Pairing: Dean x Oc(Nicole)
The next day the three of us headed toward the forest. I could see Haley, her younger brother, Ben, and an older man I didn't recognize from inside Baby. Ben was carrying a shotgun and all of them were carrying full backpacks. It looked like they were talking but we could hear exactly what they were saying. Whatever they were saying it didn't look like the older man and Haley were agreeing.
Dean parked the impala in front of them. We exited the car and I handed over the duffle bag to Sammy.
"You guys got room for three more?" Dean announced.
I stood in between Sammy and Dean. "Wait, you wanna come with us?" Haley asked, confused.
"Who are these guys?" The older man asked and quite rudely I might add.
Haley turned back to look at the older man, "Apparently, this is all the park service could muster up for the search and rescue." She responded sarcastically.
Sammy headed past everyone while still carrying the duffle bag. I stared at him concerned but decided it was best if I stayed with Dean. "You're rangers?" The man said confused and unbelieving. "Her too?" He said pointing at me.
"That's right," Dean said, answering for us.
I jutted out my hips "What? Is it my dress? Or is it my heels?" I asked sarcastically. I was wearing a red plaid dress with a black belt to give it form, along with my usual black boot heels, and a small black jacket.
"And you're hiking out in biker boots, jeans, a dress, and heels?" Haley asked, rightfully confused.
Dean looked down at himself and turned to look at me. His eyes went up and down my figure. "Well, sweetheart, I don't do shorts," Dean said, walking past them and heading toward Sammy.
"Oh, and for the record I never wear pants. Don't worry I can perfectly hike in my heels so don't worry about me slowing the group down." I said, giving them a fake smile as I walked past them.
"Oh, you think this is funny? It's dangerous backcountry out there. Her brother might be hurt." The older man said to us, irked.
Three of us turned to look at him. "Believe me, I know how dangerous it can be. We just wanna help them find their brother, that's all." Dean explained to him.
Dean and I continued to walk heading past Sammy. I looked behind me and noticed that Sammy had not moved from his position "Sammy! Come on!" I called out to him
We were hiking and wandering through the forest. We found out the older man's name was Roy. Roy was leading the hike with Dean and me directly behind him. Sammy decided to stay behind with Ben.
"So, Roy, you said you did a little hunting," Dean asked, repeating Roys's statement.
"Yeah, more than a little," Roy replied.
"Uh-huh. What kind of furry critters do you hunt?" Dean questioned Roy while his eyes wandered up and down the forest.
"Mostly buck, sometimes bear," Roy answered.
Dean moved and passed Roy "Tell me, Bambi or Yogi ever hunt you back?" Dean mocked. Roy stopped moving.
Roy didn't seem like the type of person to let someone pass him. Unless he intentionally stopped. My eyes flickered toward the floor and I noticed a bear trap.
Before I could say or do anything Roy had already grabbed Dean by the collar. "Whatcha you doing, Roy?" Dean threatened.
I could feel my heart rate speed up. No ranger would have almost fallen into a bear trap. Our cover’s been blown but at least it'll be easier to move around now. I decided it would be best to not say anything and let Dean handle it.
Roy let go of Dean's collar and picked up a stick. He poked the bear trap that Dean almost stepped into. I tried to stay calm and keep a stoic face.
"You should watch where you are stepping, ranger," Roy said with a knowing smile on his face. He dropped the stick and started walking ahead of us.
I hesitantly walked up to Dean, placing a hand on his arm. I could see he had a pout on his face. I turned my face to the floor and tried not to laugh. He felt embarrassed, it was too adorable.
"It was a bear trap." He laughed, turning back to look at Sammy.
We continued hiking. I looped my right arm with Dean´s, behind us I could hear fast and heavy footsteps. It didn't seem heavy enough to be any sort of creature and it was too light to be Sammy.
I turned to my left and saw that Haley had caught up with us "You didn't pack any provisions. You guys are carrying a duffle bag. You're not rangers. So who the hell are you?" She snapped, pulling both Dean and me to look at her.
I could see Ben pass by us. Sammy followed, slightly behind him. He slowed down and stood behind Haley, he looked at us as if his eyes were asking what we wanted him to do. Dean indicates with his expression that he should just walk by.
I pointed in Ben's direction with my thumb hinting at him that he should watch over the young boy. We watched Sammy walk past us before Dean turned back to address Haley.
"Sammy, Nikki, and I are siblings, and we’re looking for our father. He might be here, we don't know. I just figured that you and us, we’re in the same boat." Dean briefly explained.
"Why didn't you just tell me that from the start?" Haley asked.
"I'm telling you now." Dean retorted.
"Ahem, what Dean means to say is that we were worried you wouldn't let us join you had you known that we weren't rangers. We are looking for our father but if you'll allow us we would also like to help you find your brother." I told her, trying to cover up and clarify our situation. She was bound to find out eventually but we couldn't tell her everything.
"That's what you meant by you understood more than I knew, isn't it?" Haley asked me.
