He's a vegetarian. Rather, a sort of magic-tarian-

he considers himself too close-kindred to most surface animals to eat them.

But, since monsters can use magic to cook, a lot of animal-derived ingredients can be replicated or replaced easily enough.

... He has eaten snails.

But beef, pork, chicken, lamb- and fish, generally, are a no-go.

He can't look at a cow or a sheep and then eat it. Feels wrong.

She wasn’t always easy to startle but the king’s voice always meant important buisness to her, even if he just wanted to say ‘hello’. She turned to face him and smiled up at the large monster.

“Everything is going great, sir! No sign of a human as of yet. Also-

you can call me whatever you’d like, king Asgore” 

She was happy to have someone check on her but the king himself? She was elated! Kateraxe hadn’t come across anything suspicious and it was getting a little boring by herself, she knew this is what she signed up for of course; It was just nice to have company.

“If you insist, of course. I’m relieved to hear you say that.”

King Asgore was not always the best with names. Picking them- remembering them- it just never seemed to click. Still! The anxiety of possibly calling someone the wrong thing- and of them being too polite to correct him! How long could he possibly go about calling someone the wrong name or title? 

What if this made someone tire of him? Or worse, what if they’d been wanting his acknowledgement, and he’d gone and said the wrong thing?! 

He was overthinking this.

“It would certainly be eventful to encounter a human so soon after becoming a member of the Royal Guard. It would probably set some kind of record. Really, around this area--- I would hope your biggest problem might be someone trying to decorate Gyftrot again.” 

It seemed strange - to train the Guard for combat but hope they never truly saw any. Still, one couldn’t be too careful with their populace at stake.

roots 🌱 - describe your favorite memory

He sighs. 

It’s an innocent enough question, but the answer is painful regardless, and always will be. His fondest memories will always be the ones he had with his children. Not to say that he hasn’t had good experiences since their deaths, or that he hasn’t been even a little happy- 

- but it’s a pervasive, overarching shadow. It’s a noted absence. 

Still, 

it’s good to remember them. 

“When Asriel was first born, I worried all the time. He was so small, and I was quite worried that I might accidentally hurt him. One day, Toriel needed me to hold him for a moment, so I held him, of course- I couldn’t just say ‘no’. But I sat in front of our fireplace, feeling worried- 

- until I realized he was sound asleep. He was comfortable enough to feel at ease with me, and everything I’d been worried about seemed so silly and needless. 

All I know is when Toriel came back, we were both asleep in her chair.”  

He smiles fondly.

“He was all ears at that point, you know? I didn’t realize - a baby could have such large ears, but he grew into them just fine.”

a list of things about monsters

Monsters had not seen humans in quite a long time before the events of undertale. some monsters - like Papyrus, initially - had never seen a human at all. 

Monster lifespans are Pretty Damn Long, especially in the case of Boss Monsters like Asgore and Toriel, who Gerson says ‘will outlive’ Frisk.

Monster SOULs require traits like love and empathy to survive. It’s noted that human souls do not require these things to exist. Ouch.

Monsters that don’t actually want to FIGHT have lowered defenses. 

Most monsters don’t recall a surface life. Just what they’ve heard about it. And what has to happen for them to be able to leave.
