Certain, more primitive human cultures used to write their numbers in an alternative fashion that doesn’t translate so well into Alternian. These alternative numbers were named after the primitive culture that used it, the Romans. Hence, Roman numerals. It was mostly considered an archaic, more elaborate way to write numbers by contemporaries before the colonization.