I only nodded my head in response. There was a slight pause "Besides, it's probably the most I've ever been honest with a woman…ever. So we okay?" Dean joked. My eyes and mouth widened in shock and surprise. Oh, I wasn't about to let that joke go so easily. I pursed my lips. I was going to enjoy this, oh yes I was.
"Yeah, okay," Haley replied.
"And what do you mean I didn't pack provisions?" Dean said as he pulled out a bag of peanut M&Ms and stuck his hand in the bag as the two of us continued to hike on.
"Ahem." I cleared my throat to gain his attention.
"Mhm," Dean replied with his mouth full of M&Ms.
"Most I've ever been honest with a woman, hmm," I repeated his words.
He nervously chuckled, "I was joking you know that." He mumbled with his mouth still full of M&Ms.
"So either I'm not a woman or you haven't been completely honest with me. Which one do you wanna go with?" I teased him.
"Uhh." He said with a blank expression on his face. It became hard to keep a straight face when he looked so cute.
I burst out laughing, trying to cover my face with my hands. When I finished laughing I turned to look back at him. He looked so confused.
I sighed at his cuteness "Don't worry. I was only teasing you" I giggled, lopping my arms through his as we continued to hike.
I could hear him sigh in relief "I swear you are going to be the death of me, woman."
Roy continued to lead us, this time with me and Dean at the back. Roy came to a stop "This is it. Blackwater Ridge." Roy said.
Sammy heads past Roy "What coordinates are we at?" He asked.
Roy pulled out a GPS "Thirty-five at minus one-eleven." Roy replied.
Something didn't seem right about this place, there was something off. Dean and I walked up to Sammy. I closed my eyes and focused on my surroundings. There wasn't a single sound. Not a chirp or croak.
"You hear that?" Dean asked as I opened my eyes.
"Yeah. Not even crickets." Sammy responded as we all looked into the woods.
"I'm gonna go take a look around." I heard Roy say.
The three of us turned around "You shouldn't go off by yourself." Sammy advised.
"That's sweet. Don't worry about me." Roy mocked while he waved his gun. He pushed through us and retook the lead.
"All right, everybody stays together. Let's go." Dean said as we continued to walk.
We were all looking around near a large rock when we heard Roy.
"Haley! Over here!" Roy called.
Haley immediately ran towards Roys's voice, with us tailing right behind her. We all came to a stop.
"Oh my god," Haley muttered. We all stood in front of a couple of tents. They were torn open and bloody with all the supplies scattered.
"Looks like a grizzly." Roy voiced.
I looked at Haley. She looked distraught but who could blame her? It looked like a massacre. I stood close to Haley to ensure she wouldn't do something brash. Dean, Haley, and I looked around the tents. There was nothing left untouched. We can only hope Tommy was still alive considering how much blood was on the tent someone must've died.
"Tommy? Tommy!" Haley called out. She took off her backpack and went through the campsite. Sammy and I rushed over to catch up with her.
"Shh-sh-sh." Sammy hushed.
"Let's not do that again, okay?" I said to Haley.
"Something might still be out there." Sammy finished for me.
"Exactly. You can't exactly be too careful out here." I replied.
"Sam! Nicole!" We heard Dean shout. Sammy and I ran over to Dean, once we found him we crouched down next to him.
"The bodies were dragged from the campsite. But here, the tracks just vanish. It's weird." Dean pointed out.
We stood up. "I'll tell you what…It's no Skinwalker or Black dog." Dean said and walked off. Sammy and I lingered to look at the tracks before following suit.
As we walked back to the campsite we saw Haley crouched on the floor and holding something in her hands. I could see tears falling from her eyes. Dean and I kneeled down next to her. The poor girl. I rubbed her back in hopes to give her some sort of comfort. I would try and ease her pains in more supernatural ways but that would leave me too drained to fight.
There was a bloody cell phone in her hands. The back of the phone was open. "Hey, he could still be alive." Dean tried to comfort her.
I squeezed her shoulders "Have faith. We will get him back." I reassured her.
"Help!" We heard a man's voice cry out. Dean and I instantly stood up and looked in the direction of the voice.
We all rushed over to the voice. Dean took out his gun in case. Roy led the way as we all ran to aid the man who was shouting.
"Help me!" The man cried.
When we got there we couldn't find anyone. "It seemed like it was coming from around here, didn't it?" Haley voiced out.
There was something off about this forest. I stood there and listened. There it was again. There wasn't a single sound. Not a rustle of the leaves or crickets. Complete and total silence.
"Everybody back to camp," Sammy ordered.
We all ran back to the campsite but when we got there all of the supplies were missing "Our packs." Haley pointed out.
"This isn't some normal creature. It's smart. It has some form of understanding. It knew that the packs were important or at least useful and stole them while we went off." I thought. I started to think and eliminate what the creature could be. Only so many of them had some form of intelligence or comprehension. "It couldn't be. Could it?" I pondered.
"So much for my GPS and my satellite phone," Roy said as he knelt down to look at the campsite.
