writing tybalt as evil murder villain is so weak for the plot and romeo’s character development. if you start out with pure-of-heart good-guy romeo and tybalt slinking around dressed as the devil or whatever, there’s none of the twist. you expect tybalt’s murder and you excuse it. it’s the standard story and it doesn’t make you consider romeo’s character as much. 

but if you present tybalt as a real live human being who has been severely influenced by the circumstances he was raised in and believes strongly in honor and his family, romeo is an actual murderer. and this blurs the lines between good and evil that so many directors establish when they shouldn’t. our protagonist straight-up murders two people. he is so incredibly flawed, and we shouldn’t be able to excuse that because “he was avenging his friend and tybalt was evil anyway.” we should be able to doubt him.

when good and evil are established so that we have the standard villain and hero, the ambiguity of the feud loses a lot of its meaning. we barely get any clues about why it started (possibly money reasons because of what romeo says to the apothecary) and that’s rly cool because we don’t have a historical reason to say they’re right and they’re wrong. we have to judge them on who they are now, but if we have “good guys” and “bad guys” there’s none of the consideration.

also if tybalt is presented as a total 100% bad guy, there’s this idea of being offended that romeo gets banished. we think oh man that shouldn’t have happened, he was doing the good thing. if tybalt is a fleshed out character with good and bad qualities, we understand the political conflict that the prince is facing.
