evan Rosier, a twenty–something art historian and restorer is employed by a convent in the small town of Civitella to uncover a mediaeval Last Judgement painting. Rosier, fed up with urban life in Florence and haunted by the memory of his friend Regulus, finds the idyllic slow-pace of provincial life cathartic.

I’ve been loosely following the whole NaNoWriMo controversy from my little sheltered corner of the internet and have to say feel very confused about the statement they put out.
And yes, we all hate folding the laundry and doing the dishes and spellchecking our work. But why deprive ourselves of the beauty and the (constant) struggle that is art and the creative process?

Hello darkness my old friend.
I read this a couple of years back when I was going through a smutty book phase. That phase didn’t last long. I really dislike how most heterosexual relationships usually involve 18 year old girls who get mixed up with much older, borderline psychopathic men who treat them like they have the same autonomy as a potted plant (the way they’re written, they probably do).
The smut usually gets pretty samey and unrealistic too (okay, a lot of smut is unrealistic I know, but an author can make it more convincing by writing characters with actual chemistry).
Still, the book that I always remember from that phase is this. It stood out somehow, although it definitely fits all the above mentioned tropes, and some even more problematic ones. Somehow, in my memory it always gave me very strong vibes. It has a distinct aesthetic, and the authors manages quite successfully to transport the reader within it.
I’ve tried reading other books by Penelope Douglas and couldn’t get past the fist chapter, to be honest. Again, samey plot and wishy washy characters that are overall unlikable and unlikely.
Now I’been in a reading slump since finishing a little life, I started a couple of other books which ended up in my dnf pile and read quite a few fics on ao3. It’s hard to follow something as good as A Little Life.
So I’m purposely following it up with trash. For science, of course. And for the vibes. 🤓
Might do a moodboard for it, too, we’ll see.
P.s. please check reviews before venturing into this book, it’s not for everyone.

My 10 favourite (and most re-watched) films of all time.
It’s fun to see how with almost all of these they were films I first watched as a child and now, still, with every rewatch, I see and appreciate something different in them as I grow older.
Massive recommendation for the last two - the Secret of Roan Inish (it’s on youtube free to watch), a truly beautiful film that feels like a fairytale.
Canone Inverso is an Italian production based on a novel. It was, unforgivably retitled ‘Making Love’ in the English translation, which alongside the saucy poster makes it appear cheaper than it is. There is ONE amorous scene in the film. The film primarily focuses on art, passion, rivalry, brotherhood, loss and grief and it’s all about a violinist with humble origins but great talent. Nowadays we would say it has dark academia vibes (to some extent). The soundtrack is by Ennio Morricone, need I say more. It’s near impossible to find this online, sorry.
P.s. I know I cheated ad Pride and Prejudice 1995 is a mini-series. I say it still counts.
Just finished A Little Life and, man, what to say.
First of all for a book that is 700+ pages long I did’t find myself glaze over or lose focus over a single paragraph or sentence. Every word in it felt necessary and absolutely heartfelt.
It is a heartbreaking book but not in the way I expected. There are some serious triggers in it - almost any trigger one could imagine - and yet rather than being shocked or disgusted by some of the things I read, I found myself relating so much to the characters and how they experienced these ‘triggers’. It made me realise that by the word trigger refers to the reader’s experience, and so inevitably takes one out of the world of the book. This book was so good that this didn’t happen, I was completely immersed.
I knew I would cry but I was surprised I didn’t cry when I thought I would. I cried because how real the character’s feelings were, and how beautifully the human experience is described and eviscerated in this book.
The title is right - this book is an eulogy to life, how transient and difficult and demanding it can be but also an ode to all the beauty and connection one can find in it.
Is this book for everyone? No.
Did I love it? Yes.
It will take a few days to digest it, metabolise it, mourn it even.
I finished the Six of Crows duology last night. Really enjoyed it, but not sure I’m going to be delving further into the Grishaverse at least for the time being.
Last week though I kept having A Little Life references pop up in different places in my life, repeatedly. It had been on my radar but wasn’t on my tbr, but the synchronicities made me buy it.
So yes, today is the day. This week is the week.
How do I feel? Scared.
Do I still want to read it? Hell yeah.