"What the hell is going on?" Haley asked.
"It's smart. It wants to cut us off so we can’t call for help." Sammy analyzed.
"You mean someone, some nut job out there just stole all our gear." Roy corrected Sam.
"I don't think that’s the case. Think about it. Do you really think it's such a coincidence that the moment we leave the packs unattended they somehow go missing?" I asked.
I saw Sammy walk up and whisper something to Dean. Soon enough Dean motions for me to follow them. I walked a little faster to catch up to them. We headed a little ways away from the group to have a little privacy.
Once we were far enough and knew that they weren't able to hear us, "Okay. Let me see Dad’s journal." Sammy asked as Dean handed it over. Sammy opened and flipped through the journal until he stopped at a particular page.
"So what is it?" I questioned.
"All right, check that out." Sammy showed us a first nations-style drawing of a Wendigo.
"Oh, come on. Wendigos are in the Minnesota woods or, or northern Michigan. I've never heard of one this far west." Dean said, trying to reason with Sam.
"I don't know Dean. I think I'm with Sammy on this one. I've thought it over and there isn't any other creature that it could be." I explained.
"Think about it, Dean, the claws, the way it can mimic a human voice," Sammy said.
"Great. Well, then this is useless." Dean said as he pulled out his pistol.
Sammy gave Dean back Dad's journal. He headed past us, then stopped for a moment as he turned to face us, "We gotta get these people to safety." Sammy said as he walked off back to the campsite.
"Come on let's head back," I said while patting Dean's shoulder and walking back to the group.
As I got there I heard Sammy say "All right, listen up, it's time to go. Things have gotten…more complicated."
"What?" Haley voiced out.
"Kid, don't worry. Whatever's out there I think I can handle it." Roy said, cockily.
"It's not me I'm worried about. If you shoot this thing, you're just gonna make it mad. We have to leave. Now." Sam ordered.
"One, you're talking nonsense. Two you're in no position to give anybody orders."Roy argued.
"Relax," Dean said in a threatening way.
"We never should have let you come out here in the first place. All right? I'm trying to protect you." Sam explained.
I looked back and forth between Sammy, Roy, and, the two siblings. I could tell that both Sammy and Roy were becoming more and more agitated. From the looks of it, the siblings weren't planning on leaving either.
"You protect me? I was hunting these woods when your mommy was still kissing you goodnight." Roy retorted as he invaded Sam's personal space.
My eyes widened and immediately darted toward Sam. It was easy to see that Roy had struck a nerve. I wasn't ready t get caught in the crossfire just yet so I waited.
"Yeah? It's a damn near-perfect hunter. It's smarter than you, and it's gonna hunt you down and eat you alive unless we get your stupid sorry ass out of here." Sam retaliated as calmly as he could.
"You know your crazy right?" Roy laughed.
"Yeah? You ever hunt a Wen-" Sammy was cut off by Dean pushing him.
I rushed toward them and whispered to Sammy, "Calm down, okay? We don't need them knowing what's out there."
"Chill out," Dean told Sam.
"Stop. Stop it. Everybody just stops. Look, Tommy might still be alive and I'm not leaving here without him." Haley interrupted getting in between everybody. There was a sense of finality in her voice and I could tell there was no convincing her to leave at least not without her brother. If he's still alive that is.
I looked to Dean and Sam for confirmation and by the look of things, they came to the same conclusion as me.
After a pregnant pause, Dean spoke, "It's getting late. This thing is a good hunter in the day, but an unbelievable hunter at night. Well never beat it, not in the dark. We need to settle and protect ourselves."
I gathered some sticks and placed them in the campfire. From the corner of my eye, I could see Dean drawing the symbols in the dirt.
"One more time, that's-" Haley's question was cut short.
"Anasazi symbols. It's for protection. The Wendigo cant cross over them." Dean explained for the nth time.
Roy laughed mockingly with his gun over his shoulder. Dean and I turn to face him "Nobody likes a skeptic, Roy." Dean said.
"Better safe than sorry as they say." I voiced out.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Sammy who looked a bit dazed. Dean seemed to notice as well. The two of us headed over to sit down next to Sammy. Dean sat on his left while I sat on his right.
"You wanna tell us what's going on in that freaky head of yours?" Dean asked.
"Dean-" Sammy was cut off.
"No, you're not fine. You're like a powder keg, man, it's not like you. I'm supposed to be the belligerent one, remember?" Dean said trying to comfort Sam.
After a long pause "Dad´s not here, I mean, that much we know for sure, right? He would have left us a message, a sign, right?" Sam murmured.
I could tell he was frustrated that much was evident. I laid my head against his shoulder while rubbing his back trying to bring him some comfort and calm him down. I already had my hands full with Dean I didn't need another reckless brother on my hands.
"Yeah, you're probably right. To tell you the truth, I don't think Dad’s ever been to Lost Creek." Dean admitted.
"Then let's get these people back to town and let's hit the road. Go find Dad. I mean why are we still here." Sam was irked as he hit the ground with a stick.
