He shrugged a little and smiled. “Guess it sort of evens out then, huh…” He ran a hand through his hair, hoping this wouldn’t turn awkward. “So, uh, it’s just you and your mom? Must be tough.”
“I’m going to take that theory and run with it.” She nodded. She blinked at the surprising question, then nodded slowly. “Yeah.. like I said, my dad skipped out on us when I was younger,” she said, repeating it for herself more than him, “and.. well, my sister left not too long after that.” She shrugged in an attempt to be nonchalant.Â
Tim raised his brows, surprised. “You have a sister? Oh but… she left too?” Crap, wrong question again. He rubbed his neck and swallowed softly. “I never had any siblings until Bruce adopted me so… I dunno. Can’t imagine growing up with someone else. Definitely would’ve been less boring though. Heh.”
Artemis shrugged again. God damn it, it was starting too look like she had a twitch or something. "Less boring, yes." She admitted with a smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. It wasn't like she could tell a perfect stranger about how her father pitted her and her sister against each other as children, fighting until they were both ragged. She couldn't tell him of the betrayal she'd felt when, even after all he'd done, Jade still went after their father after he left and left her and their mother behind. That was something she couldn't even say to her close friends, let alone a stranger. She felt that her eyes were speaking for her, however, so she turned her head away slightly. When she turned back, she gave him another eyeless smile, feigning enthusiasm and asked, "What's it like having a sibling now? Do you two get along?"
