Upcoming effect pedals! On the left, a miniaturized version of the LA-2A box that I posted a few years ago. It'll actually be easier to maintain than that older effort, which had a PCB layout like a TIE Fighter. This'll have a little more gain, and keep the high voltage and original T4 module. On the right! A Pro Co Rat pedal with quite a few mods. Different diodes can be swopped and stacked (or completely left out) for different overdrive and clipping characteristics, one foot switch toggles between two distortion levels, a wet/dry mix, and a MOSFET boost at the tail end.

New home! The basement apartment had high ceilings and great sound isolation (great for someone who regularly used power tools and dates a boy who plays the piano like a drum set) but it was 30% hallway and 0.2% window. The Monroe Street Home is old and light-filled, with a chaotic garden in front and back, a studio for the fella and a room of mine own. I've spent maybe way too much time setting it up (it needed new floors, and I made some mistakes with my packing & moving techniques), but now I'm ready to go! Eeeeeeeeeeeee!

Dave's album release party will be the 17th of May at the Redstone Room in Davenport Iowa. He's also putting together a coast to coast US tour (and is always on the move)-- give him a shout and he'll swing by!

An unloaded 1x12 guitar cab, soon to be on its way to Nashville.

The baffle and back are made of plywood, the edging is a layer of mahogany veneer followed by maple. I will probably add another sequence of veneers to make a dark/light/dark/light pattern-- right now I think it is too subtle, making the dark line read as a bad glue line or shadow, or the maple edge added as compulsory band-aid. I want any bit of flair on this simple cab to look deliberate.

The color in these photos are surreal-- it was a hazy sunset in my backyard, and it was the best my camera could come up with. I do love Oregon (I say after the rain subsides).

Mandocellos require cello f-holes, right?

Mahogany sides and back, Western cedar for the soundboard... I think I'll go with a maple neck/fretboard to balance things out....

Mahogany sides! I prefer using wood that grows in my area (living in Oregon, that still gives me quite the selection)-- but I had mahogany left over from a hush-hush project.

Next mandolin will have a walnut back/sides. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy this beautiful wood. Mahogany can be such a joy to work with.

The beginnings of my cello pegs. Not sure what wood it is-- something dense and oily that a co-worker gave me. He had used it to trim the exterior of his house in Hawaii and claimed it didn't require a finish. The chunk he gave me had a cleft on one edge, like someone had tried to turn it into firewood and broke their axe instead.

A quick aside about my gloves:

I used to go through half a dozen nitrile gloves during a large glue-up (not helped by my preference of using my fingers to mix and my palms to spread the epoxy. I use stir sticks now, but I still use my hands to spread, like a child at paper-mâché). The gloves would slowly elongate and tear like sodden paper, and at the end of the procedure I'd have a pile of waste and my hands would be tacky.

Recently I started to use silicon as a release agent for moulds. Usually just GE's Outdoor Silicone Type I, which is quite pure (food-grade, too!), mixed with a little naphtha to make it go on thinly. The moulds required no additional release agent, and suffered no loss of integrity after extended use. Meanwhile, the sad piles of ineffectual and decimated blue gloves continued.

Then it finally occurred to me to put the two together. I inflated a nitrile glove inside of a cotton work glove, then impregnated the cloth with thinned silicone. I've been using the first pair I made for two months now. They're almost impossible to tear-- and when the fiberglass shell is ready to come out of the mould so too the gloves ready to be removed, like a creepy hand-cicada, from their resin-shell.

Winding an isolation transformer for a phonograph player that will soon be a guitar amp. I'm firing it up as is at first-- it's actually just a lone pentode (50L6) with a rectifier (35Z5). We'll see if it needs any further modifications; the tone control is some kind of feedback, and stabilizing elements have to go, yes? If need be that loop can be made frequency-specific...

But first! Let's hear what a 50L6 sounds like going from zero to three (watts, that is)!