At those words, Dean moved to sit in front of Sam and me, "This is why." Dean said, showing us Dad's journal.
"This book. This is Dad's single most valuable possession. Everything he knows about every evil thing is in here and he's passed it on to us. I think he wants us to pick up where he's left off. You know, saving people. Hunting things. The family business." Dean explained.
Sammy shook his head, "That makes no sense. Why doesn't he just—call us? Why doesn't he—tell us what he wants, tell us where he is?" He questioned.
"Sammy, believe me when I say I—we don't have all the answers. We are just as lost and confused as you are but there is always a reason. Dad must have his reasons whether we will ever know those reasons is up to Dad." I said trying to comfort him. He must understand that we are here for him and that he isn't the only one seeking answers. We are all in the same boat. We are in this together.
"As Nikki said I dunno but the way I see it, Dad´s giving us a job to do, and I intend to do it." Dean
"Dean, Nikki, no. I gotta find Dad. I gotta find Jessica’s killer. It's the only thing I can think about." Sam said desperately. It wasn't easy seeing him like this. It hurt me so much. I felt my eyes sting with tears and my chest burn.
I wrapped my arms around him and nuzzled my head in his neck. The burning sensation rose into my throat as the tears fell from my face. "Okay, all right, Sam, we'll find them, I promise. Listen to me. You've gotta prepare yourself. I mean this search could take a while, and all that anger, you can't keep it burning over the long haul. It's gonna kill you. You gotta have patience man." Dean explained trying to reason with Sam.
Sam looked down at the ground with tears brimming in his eyes. He looked at Dean and I "How do you guys do it? How does Dad do it" He asked.
I laid my head back on his shoulder. I could see Dean look back at the camp. "Well for one, them," Dean said looking toward Haley and Ben.
Sammy and I followed suit. "I mean, I figure our family's so screwed to hell, maybe we can help some others. Make things a little more bearable." Dean said.
There was a pause of silence as Sammy looked at Haley and Ben. "I'll tell you what else helps." Dean started as Sammy looked back at him.
"Killing as many evil sons of bitches as I possibly can," Dean said which brought a small smile to Sammy's face.
"You know what helps me," I whispered making both of their heads turn to me. "Thinking of you guys. As messed up as our family is I wouldn't trade it for the world. There isn't anywhere else in the world Id rather be than be with you guys." I said softly while bringing the two closer to me. I felt Dean peck my temple and Sammy squeeze my shoulders for a side hug.
"Help me! Please!" We heard someone scream. The three of us immediately stood up and went to patrol the area. Dean and I had guns at the ready while Sammy was shining a flashlight.
"Help!" The voice continued to scream.
"He's trying to draw us out. Just stay cool, stay put." Dean advised.
"Inside the magic circle." Roy mocked.
"Help! Help me ple-" The voice was cut off by an animalistic growl.
"Okay, that's no grizzly," Roy said while pointing his gun toward the sound. Dean and I slowly moved closer in the direction of the sound.
From my peripheral vision, I could see Haley pull her brother closer to her. As she pulled herself and her brother toward the ground I could hear her comforting words "It's okay. You'll be alright. I promise." I wasn't sure if she was trying to reassure herself or her brother more.
We heard something growl and rush past us making Haley shriek in the process. Roy, Dean, and I all had our guns pointed in the general direction of the sound.
Before we could do anything Roy started haphazardly shooting in the general direction of the sounds. "I hit it." He exclaimed and started running into the forest to see what he had hit.
"Roy, no, Roy," Dean screamed calling out to the man.
"Stop!" I tried to warn him.
Dean and I turned to Haley and Ben. "Don't move" Dean ordered before running after Roy with Sam.
I decided to stay with Haley and Ben in case the monster decided to come back. I wasn't about to leave them here helpless like sitting ducks. I made sure to keep them close to me.
"Okay, let's move back inside the circle okay," I said calmly while ushering them back to the campsite.
Once we were back inside the circle I seated them both back on the log and took the burning stick from Haley's hand and tossed it back into the campfire.
I sat down next to Haley with my legs crossed and my gun in hand just in case. I could see they were both a little dazed.
After the shock had reeled in and reality started to set in, Haley started to tremble. Ben shifted closer to her and tried to comfort her but nothing seemed to work. "I-that-what-" She stuttered.
"We don't need to talk about it now. It's a lot to take in for both of you. I can tell. It isn't easy, believe me. How about you two try to get some sleep okay? I'll keep watch so you don't need to worry. We're safe here." I said in the softest way possible. They were both terrified and scared. I could feel it in the air.
I had to stay calm. Although I won't be able to touch them, that doesn't mean I still can't influence how they feel. Touching them does make the effect stronger but I can still manipulate the atmosphere around us.
If I stayed calm sooner or later they should feel comfortable enough to get some rest. It took a while but once they felt comfortable enough they leaned next to each other to try and get some rest.
