Sensory Neurons from dorsal root ganglia growing in vitro and stained for nuclei (blue), actin (red) and axons (green). After plating, these neurons start to extends axons radially. Here, two series of images showing this process are included, from 10 to 3 o'clock and from 4 to 9 o'clock.

A group of Neuromuscular Junctions (NMJs), synaptic contact between motor neurons and skeletal muscle fibers, at the sides of the intramuscular nerve which runs perpendicular to the muscle fibers. At the NMJs, the action potential triggers the release of acetilcholine, eliciting a post-synaptic potential at the muscle fiber and finally the contraction of muscle fibers. Motoneurons are stained for neurofilament in red, the myelin sheath produced by Schwann cells stained with an antibody against P0 (myelin protein zero) in green and post-synaptic sites for acetilcholine receptors in blue (colocalization of red and blue in the terminal boutons appears pink). Non myelinated axons are red and thin. Imaged using confocal microscopy.

A “tree” of neuromuscular junctions, the synaptic contact between motor neurons and skeletal muscle fibers. Here, an electric impulse known as the action potential, is codified to a chemical signal that triggers again an electric impulse in the muscle fiber, which contracts. From electric to chemical to physical! Motoneurons are stained for neurofilament, and post-synaptic sites for acetilcholine receptors. Imaged using confocal microscopy.

Immunofluorescence and electron microscope images of the Node of Ranvier in myelinated fibers of the peripheral nervous system. This structure is implicated in saltatory action potential propagation and is formed by an axonal and glial morphological specialization.

Myelinated Axons, Peripheral Nervous System, Confocal Microscopy.
These are teased nerve fibers, an association between an axon and a glial cells, in this case Schwann cells. Have been labelled with antibodies against different proteins present in Schwann cells and then revealed with a fluorescent tag of different emission wavelengths to discriminate between them.

Skeletal muscle stained in red (desmin protein), and glial cells enveloping axons in green. Acetylcholine receptors are stained in blue (colocalization with desmin appears pink). At the neuromuscular junction the nerve terminal releases acetylcholine to elicit a contractile response of the muscle fiber.
