Street art, pop art, even contemporary graphic design trends give me ideas for pairings and compositions in my outfits, home decor preferences, and gave me the idea to start creating a photo series where the pictures themselves look like collages made of various objects and fashion elements. In September 2017, I pursued a 9-day challenge of the Art Fast projectto start creating a photo series devoted to fashion elements as objects for being portrayed. Check out some first dibs.

My art fast challenge pushed me literally over the edge of my canvas, onto various new materials. I left my canvas, my paints and my painting tools to reconnect with long forgotten skills in stitching and explore new ones. Loosely woven textiles, sacred thread ‘mauli’ or 'kalava’, paper, recycled furniture parts - all took on new meaning. Pushing me deeper into the mind and heart of the immigrant condition, a subject I have been preoccupied with, in my recent work. The art fast has led me into a new dimension of creativity, a continuing body of work. For this, I am grateful to Art Fast. Thank you!

Concluded reciting Lalitha Sahasranamam for 9 days of Navarthri and understanding the meaning of the great lyrics in praise of Sri Lalithambikai, the Mother of the Universe. Going through this exercise made me realize how much there is to know and of which how little I know!

A message from Nikitha about her Creative Challenge.

First and foremost, I would like to thank Art Fast for giving me an opportunity to compel myself into spending some quality time to relax and relive things. Though I am no artist, I thank you letting me participate in this 9 day creative challenge. It has been a beautiful journey and my challenge of making an art journal has taken life. 

I have sketched whatever thought I had every day to my journal. It ranges from a quote that stroke my thoughts (the dandelion), an idea that I came across while surfing the internet (think art), My wishes and Everyday life. I hope to continue this journal entry and enjoy doing this process.

Succesfully completed the Art Challenge!

The rest of the images from the Navarasa series: Bhayanaka (terror/fear), Shringara (love/beauty), Bibhatsya (disgust), and Shantha (peace or tranquility). I'm so glad that I took up this challenge, it has given me a deep sense of satisfaction. It is after a really long time that I have pushed myself to do something creative. I also relished the process of clicking the pictures. I enjoyed run that I had after clicking the camera button on the tripod, getting to position, checking the composition and getting into character, all before the 10 second timer ends.

I have always imagined taking self-portraits but never pushed myself to do it. Thank you for Art Fast!

Kasturi Das’s Note on her 9-day creative challenge

On looking back at the 9 days of participation in ArtFast, I think it has brought about significant changes to my approach to learning Art. Earlier I was not so persistent on my Arting but these 9 days of Navrathri really had me sitting at my desk flipping through web pages reading and learning many things about Art. Initial 3 days I spent in studying works of famous artists. Then the next 3 days I started reading literature on the different techniques of painting especially oil and acrylic. Before this even though I had painted many pictures, I never knew that there were different kinds of brush strokes and the fact that the brush itself had 2 sides to it - the flat and the narrow...never had really given a thought to the basic fact that all my life I had been holding the brush in the wrong way!

ArtFast has, in fact, opened my eyes and helped me understand that Art is, in fact, a technical subject and requires deep study to become an expert. The final 3 days I painted the attached art piece. I believe that Goddess Durga is the epitome of Shakthi and this Goddess resides in all of us to give us the strength to face life smoothly. I dedicate my work to Goddess Durga who I believe helps me gain knowledge whenever I yearn for it!

Ashitha’s Fast in progress My project involves creating a collage each day using random magazines pages and cut outs. There is no specific theme that connects each day’s collage, just random thoughts, colours and expressions. I was a person who used to love doing craft work as a kid, but over the years I have forgotten to take joy in my simple creations. So this project is my personal challenge to get me back on track to happiness and be a kid again. Above is my collages from Day 1 and Day 2

This campaign meant a lot to me .. i wanted to do someting unusual so i wanted to overcome my fears of facing strangers .. and also i wanted to get closer into the public .. so i decided to go to strangers and talk to them about listening ... people were embarassed to see someone approaching them all of a sudden .. but to my surprise a bunch of girls soulfully participated in my campaign ... we talked about how in life a listener made a difference ... and this was a really happy day for me because i could overcome my fears and pass on the message of listening to them . And am looking forward to the upcoming days and the variety of experiences .

I started by replicating a Zentangle that caught my attention, but eventually introduced elements of my own imagination, into the artwork. Zentangles are taking much more time than I anticipated!