I could feel my eyes drooping. They felt heavy and wanted rest but I had to wait for Sam and Dean first. This wasn't my first rodeo. It felt uncomfortable to be left alone with only the silence and my thoughts to keep me company.
I heard rustling from the leaves along with footsteps. I turned to see Sam and Dean "So? What happened?" I whispered to not wake the two siblings.
I slowly stood up and walked closer to check on them. I pulled Sammy's head to my level and turned his head as I checked for any wounds or scratches.
"Not sure. It was fast and too dark to see anything. Whatever happened all we know is that Roy´s gone." Sammy explained. Once I was sure that he wasn't injured I pulled away and went to check on Dean.
"So what now?" I asked as I inspected Dean's face.
"Would you stop that?" Dean said while pushing my hands off his face to stop me from smothering him.
"Well sue me I can't be worried about my boyfriend anymore?" I sassed and jutted out my hip with my arms crossed over my chest. In the background, I could hear Sammy snicker at our bickering.
I turned around to look at Sammy, "And what's so funny Mr?" I asked with a small smile on my face.
Sammy cleared his throat trying to compose himself "Nothing, nothing, just uh-anyway best course of action is to wait for daylight yeah hm." He said awkwardly.
"Sammy's right we should get some rest then first thing in the morning we go kill that evil son of a bitch." Dean said.
"What are we going to do about those two?" I asked as I turned to point toward the sleeping siblings.
"I'm not sure but chances are they aren´t leaving anytime soon," Sammy said moving to sit down on a log.
"And the wendigo?" I asked as I took a seat next to Sam.
"Well our equipment is practically useless but I'm sure we can figure something out," Dean said plopping down to my left.
I laid my head on Dean's shoulder as my eyes started to droop. I felt Dean pull me closer as he placed his head on top of mine and his hand on my waist. I tugged Sammy's hand and pointed toward my shoulder. Before I knew it I felt a weight on my shoulder.
"Goodnight I love you, boys," I whispered before I let my heavy eyelids drop. I pray that tomorrow will be easier. That was the last thought I had before I let sleep take over my body.
When I woke up the boys were already gone and I was lying down on the ground with Dean's jacket over my shoulders. I sat up looking up at the sky. It was still a little dark so I could only assume it was around five to six in the morning. I slowly stood up to look for Sam and Dean.
As I dusted myself I turned to see that the two siblings were still asleep. At least they had a good night's sleep. Once I finished cleaning myself I strolled around the camp in search of the two boys.
I walked around with Dean's jacket over my shoulders. I strolled around aimlessly until I saw a small mop of brown hair sticking up from a stump. I quietly tiptoed my way to Sammy. Once I was close enough I jerked his shoulders to scare him.
He turned around and glared at me, "Not funny." He muttered.
"Aw, I'm sorry I couldn't help myself but you should be more aware of your surroundings," I said as I slowly slid down to sit next to him.
I saw that he had dad's journal in his hands as he stared off into space. I bumped against his shoulder to gain his attention, "Hey, what's wrong?" I asked.
"Nothing, just thinking." He replied.
"Sammy I know you better than that what's really bothering you," I asked him again.
"I just can't help but think about Jess and dad and-" He sighed, cutting himself off.
I leaned against him "Hey, it's okay. You're under a lot of stress. I'm not gonna force you to talk if you don't want to but Dean and I are here if you need us okay? You're not alone. We're facing this together as a family." I tried consoling him.
"I'm gonna go look for Dean wanna come with?" I offered as I stood up, dusted my clothes, and pointed in the direction of the campsite.
"No thanks. I'm gonna stay here for a little longer." He answered.
"Okay." I rubbed his shoulder as I turned to leave.
I walked back toward the camp and saw Dean surveying the area. I pulled his jacket closer to me as I neared him.
I leaned against a tree while I watched him walk around the bloodied campsite without his jacket. It was an odd sight, to say the least. It was rare for me for anyone really to see him without his jacket outside.
"You know I don't like waking up alone," I whispered from behind him.
"Well, you looked like you needed the extra sleep, and did I mention you look so much better with that jacket on." He said, as turned to look at me and proceeded to walk closer to me.
He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me closer as I instinctively snaked my arms around his neck. "That's beside the point. It doesn't matter if I needed more sleep, what matters is that we get those people to safety and I think you look much better with your jacket on." I replied as I took the jacket off my shoulders and helped him put on his jacket.
"Whatever you say, sweetheart." He retorted as he continued to survey the campsite.
After an hour had passed both of the siblings were awake and they were seated in the campsite among the tents as Dean and I inspected every corner.
"I don't...I mean, these types of things, they aren't supposed to be real." Haley stammered.
"I wish I could tell you different," Dean said nonchalantly as he walked toward her to face her. While I continued to look for useful materials around the camp.
Unfortunately, Dean and I could only find an empty beer bottle. Without any lighter fluid, everything else was useless. For now, we could only scrummage around until we find some sort of flammable liquid.
"How do we know it's not out there watching us?" I heard Haley ask.
