Arun Wears Yahoo

Arun is celebrating 5 years at Yahoo and marking the occasion by wearing only Yahoo shirts for the entire month of August. Follow for daily updates as we'll be taking pictures all around campus. Arun's recent photoshoot with the Yahoo Company Store resulted in these posters that are all over the Sunnyvale headquarters.

It's our first day back since Arun's month of only wearing Yahoo shirts -- hope you didn't miss him too much!

Today Arun wears a Tech Learn t-shirt (2013) in Building E. Tech Learn provides access to training and development resources for employees. It's how Arun has learned technologies that he hasn't directly working on. Tech Learn also hosts Tech Talks, forums for Yahoos to share technical information with each other.

Where did Arun get those glasses to match the geekiness of the poster? Off of Henry's face of course.

August 31: For the grand finale of Arun’s month of wearing only Yahoo t-shirts, here’s Arun wearing his “5 Years At Yahoo” shirt (July 2013) with our fearless leader Marissa. In Arun’s words, “We have the coolest and most awesome CEO.”

In the second photo, Arun is getting a treat from his purple gumball machine, which is a souvenir given to Yahoos who have been with the company for 5 years.

So what’s next?

Even though we’ve hit our original goal of one month, we’re not quite done yet. We’re floored by the amount of love we’ve been getting — thank you Yahoo Careers, Gil Yehuda, and the Backyard team in particular. We still have some more apparel to showcase since Yahoos past and present have generously donated shirts. Have a good long weekend, and we’ll see you in September!

August 30: Arun wears a Yahoo Sports shirt (June 2013) while attempting a dunk and throwing a pass to Andrew Shaw of the mobile team. Despite Arun's freakish athletic abilities, we had him stand on a table for the basketball shot. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at the setup. Andrew was just at the gym but we dragged him to do some manual labor:

August 29: Arun wears a Yahoo Green Team shirt (2012?) while modeling our purple recycling bins you can find in every meeting room. In the second photo, you can also see Yahoo's LEED Gold Award from the US Green Building Council. Sounds fancy, but what does it mean? Yahoo's career site explains,

It means that our Sunnyvale campus ranks among the top tier of buildings which make smart use of energy, water, natural gas, and other resources. Our offices have been retrofitted to improve indoor lighting and air quality, and purchases of electronic equipment, furniture, cleaning supplies, and food were monitored to ensure compliance with LEED® standards for local purchases, re-use, and recycling.

August 28: Arun wears a Global Design Summit 5 shirt (April 2010) at the Design Studio in Building A. You can catch a reflection of Henry hurriedly snapping the photo, since all the design leads are meeting in that room and probably think he's slacking.

As previously mentioned, Yahoo's design team won a 2013 Apple Design Award for the gorgeous Weather app.

August 27: Arun wears a Hadoop shirt (March 2013) near the Sunnyvale campus outdoor recreation area, where there's beach volleyball, basketball, and and even bocce ball. 

Hadoop is an open source software framework used for data intensive applications and "underpins not only Yahoo, but Facebook Twitter, eBay, and dozens of other high-profile web outfits." Co-creator Doug Cutting was a Yahoo at the time, and he named Hadoop after his son's toy elephant. Arun's dedication to the project is apparent here: he somehow managed to find an elephant watering can.

August 26: Arun wears a University Recruiting shirt (October 2011) while shooting some pool and playing foosball in two of the game rooms on the Sunnyvale campus. He got the shirt when he participated in a recruiting trip to Columbia University in New York. After these pictures he reminded Henry how bad he is at foosball.

August 25: Arun wears a Hacker shirt (December 2011) and enjoys delicious tacos from the Mexican station in Building G on a beautiful day in Sunnyvale. The Mexican station also serves drinks imported from Mexico.

The shirt is one of many Hackday shirts he has from participating in Hackdays over the years.

August 24: Arun wears a Sherpa shirt while summiting a baby hill between buildings F and G. Sherpa is Yahoo's NoSQL cloud storage platform, used for storing data of Yahoo websites.

August 23: Arun wears a Yahoo Labs "Winter Science Week" shirt in front of the Yahoo Labs chalk drawing. Yahoo Labs is the company's research unit, which is being rebuilt with the hiring of dozens of PhDs. August 22: Arun wears a Yahoo Employee Foundation shirt (October 22) in front of a couple of art pieces in building C. The first is upstairs, and the second is next to the URLs cafeteria. The plaque below the painting explains that it was painted with bare hands in just 6 minutes by an artist at a Yahoo year end party, then purchased for charity by Yahoo co-founder David Filo.

The Yahoo Employee Foundation (YEF) is a philanthropic organization that is "employee run, employee driven, and employee funded." With donations, YEF is able to give more than a million dollars to organizations in 2013. Appropriately, Arun got this shirt for making a donation.

August 21: Donning a Paranoids shirt (2013), Arun channels the evil-fighting powers of Yahoo's security team and defends an attack from Albert of the famed Albert Kicks Stuff Tumblr. We like to imagine the Paranoids busting hackers and malicious code in a similarly awesome fashion. The security team got the Paranoids name back in 1999, according to this 2007 ZDNet article.

Though Albert fails here, visit Albert Kicks Stuff to see him triumph in other places.

August 20: Arun wears a Yahoo Mail shirt (April 2013) while visiting campus mail room, one of the perks for Yahoos. The shirt was made when the Yahoo Mail for iPad and Android tablets was launched recently.

August 19: Wearing a Yahoo Accessibility shirt, Arun visits the Accessibility Lab, where Gary Moulton demonstrates how someone with limited physical movement might use a computer. The Accessibility Lab has office hours from 10am-noon on Mondays and Fridays, during which any Yahoo can drop by for some interactive accessibility demos.
