mikasa and annie are two very different characters but they’re also really similar, not only in personality but also in experience and interaction with other ppl. and because aot only does surface level emotions and bc it’s in picture format a lot of the internalized/deeper feelings are left up to the reader’s interpretation so here’s mine:
1. they’re both quiet characters they don’t talk much, prefer observing
2. they’re really mature compared to their peers. in the beginning the rest of the 104th seem hopeful, optimistic, naive and juvenile but these two seem to know all the things wrong with the world and they don’t underestimate it
3. they’re incredibly perceptive especially when it comes to each other bc they recognize that they’re the same (lost girls)
4. annie is the only person amongst the 104th that poses an actual challenge to mikasa and vice versa (in most aspects — if not all — not just fighting)
5. for that reason there is a sort of quiet respect and understanding between them (LG)
6. even while not being friends they make a great team and are capable of being in sync w/o words (ex: when sasha and connie missed their titans in the basement in s1 and m & a instantly took one each; in one of the movies when they save historia from those kidnappers) their combined skills flow seamlessly together
7. both are part of a trio made up of two dudes that seem way closer to each other than w them
8. thus it’s not crazy to think that they’re also quite lonely and seek warmth and understanding as well
9. they’re both really attached to a person that stands as their last/only family member, that marked them significantly forever and they see those ppl as their lifelines hence vowing to protect/come back to them no matter what
10. they’re unable or reluctant to go against said family member (mikasa’s bond/annie’s training)
11. bc of their distance w their respective trio + everyone else around them they might also be touch starved which could explain (or warrant) they’re penchant/inclination for physical touch (doesn’t have to be sexual)
12. once they’re able to meet and talk in a somewhat neutral/friendly way they both realize they get along quite well
13. even physical differences between them are contrasted: M black hair A blonde M is tall as shit and A is short af M red scarf A blue eyes M fiery gaze A cold icy stare
14. also there’s just a lot of tension between these two from the get-go for no reason lol
15. final point annie is shorter but older than mikasa so if after all that that doesn’t enhance how hot this pairing is irdk what can tbh