"We don't but we're safe for now," Dean replied.
"How do you know about this stuff?" She questioned.
I stopped my search for a moment. I turned to look at both Dean and Haley. I saw Dean pause and consider his options before answering "Kind of runs in the family." Dean said before walking away.
As my eyes flickered between Dean and Haley I almost tripped and fell on my face. I was walking without paying attention. Thankfully I caught myself with a tree. I looked down to see what nearly tripped me. I saw that it was a can. I curiously picked it up to inspect it. It was a canister of lighter fluid.
"What are the chances of that!?" I thought incredulously as my eyes widened.
"Hey." I heard Sammy say from behind me. I turned around to walk toward the group with the container in my hand.
"So we've got half a chance in the daylight. And I, for one...wanna kill this evil son of a bitch." Sammy breathed out bitterly.
"Well, hell, you know I'm in," Dean replied.
"And you sure as hell ain't leaving me out here." I sassed with a cheeky smile on my face and my hands on my hips.
Sammy pulled out Dad's journal. While he flipped through the journal I walked over to Dean to show him my find.
I tapped him on the shoulder to gain his attention. "Look what I found," I said as I gently shook the lighter fluid.
He took it in his hand "Good job how'd you find it?" He whispered as he caressed my head.
"Let's not talk about that," I murmured turning my head to hide my embarrassment. Thankfully he didn't question me further.
"Wendigo is a Cree Indian word. It means evil that devours." Sammy read off the journal as he showed Haley and Ben.
"They're hundreds of years old. Each one was once a man. Sometimes an Indian, or other times a frontiersman or a miner or hunter." Dean explained as he walked past the two siblings with the canister in hand.
"How's a man turn into one of those things?" Haley asked.
"Well, it's always the same. During some harsh winter, a guy finds himself starving, cut off from supplies or help. Becomes a cannibal to survive, eating other members of his tribe or camp." Dean answered as he picked up a couple of things off the ground.
"Like the Donner Party," Ben commented.
"Poor creatures really. Truly is a shame that we can't do more for them." I sighed as I placed my hands on my face.
"Cultures all over the world believe that eating human flesh gives a person certain abilities. Speed, strength, immortality." Sammy elaborated.
"If you eat enough of it, over years, you become this less-than-human thing. You're always hungry." Dean explained.
"So if that's true, how can Tommy still be alive?" Haley asked.
I cringed away not wanting to tell her the answer. "You're not gonna like it," Dean warned her as he glanced at Sam and me before turning back to look at Haley.
"Tell me." Haley insisted.
"More than anything, a wendigo knows how to last long winters without food. It hibernates for years at a time, but when it's awake it keeps its victims alive. It, uh, it stores them, so it can feed whenever it wants. If your brother´s alive, it's keeping him somewhere dark, hidden, and safe. We gotta track it back here." Dean answered.
"And then how do we stop it?" She questioned.
"Well, guns are useless, so are knives. Basically, we gotta torch the sucker." Dean said as he held up the can of lighter fluid, a beer bottle, and the white cloth.
Dean, Sam, and I were planning our next course of action while Haley and Ben were seated behind us on a log, waiting
"Why are we sitting around and doing nothing while Tommy could still be out there!" I heard Haley exclaim from behind us.
Before Dean or Sam could move a muscle I placed my hands on either of their shoulders "I'll handle this. I'm sure you two can take care of the rest without me." I whispered as I walked past them and moved toward Haley.
"Haley, I understand how you feel but we can't just start walking around without a plan." I calmly explained.
"But-" I cut her off before she could start.
"We want you and your brother as safe as possible. We need to be cautious because frankly, we are stuck here without any necessary supplies. What we need right now is not to panic but to think logically." I told her with a stoic expression on my face with hopes that if I stayed calm she would follow suit.
I placed a hand on her shoulder to try and comfort her "I know you're worried about Tommy but right now you need to be strong for your brother that's right here. He needs you just as much as Tommy. I know it's a lot to ask, believe me, I do." I said as I motioned for her to take a seat next to Ben.
I took a deep breath and started rubbing her shoulder, as I concentrated on taking away her stress. "We'll be moving soon, okay? We just needed a little time to prepare." I said as I saw her take a deep breath.
I lifted my hand off her shoulder as she moved closer to Ben. "What is he doing?" Haley asked as she looked at Dean.
I was caught off guard by her question. "A-uh molotov cocktail." I stuttered.
"A what?" Haley questioned.
"A molotov cocktail. It's a hand-thrown incendiary weapon. In simpler terms, it's a weapon designed to cause a fire. It's usually made of a frangible container filled with a flammable liquid and a fuse. Because of their relative ease of production, they are commonly used by criminals and rioters." I explained.
I wasn't sure if she fully understood what I said or if she was even listening at all but I knew that more often than not when civilians get involved in our world they go into a state of shock and dysphoria. Especially since all of this happened over a short period of time because of that some people like to focus on tiny details to distract themselves from the current situation. This doesn't only happen when people get involved with the supernatural this happens in all sorts of stressful situations. I could only hope that this was some form of distraction for her to ease her mind.
