Two room floor plans are unlocked after you build the hospital!

When choosing a plot for a villagers home, click on it multiple times to change the season/weather!

Click on the big heart when viewing a home in the HHN to actually go to that home!

In happy home designer, how do you get a place with 2 rooms?

The restaurant is a task that Isabelle will give you. At some point you will also get the ability to choose the layout of any home you design. Just keep designing the things Isabelle tells you.

Also check the notebook on your desk, where you can spend play coins for “lessons”. It actually unlocks features each time you learn one.
