La Belle et La Bête - Beaumont’s A French Fairy Tale or Beauty and the Beast Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont first published Beauty and the Beast in 1756, as ‘a tale for the entertainment of juvenile readers.’ It first appeared under the title of La Belle et La Bête in response to the earlier, much longer version of the story by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve (1695 – 1755), which first appeared in 1740.

Although similar in the overall plot, Beaumont changed many aspects of Villeneuve’s original, making it more suitable for younger readers. Much of the lengthy back story of Belle and Beast was omitted as were many of the characters. It is also worthy to note that the urban opening and the social class of the characters was highly unusual in fairy tales of the time and therefore occupies a unique space in folkloric storytelling. This ability of Beaumont, to adapt and re-appropriate pre-existing narratives, has ensured the tale’s continued popularity – with her version still the best-loved variant to this day. 🖱️ https://www.pookpress.co.uk/beaumont-beauty-beast/

Nouveau Louvre : premières images

L’avenir du Louvre se dessine dès à présent en images. Le mardi 28 janvier 2025, le Président de la République, Emmanuel Macron annonçait au Louvre, sous le regard de la Joconde, les grandes lignes d’un historique projet de modernisation et de transformation du musée, afin de l’adapter aux enjeux de demain. Les objectifs de cette renaissance sont clairement posés : renouveler le lien avec le public, améliorer le confort de la visite, repenser les parcours, réorienter et mieux répartir les flux, moderniser les équipements techniques, restaurer le patrimoine bâti et le patrimoine naturel, mieux connecter le Louvre à la ville. The Vitruvian Man is a famous drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, the Italian Renaissance artist and scientist. It shows a man in two positions, with his arms and legs spread out, inside a circle and a square. The drawing is based on the writings of Vitruvius, an ancient Roman architect, who described the ideal proportions of the human body. Leonardo wanted to explore the relationship between man and nature, and how the human body reflects the harmony of the universe. He also used his own measurements and observations, as well as the works of other artists and scholars, to create his own version of the perfect human figure. The drawing is very detailed and precise, with notes and calculations in Leonardo’s characteristic mirror writing. It is considered one of the most iconic images of Western civilization, and a symbol of the Renaissance spirit of art and science. It's now kept in the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, Italy, but it is rarely displayed to the public because of its fragility and sensitivity to light. It was loaned to the Louvre in 2019 for a special exhibition marking the 500th anniversary of Leonardo’s death.

It is all that, to be sure, but what is lost in the whole of our modern life, including our understanding of religion, is something even more fundamental, without which religious ideas and practices lose their meaning and all too easily become the instruments of ignorance, fear, and hatred.

What is lost is the experience of oneself, just oneself—myself, the personal being who is here, now, living, breathing, yearning for meaning, for goodness; just this person here, now, squarely confronting one’s own existential weaknesses and pretensions while yet aware, however tentatively, of a higher current of life and identity calling to us from within ourselves.

This presence to oneself is the missing element in the whole of the life of Man, the intermediate state of consciousness between what we are meant to be and what we actually are. It is, perhaps, the one bridge that can lead us from our inhuman past toward the human future."

She was twenty-something when she got swallowed / by Los Angeles, before Los Angeles / was about the bustling.

The La Brea Woman, they call the female / bones unearthed from a warm Ice Age. It was / only around sixty degrees then.

She's got a piece missing from her / skull, from a blow to the head, probably, / because violence doesn't have a clear beginning.

In 1970, they transported her / body and some freak took her / femur, because everyone needs a taste.

Millions and millions of bones have been recovered / from DTLA's everbubbling asphalt; only hers / got a digital rendering of what she must have / looked like, if she fell off a mudflap.

What must it be like to be forced to / wait for gunk to cover you like a sticky shroud, / and then be subjected to relive it 9,000 years later / by people you don't understand?

Did you know the tar pits are just / a few inches deep? Death comes in / the form of hungry predators / and your own starvation; the dark / never does any of the killing.

And did you know that five minutes from the pits / is a BevMo! where you can buy as many bottles / as it takes to forget / the heaviness of this poor woman / who got dragged out of her sludge prison / for everyone to gawk and grope at?

I go to the IHOP / down the street where I can eat and pretend / the La Brea Woman is just a Sunday story, / not the oldest-known Angeleno, who despite her / best efforts died once and then some.

But I see her everywhere.

I see her on Sunset blvd staring at billboards, / believing the underwear models are gods, /

I see her at every bus stop I pass on jogs, / waiting to go on a return trip anywhere,

I see her in my room at night, turning / a lamp on and combing her hair — I see her everywhere / begging for her girlhood back.

And I see her / across from me in the IHOP booth right now. / She shakes her fractured head and pours white / into my coffee. It's 54° out today / and the 9,000-year-old woman / is alive in the city. end ID

Vitruvian Minion [Blueprint + Paper versions] ~ Despicable Me A despicable take on Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man from c. 1490. …because I couldn’t resist. I enjoyed making both of these versions; the blueprint one was first to go with Gru and his constant dastardly plans per the movies, but the second historical version was done as more of a direct/obvious parody of Vitruvian Man. Because where exactly did the minions even come from? Did Gru design them? Did they just pop up out of the ground? Are they from some distant land a la Willy Wonka and the Oompa-Loompas? Who knows! Fun fact: the text featured on the two pieces really is Leonardo da Vinci’s notes on Vitruvian Man - it’s just the accepted Russian translation~! ;)