I stood up and dusted off my dress. I walked over to Dean and Sam when I noticed Dean had finished. "Are we ready to go?" I queried.
Dean was leading the way as we walked through the forest with the molotov cocktail in his hand. We followed a trail of claw marks and blood on the trees.
I walked behind Haley and Ben as I looked at the trees. I couldn't help but get an uneasy feeling as I trailed behind.
"Dean, Nicole" I heard Sammy call from in front of the group.
Dean and I caught up with Sammy to see what he was looking at "What is it?" Dean asked as we stopped behind Sammy.
I caught Sammy's gaze and looked up to see a plethora of bloody claw marks and broken branches everywhere surrounding us. As I stared at the trees I couldn't help but break into a cold sweat.
"Guys I have a bad feeling about this," I muttered as I shuffled toward Dean to calm myself down.
"You know, I was thinking, those claw prints, so clear and distinct. They were almost too easy to follow." Sammy scoffed.
As soon as Sammy finished his sentence I could hear growling all around us in different directions. This wendigo was smarter than we gave it credit for. It led us with a trail of claw marks and blood into a trap where it could surround us. In every direction, my head turned there was another growl and a rustle in the bushes.
I immediately moved in front of Haley as I saw that she was further away from us. As I stood in front of Haley I felt something drip onto my shoulder. I whipped my head to look at the red splotches on my shoulder. I slowly tilted my head upward to see a body dangling from the tree.
I could hear Haley scream from behind me as the body started falling toward us. I took her arm and pulled us out of the way of the plunging body. We tripped and fell as the body landed in front of us. I landed on my bottom with Haley on my lap.
I glanced at the body and my eyes widened when I saw Roys's face. Even though I didn't like him, no one deserved to die like this. Dean dashed to examine his body while Sammy rushed toward Haley and me.
"You two okay? You got it?" Sammy asked as he helped Haley and me get up.
"Damn it, His neck´s broke." As Dean said that more growling came from the bushes.
"All right, come on," Sammy said trying to comfort Haley as he helped her.
"Okay, run, run, run! Go, go, go!" Dean ordered while he placed his hand on my back to guide me as we ran.
We ran as fast as we could through the forest and soon enough we were all running on our own instead of as a group. I ran faster and faster and I could feel my legs start to burn, blood rushing to my ears and pure survival instinct kicked in.
I could no longer see Dean, Sam, Haley, or Ben, I came to a halting stop once I realized I was alone. My chest was heaving as I breathed. I was basically screwed. I was alone with no weapon. I took a deep breath to calm myself down. Panicking would only make things worse.
Even though I was alone I couldn't hear or feel anything ominous around me which was a good sign. I weighed my options.
"On one hand screaming for help would only put me at more risk. Sam and Dean might hear me if I called for help but I would also risk calling the Wendigo. But I can't just wait here like a sitting duck either." I thought as I pulled my hair in frustration.
"My best course of action right now is to start retracing my steps in hopes that I didn't get too far away from the others." I thought to myself as I started to walk back in the opposite direction.
As I continued to walk I couldn't help but think about what happened to the others. I could only hope they were alright. As I walked I heard a familiar voice laugh from a distance and say "...than breadcrumbs"
"Sammy! Sammy!" I called out as I sprinted in the direction of the voice.
"Nikki!" I heard him call out and soon enough I saw a walking sasquatch with a mop of brown hair.
"Sammy! Oh, thank god your okay!" I exclaimed as I ran up to squeeze the life out of him. I felt him wrap his arms around me and place his head over my own.
"We thought you were taken by the wendigo too," Sammy whispered as he held me tighter.
It took me a second to comprehend his sentence. "Wait, what do you mean ´too´?" I asked as I moved out of his arms to look at his face.
"I tripped as we ran away and Sam came back to help me. Haley and Dean were up ahead and before we could reach them we heard Haley scream. By the time that we got there, all there was left was that." I looked at Ben from behind Sammy as he explained and pointed toward the molotov cocktail in Sammy's hand.
"I'm sorry." Ben apologized with his eyes downcasted.
I slowly walked over to him and wrapped my arms around him. "No, no, you did nothing wrong. I'm just glad you two are safe. We´ll find your brother and your sister okay." I told him as I hugged him.
"So do you guys have any idea of where they could've gone?" I asked as I turned to look at Sam.
"They went in that direction," Sammy said, pointing at a trail of M&Ms.
I laughed as I walked toward the trail of colorfully candy-coated chocolate. "What are we waiting for? Hansel and Gretel are waiting for us." I chuckled as I followed the trail of M&Ms.
We continued to follow the trail and we ended up in front of a mine entrance. The mine seemed to be abandoned with trees, mold, and moss overrunning the entrance. As we walked closer I noticed the entrance was slightly barricaded and closed off with a bright red sign on it.
