“How I always get my way.” Claire looked up at him with an innocent expression, batting her eyelashes. He set her down and she set her hands on his waist, pulling him further into the room. “How would you like to celebrate?” She asked, finally smirking and letting him go. Claire sat down on the bed, kicking her heels off and laying back. “I have some ideas, but I’d rather hear yours.” 

“My ideas are the reason you ended up pregnant in the first place,” Toulouse reminded her, raising a brow as he watched her lay down. “Are you sure you want to give me that power?”

Toulouse kicked off his own shoes, walking closer to the bed and leaning over her. Placing his hands on either side of her, and leaned forward just enough to kiss her.

“I couldn’t tell you, you are one lucky bastard,” Claire smiled and tugged gently on his lower lip. “Fine, we can go home, but I’m keeping your jacket.” She climbed off of his lap so he could stand and let him pull her out the door and into the car, which was thankfully warm. “I’ll keep my hands over here…” she slid into her side of the car and closed the door, buckling her seatbelt and hoping the ride would go quickly. 

Silence settled over her during the car ride, too many thoughts flew through her mind. When they pulled up to the palace, she got out of the car quickly and waited for Toulouse before walking up the front steps and up to their room. “Don’t you dare even think about carrying me over your shoulder,” she warned, pointing her index finger at him as if he were a child. “Just get up to our room fast.” She flashed him a smile and hurried down the hall, though he would have been much faster than her.

Toulouse watched her as they arrived back at the palace with an amused grin on his face. He wouldn’t have thrown her over his shoulder anyway now that he had known she was pregnant. They’d have to be more careful now, though he knew that she wouldn’t want to be treated like a china doll, either. He could still be a bit rough with her while being safe at the same time. Before he could answer her she was hurrying away, and all it took was the count of three on Toulouse’s part before he hurried after her. One... two... three... He figured the least he could do was give her a head start. 

He caught up to her just as she was about to enter their room. Scooping her up in his arms, he held her tightly, opening the door with his free and and carrying her inside. “Tell me again how you plan on getting your way?” The blond teased, closing the door behind them and letting her down slowly.

“I think I’m happy too,” Claire’s eyebrows rose at her own words. She had been freaked out when he freaked out, but now that he seemed so calm, as if this were good news, she was relieved. She wasn’t alone, he wasn’t leaving and their baby would have a life that was better than hers. It would have two parents that loved him or her, and that was the most comforting thing that she could have realized. “I’m shocked it took this long,” she smirked as she kissed his neck. His reactions to her had always been her favorite thing, they both made it known that they wanted the other. 

“We’re going to be married, too. You’re going to have a wife. And a baby,” her lips tugged into a smile, kissing him more passionately this time. She wouldn’t have a life close to any of this without him. Her hands glided down his sides to slip under his shirt, pulling him closer to her. “Now you can take me home to celebrate, or we can celebrate here. But I’m getting my way either way…je te veux.”

Toulouse was glad to hear her say that she was happy. He had mostly been worried about the fact that Claire had been saying for a while that she didn’t want to have children, and now that one was being brought into the world without planning, that had been the more shocking part of it. They could certainly afford to take care of the baby financially, and they had plenty of time to dedicate to the baby, so he wasn’t worried. “That’s a fair statement,” he chuckled. “Mmm... How did I get lucky enough to make that happen?”

Toulouse nearly pulled away when he felt her hands slip under his shirt. Not that he wanted her to stop, but he knew that he would want her even more if she kept doing that. “Is that so? I think we should celebrate at home. We have more freedom there. But that’s going to require you to get up, and come back to the car with me.” They had driven to the village themselves, Toulouse having wanted to go for a drive anyway. He waited for her to stand before standing himself, and gently tugging her in the direction of the door.

“September. I like September better,” Claire nodded. “We can choose an actual day later, but at least the month. I just forgot that we had even chosen anything, I think I’ve been overwhelmed the past week or so.” It was hard not telling Toulouse everything that was going on. She had so much anxiety before going to the infirmary, plus she had enough morning sickness that she was surprised he hadn’t noticed. Her thumb ran along his cheek, pausing as she waited for a reaction. “You’re happy,” she smiled but couldn’t hide the surprised tone in her voice. “We’re going to have a baby. Maybe in time for our wedding,” she teased, though she could picture it. It really did sound perfect. Her arms wrapped around his neck, melting into the way he kissed her. Toulouse was so genuine, it was as if she had never told him the first time around. 

“Is this real? Are you actually happy or are you just pretending for me?” she asked, her voice soft. Still, to convince him she pulled away and dragged her lips down to his neck, biting lightly at his skin. “Tell me the truth, mon amour.” 

