Ex student Carmen Kirkby in the Plymouth Young Contemporary Exhibition, having just completed a foundation course at PCA:
“My work is an indirect response to moral standards and the existential. There is a balance between resentment and encouragement in regards to what our planet is becoming; the hangover of industrialisation and patriotism, and the stubborn force of tradition. My work has also been accepted into this year's Young Contemporary Arts exhibition, which will be exhibiting in July.
In the first couple of weeks of the Foundation Diploma I felt uncomfortable about how much the course differed to A-level. However I then learnt how beneficial autonomy is for my practice - it sounds cliché, but I can’t imagine the state my work would be in if I hadn’t done this course. It’s a vital year for realizing yourself, giving you both a taste of higher education and support towards achieving your goals.
My advice for anyone looking to study here would be to forget everything you have been confined to in your education, and don’t be fixed or stubborn; if you’re not willing to be open to new ways of working and seeing, then you’re not going to develop as a person or artist.”

For those into illustration and animation...
It's simple and easy to become skilled at something, it's just the consistent practice which is difficult. Nowhere is this more obvious than in drawing and illustration, where an understanding of proportions and proper technique can turn a crude circle with lines into a detailed face.
Practice makes perfect!
