“Might do you good to head to bed.”
Arthur scoffed at the man beside him, drink sloshing in hand. They were settled along the empty bed of Dewberry Creek, side by side before a small fire. It was a clear, tepid night – they had a tent set up behind them, but were perfectly happy sitting out underneath the stars.
“You tryna get rid of me, Charles?”
Charles breathed a laugh, shifting on the bedroll they’d dragged out. His arm brushed Arthur’s bicep. “I’m trying to help stave off that headache you’ll feel tomorrow.”
Arthur smiled, falling back on his elbows with little grace. His head lolled about on his shoulders, heavy and spinning.
“I ain’t drunk, Charles, ‘m jus’… relaxin’.”
Arthur shot his companion a look, watching his face carefully. He saw amusement there, barely concealed, and it made Arthur’s chest warm. He also saw some tiredness, etched deep into the lines beneath dark eyes. Arthur could hardly blame him.
It took too long for him to look away, caught up as he was in Charles’ expression, his tilted lips, the way the firelight cast shadows across his face. It made him wish for a camera. Arthur looked instead to the stars, wondering, briefly, if he had a good enough look to sketch the image in his journal later.