“September.” It felt official, almost, now that a date fell from their mouths. He smiled softly, liking the idea of a September wedding. “That’s understandable, I can’t blame you for that.” He wished she would have told him sooner, so that he could have taken some of that anxiety off of her shoulders. Berlioz had asked him too, if Claire was pregnant, and he had ignored his brother’s intuition. Maybe she wasn’t when he asked, but it seemed ironic, now. When Claire asked if he was actually happy, Toulouse laughed and nodded his head. 

“I’m not pretending. I’m happy.” The smile on his lips turned into a smirk at how she kissed him, his hands moving up to her hips. “And you’re shocked that you’re pregnant when you do things like this...” Then, it hit him. He wasn’t sure how, or why, but the weight of this news hit him, and it finally dawned on him. “Holy shit... we’re going to be parents...” Pulling back to lock his eyes onto hers, there was a brief expression of enlightenment on his face before kissing her again.

“One. One year, maybe,” Claire compromised. “I don’t remember what we decided on! Did we choose a month? A season? A day?” She was pretty sure they hadn’t, but she also avoided the subject as much as possible. “You should have seen your face,” she finally gave a small hint of a smile and tried not to laugh. “I don’t know. Guys leave when their girlfriends get pregnant. I’m not your girlfriend but it doesn’t change that much- I have very little faith in people, if you haven’t noticed.” And Toulouse knew her better than anyone. “I enjoy your company? Are you sure?” Claire got to her feet, moving to a corner of the coffee shop. It was darker, more secluded, and nobody was around much less paying attention. She motioned for him to follow, waiting for him to get there and settling herself on his lap. “So…I have something to tell you.” 

She took a breath and looked in his eyes, which calmed her down the way it always did. Her fingers lightly touched his hair, pushing it out of his face. “I know this is shocking and I’m not sure how you’re going to feel, but…” she smiled softly and moved her thumb along his jawline. “I’m pregnant. And I love you. Now kiss me.” 

“Well, roughly a year from when we mentioned it. So... next August? September? I think it would be fitting to have it then, but we could move it if we needed to,” Toulouse suggested. “Alright, alright, I thought we were forgetting about that?” he shook his head, trying not to laugh as well. “Hm. If I wanted to leave I would have. But... unless my eyes do deceive me... I’m still here.” Smirking at her slightly, Toulouse ran a hand through his hair. “I don’t think there would even be a baby if you didn’t.” Watching as she got up and moved, he followed only after he was beckoned, wondering what she was doing.

“All right... what is it?” He asked, looking up at her as if he had no idea what she could possibly be wanting to tell him. Giving her a soft smile, his hands ran slowly down her legs in a comforting manor, to relax her. Eyes widening, Toulouse stared up at her. “You’re pregnant?” The words fell from his lips as if they were genuinely the first time he was saying them. He didn’t say anything else before obliging to her request, kissing her happily. “We’re going to have a baby...”

“Good because I was serious about waiting three to five years before getting married.” Claire wanted to see what his reaction was; she would much rather have gotten married within a year or so. She wasn’t sure if she deserved or wanted to ever feel like a princess, but if she was ever going to it would have been on her wedding day. “You’ve never knocked a girl up before?” The thought made her laugh a little, though her jealousy also spiked. She’d forgotten that Toulouse had even been with any other girl before her. “Don’t answer that. Most people do tell their- whatever- while out! It’s a good surprise for more people.” She should have known better, but she also didn’t want to be at home when she told him. 

“You want me to tell you again? Can’t I just do it now?” She pouted at him, maybe she could change how she worded it or be less blunt about it. “That’s true, you did give a warning. It must have been because the sex was so good. You’re welcome,” she smirked. “So you’re not leaving or anything?” 

“Okay— yeah, well, maybe five years is a bit long. Three... we can talk more about it later.” Taking the fact that Claire was pregnant out of the equation, Toulouse still thought that five years was long, but three surely sounded at least a bit better. Still, he would rather marry her sooner than later, the more he thought about it, whilst still giving them time to plan. “Besides, didn’t we already talk about when we wanted to get married? Are you getting cold feet on me?” He teased, laughing softly. Whether or not she wanted to hear his answer, it would have been a no. 

“I never said it wasn’t a good surprise. Now that the initial shock has worn off...” He was already getting accustomed to the fact that she was pregnant. “Don’t give me that face,” he said, narrowing his eyes at her playfully. “Mmm... that was exactly it.” Pulling her into him, Toulouse kissed the top of her forehead. “Where would I go? Even if there was an answer, I wouldn’t choose it. You’re stuck with me, whether you like it or not. Though clearly you enjoy my company.”

“It doesn’t matter to me, but it probably matters to your family. They’re not like my family.” His family actually had a name to uphold, they weren’t evil. Her father would have laughed if he knew she was even with someone and he definitely wouldn’t care. “You won’t marry me tomorrow, don’t be ridiculous. And we have to go back home eventually,” she sighed and looked around. “Most people celebrate. Why are we so different from everyone else?” She wasn’t sure why she was bothering to even ask, when she had never been normal in relationships to begin with. Claire turned and ducked into a coffee shop that had a fire going, just to appease Toulouse. It also allowed her to give him back his coat. 

