More about me:

I’m a disabled 18 year old living in Canada! I’m a wheelchair user with Tourette syndrome, level 2 Autism Spectrum Disorder, OCD, and some other stuff. I use multiple forms of alternative communication, and I identify as a part time AAC user. I feel very passionate about disability and mental health advocacy. Along with my disabled and neurodivergent identities, I’m also a transgender guy, and fairly involved in the LGBT community.

I love fungi, violin, reading and art. My favourite colour is yellow, and I have many plant children. Even though this blog is mainly about disability, don’t think that that’s all I am, it’s just what I choose to share about! Social media can never show the full picture of someone’s life.

Boundaries:

• Ableists, queerphobes, racists and terfs are not welcome

• Neither are “narc abuse” believers. Cluster b people deserve to be treated nicely.

• No asking to be my friend, I’m autistic and anxious and I find those kinds of situations stressful

• I love and will answer questions about my disability, but not ones about my private parts or sex life

• Do not send me donation requests under any circumstance. I donate to organizations only, not individual people.

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of hate in the media for ambulatory and part-time wheelchair users, so here’s your reminder that:

- Some wheelchair users can walk

- Some wheelchair users can jump

- Some wheelchair users can run, roller skate and climb stairs

Wheelchairs are simply a tool, and people use them for many reasons. It is not our place to judge whether someone “truly” needs one.

is it bad to think you don't need empathy just sympathy and compassion?

I’m not here to tell you that any thought is bad, as I think that concept is a tad harmful, but I’ll share my opinion if that helps.

It is my personal belief that being a no one ‘needs’ empathy, sympathy, compassion, or a personal moral compass, though having one or more of those can certainly make living in this society much easier.

You can choose to do good, and you can choose to cause harm, none of those are directly dependant on what kinds of social skills you have.

A person recently replied to my post asking, if I “really believe cognitively and psychiatrically disabled people should be able to medically transition.”

My response? Yes. Disability does not erase queerness, in fact they are often connected.

If a person, disabled or not, wants to transition medically, and are able to consent, and demonstrate understanding of what a medical transition is, then absolutely.

Holds you by the shoulders. You are not jealous of disabled people with higher support needs. You are jealous of disabled people with better families and higher class status. Do noooot conflate the two.

To my fellow autistics, stop trying to distance yourself from higher support needs folks.

There’s a fine line between not wanting to not intrude or speak over their experiences, and feeling the need to separate yourself, and not be associated at all with those higher on the spectrum.

Language like:

I’m autistic, but I don’t “act like a baby.

I’m not “that” autistic.

I’m autistic, not stupid!

Cross that line.

If you find yourself saying those kinds of things, I’d gently invite you to get curious about why you feel that way. 

What does “acting like a baby” look like? Do some of those associations apply to severely disabled people? Who are “those” autistics? And what does being “stupid” entail? 

Asking yourself these kinds of questions can help you get to the root of those beliefs, and open up more room for self exploration and acceptance.

At the very least it’s just something to think about.

it kinda annoys me that in june, all the queer tags were trending, but that disability pride gets kinda brushed under the rug. like i get theres way more gay people on this site than disabled people, but idk.

I feel you. Disability pride is just as important and impactful, and should be represented as such.

- Needing different aids for different days. Most disabilities are dynamic to some degree, especially the ones I have. It’s only natural for me to use different accommodations depending on my situation.

- Asking people for help. No one can do everything by themselves, and I and am not excluded from this fact. Everybody needs help. And requiring a bit more assistance does not make me a burden.

- Relying on a disability pension. Despite the stigma, it’s not and never will be a moral failure to be unable to work. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to get a job, but until then, the money I receive helps me get by.

A little while ago, a complete stranger came up to me, a visibly disabled person, and asked me for advice on whether they should euthanize their disabled dog. For context I am not a veterinarian or a pet sitter, nor do I own a dog of any kind. So um… please don’t ask people that. Top 10 most awkward interactions in my life!

"All drugs are drugs" = a surprisingly radical position that will upset people right across the political spectrum

This means:

If you draw a hard line between "drug" and "medicine" based on current legality where you live (or any other criteria) you've gone wrong somewhere,

If you think legality and/or prescription status tells you all you need about a substance's capacity to do massive harm to someone's body, mind or well-being you've gone wrong somewhere,

If you think legality and/or prescription status tells you all you need about a substance's capacity to contribute meaningfully to someone's healing, function or happiness you've gone wrong somewhere,

If you think certain substances should be excluded from informed consent (either withheld or forcibly administered) you've gone wrong somewhere.

Yes, some disabilities are dynamic, and most of us in the disability community know this. However many people aren’t aware of just how dynamic some conditions can be.

A person can go from no symptoms at all to being profoundly debilitated all in one day.

Some have baseline symptoms so low and flares so high, that things can go from 1 to 10 very quickly.

I know it can seem impossible that some people’s disabilities fluctuate with such extreme variability, but this is a real phenomenon that people deal with.

hello Kai!! my name is gwen and i’m currently in the process of getting my tourette syndrome diagnosis. you’ve been a real inspiration to me since the beginning of my journey (when i first stumbled upon your cozy little corner of the internet :D). honestly before i had any knowledge of tourettes i felt so invalidated and assumed there was something wrong with me. i’ve learned it’s not me, it’s society. i just wanted to say thank you so much for what you do. you’re an amazing human. keep being you!!
