Portrait of a Man, Said to be Christopher Columbus, 1519 Sebastiano del Piombo (c. 1485 – 1547), Italian Painted in Rome by one of the outstanding Venetian masters of the High Renaissance, this portrait purports to show Christopher Columbus. The inscription identifies him as "the Ligurian Colombo, the first to enter by ship into the world of the Antipodes 1519", but the writing is not entirely trustworthy and the date 1519 means that it haven't been painted from life, as Columbus died in 1506. — at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa, between 1826 and 1833 Hokusai (1760 – 1849), Japanese Katsushika Hokusai was one of the most talented painters of the last years of Edo period. Unlike most Japanese artists, his works had a profound influence on art outside Japan. When his woodblock prints reached Europe, it had a very significant impact on many artists, particularly the impressionists. Over the Town, 1918 Marc Chagall (1887 – 1985), French "I suddenly felt as if we were taking off. You too were poised on one leg, as if the little room could no longer contain you. At the Moulin Rouge, c. 1892 Henry de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 – 1901), French Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, more than any other artist, epitomizes the spirit of Montmartre, one of the most colorful and vibrant quarters of Paris. Physically disabled since childhood, he was unable to participate in the typical pursuits of the aristocracy from which he came, preferring to find solace and inspiration in the brothels, theatres and cafes of Montmartre — at The Art Institute of Chicago.

Metamorphosis of Narcissus, 1937 Salvador Dalí (1904 - 1989), Spanish. Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection in a pool. Unable to embrace the watery image, he pined away, and the gods immortalized him as a flower. Note a decaying stone figure to the right of Narcissus. — atTate.

The Card Players, c. 1894 Paul Cézanne (1839 – 1906), French "The Card Players" is a series of five oil paintings by Cézanne. The versions vary in size and in the number of players depicted. Cézanne also completed numerous drawings and studies in preparation for "The Card Players" series. One version was sold in 2011 for a price variously estimated at between $250 million and $300 million, making it one of the most expensive work of art ever sold. — at Musée d'Orsay (officiel).

Red House, 1932 Kazimir Malevich (1879 – 1935), Russian A theorist and ardent proponent of non-figurative art as a supreme form of human creative activity, Kazimir Malevich is best known among the general public for his "Black Square" painting. The Battle of San Romano Part 1, 1456 Paolo Uccello (1397 - 1475), Italian This is a part of the battle of San Romano, Toscana, Italy, that was fought between Florence and Siena in 1432. The central figure is Niccolò da Tolentino on his white charger, the leader of the victorious Florentine forces, who is identifiable by the motif of 'Knot of Solomon' on his banner. — at Galleria degli Uffizi.

Europe After the Rain II, 1942 Max Ernst (1881 - 1976), German Ernst’s works were banned in Nazi Germany, he was wanted by the Gestapo and took refuge in France. When WWII began, he was sent to a French concentration camp for aliens. He escaped and was returned to these camps a number of times. When the Germans occupied France, Ernst managed to flee to the US. Given the time of the work, one hardly needs any explanation of its meaning. — at Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art.