“I understand being shocked. I’m shocked. I was surprised a week ago, I was positive it couldn’t be real.” She sat down on the couch nearest the fire, resting her head in her hands. “We just had to go to the library that day. You know this is your fault, this is what you get for throwing me over your shoulder.”

“Yeah, well, I’ve never exactly done what my family wanted. I’ve always gone against the grain, practically. Besides, it’s not like I just met you last night. That would be one hell of a story to explain.” Toulouse joked, cracking a small smile. “I would too. But, it wouldn’t exactly be a big wedding. Probably just us. Not very fancy, and I think you deserve better than that.” In all honesty, Toulouse would want to give her a nice wedding. Personally, it didn’t matter to him if the wedding was huge or small, but he wanted it to feel somewhat normal. 

“Well... most people don’t tell their significant other that they’re pregnant while they’re out at a restaurant. So... when we get back, why don’t we pretend that didn’t happen, and we can redo how you tell me?” Following her inside, he placed his hand on her lower back, guiding her. “Hey, I warned you that I couldn’t prevent this from happening. You had a fair warning.” Smirking softly, Toulouse shook his head.

“I won’t get sick,” Claire huffed and didn’t bother slowing down. She did regret not bringing a jacket, it was too cold outside to not have one but she didn’t wan to admit that now. Especially when Toulouse had reminded her to grab one and she still hadn’t. “Because I’d be a shit mom? We even talked about this!” 

He had been right, and that slowed her down a little. She had never wanted to be in a relationship at all, never envisioned herself with a ring on her finger. That was a fairy tale reserved for other normal people, but not her. “Toulouse,” she warned as she felt his hand in her back pocket. She groaned as she had no choice but to turn around. “I’m not crying!” Claire quickly wiped a tear from her cheek. “I don’t know what you want me to say! I’m pregnant. We aren’t married, we’re barely engaged, and now we could have a baby. Or we don’t. I don’t know. I don’t know what you want from me.” More tears streamed down her face as she spoke and she pulled away from his hands adamantly. “I knew you wouldn’t take it well, I just didn’t think you’d take it that badly.”

“No you won’t, stop saying that. No one really knows what they’re doing when they have their first kid, anyway.” Toulouse knew that he was going to have to do some serious damage control to calm her down, since he was the reason she was so upset in the first place. He disregarded her warning before turning her around, giving her a look when she clearly lied to him. “I’m not asking you to say anything. I just want you to listen.”

“Look... I don’t care, if we’re not married. If it matters to you I’ll marry you tomorrow. I care about you, Claire, and I care about the fact that you’re pregnant.” Toulouse sighed as she pulled away, moving closer to her and placing a hand on her shoulder delicately. “I want my beautiful fiance to go back inside, where it’s not freezing, and for her to be healthy, and not get our baby sick either.” He wasn’t even sure if that was possible, but if it was, he didn’t want to take any chances. “I’m not mad, Claire. I’m not upset, or disappointed. I’m shocked, sure, but... that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want to have a family with you.” Taking his coat off, he wrapped it around her instead.

“At least I didn’t handle it like you are.” Claire stared at him, hoping maybe he’d see a reflection of himself in her eyes. One of him freaking out. Toulouse ran after her quickly enough that she didn’t have the chance to take a breath before he was speaking again. “I’m not a child, I can handle the cold.” Tears stung her eyes, which only made her more angry. She wasn’t weak, she didn’t cry, it was stupid hormones that was making her upset. “Yea, I don’t believe you. I think you’re upset and freaked out and maybe it’s not that you don’t want kids.”

She started walking down the sidewalk, keeping her head down as she stared downward. Her focus was on moving one foot in front of the other, until they bumped into something or she had to stop. “I think maybe it’s that you don’t want kids with me. If you were engaged to anyone else, your reaction would have been excited. Thrilled.” 

Toulouse instantly regretted freaking out about this announcement, wishing that he could have taken it back. It would have been a bit different if they were at home, or somewhere private. He was fairly certain he still might have freaked out, but it wouldn’t have been that bad, at least he assumed. “I didn’t say you were, but I don’t want you to get sick.” When she said that she wasn’t sure it was the fact that he didn’t want kids, Toulouse rose a brow, confused. 

“Claire, you know that’s not true. Why the hell would I not want a family with you? Well, we’re never going to be able to test that theory because I don’t want to be with anyone else. I never even wanted to get engaged, until I met you.” It wasn’t hard to keep up with her. Putting an arm out in front of Claire to stop her from moving, Toulouse stuck his hand in her back pocket and spun her around. “Would you wait a second? Claire... ne pleure pas.”
