A comparable vegetation with often evergreen deciduous and coniferous woods and partly tree ferns can be found on the south coast of South Africa, in Tasmania, Chile and along the Pacific coast from California to Canada. In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi, an agreement between the British Crown and the Maori chiefs, was signed. The document introduced British law to New Zealand and at the same time gave New Zealand's Maori authority and determination over their land and culture. The treaty is now regarded as New Zealand's founding document. The square and buildings where the treaty was signed at that time are now the popular tourist attraction "Waitangi Historic Reserve". In 1776 the naval officers of France, Spain and the United States were ordered by their respective governments to leave Captain Cook unharmed even when at war with England. Moreover, he was to be treated with the greatest possible respect, as if he were a civilian, since ultimately all countries benefited from Cook's discoveries in the form of nautical charts. When Cook set sail on November 11th, he passed Cape Horn, searched the South Atlantic and discovered for England the barren islands of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. |}{