It read, "WARNING! DANGER! DO NOT ENTER EXTREMELY TOXIC MATERIAL."
Sam who was in front walked closer to inspect the opening with Ben and me right behind him. "Well, that doesn't bode well," I muttered under my breath as I looked at the sign.
Sam turns to look at Ben and me. He shrugs and goes inside. Ben followed suit while I entered slowly as I read a larger sign above the opening which read "KEEP OUT NO ADMITTANCE."
As we walked further into the mine, the darker it got. Sam led us with a flashlight in hand. With Ben in front of me, I could barely see anything but I could feel a rail underneath my feet as we walked through the dark and damp tunnel.
As we trudged along, a growl caught our attention. I could feel shivers go down my spine as I heard the growl. I immediately stopped walking as Sam turned off the flashlight. Before I knew it the three of us had our backs pressed up against the wall. I took a deep breath to calm myself as the wendigo walked closer toward us. Sam and I covered Ben's mouth before he could scream.
Thankfully the wendigo turned and walked in another direction. As we breathed out a sigh of relief, I turned to look at Ben.
"You don't need to be afraid as long as we´re here," I whispered and I placed my hand on his shoulder as we kept walking.
Sam, Ben, and I kept on going through the mine. With Ben and Sam ahead of me, I suddenly heard some creaking.
I turned to look down at the source of the sound. Although I could barely see, I saw that the surface that Sam and Ben were standing on wasn't ground at all but old wooden planks.
Before I knew it Sam and Ben had fallen through the floorboards. I immediately crouched down and looked through the massive hole in the floor. It was pitched black and I couldn't see a thing.
I held my breath as I waited for a sign that they were okay. Before long I could hear vaguely hear Sammy.
"Hey, it's okay, it's okay, it's okay." I sighed in relief as I heard Sammy supposedly trying to calm Ben down.
I could hear shuffling and footsteps as I heard an echo of someone calling Dean from below the pit.
"Sammy! Ben! Are you two okay?! Are they down there!?" I yelled in hopes that they could hear me.
"We're fine! Are you okay?!" I heard Sammy reply.
"I'm fine but are Dean and Haley down there?!" I asked.
"They're here! Can you get down by yourself?" Sammy questioned.
"I'm not sure!" I answered.
"It's okay I'll catch you," Sammy responded.
"Okay! I'm going to jump in three, two, one!" I shouted as I jumped into the hole.
Before I knew it Sammy had caught me in his arms before I could hit the ground. As Sammy placed my feet on the ground I gasped as I saw Dean and Haley hanging by their wrists from the ceiling.
I instantly rushed over to Dean with Sammy not far behind me. I cupped his face with my hands and inspected his face.
"Dean, Dean, Dee. Come on wake up!" I hastily said as I continuously lightly slapped his face.
Sammy lightly pushed me aside as he grabbed Dean by the shoulders and shook him as he exclaimed, "Dean!"
Deans's eyes shot open and I immediately flung myself onto him.
"Thank heavens you are alright!" I exclaimed as I peppered his face with kisses.
"Hey, you okay?" Sammy asked Dean.
"Yeah." Dean winced in pain.
"But maybe I should get kidnapped more often if-" I cut him off as I lightly smacked his face.
"That was for getting kidnapped in the first place and this-" I whispered as I kissed him, "Was for staying alive."
"Haley, Haley, wake up, wake up!" I heard Ben trying to wake up Haley. Hearing Ben brought me back to my senses.
"Sammy help me get them down," I said as I crouched down to get two small daggers from my ankle boots.
I passed one to Sam as I helped Ben get Haley down from the ceiling.
"Gotcha," Sammy said, cutting Dean down, as Dean groaned in pain.
"Atta girl." I struggled to breathe out from the sudden weight of catching Haley.
As Sammy carried Dean I could hear him whisper, "We thought it killed you."
The three of us helped them over to an empty patch on the floor and gently sat them down. Once I had gotten Haley onto the floor I left Ben to tend to her as I rushed over to Sam and Dean.
"You sure you're alright?" Sammy questioned Dean as he continued to groan in pain.
"Yeah. Yep. Where is he?" Dean grimaced as he asked. I kneeled down beside him and caressed his cheek. It was obvious he was still in pain but I decide to not mention it.
"Aw, my poor baby." I sighed in a soft voice as I pouted.
"It's gone for now," Sammy replied.
I could see from the corner of my eye, while I was helping Dean get his wrists untied, that Haley had divested herself of the rope. She stood up with the help of Ben. I turned my head to see where they were walking to and behind me I saw another man still hanging from the ceiling.
As she stood there with Ben I could hear her quietly sob, "Tommy…"
I slowly got up to comfort her as she placed a hand on Tommy's cheek. Before I could reach her Toms's head jerked up. Scaring both Haley and me. Haley jumped back and shrieked. I placed a hand on my heart as I tried to calm myself down.
She turned to Sam and me as she screamed, "Cut him down!"
I gestured for Sammy to follow me as I walked toward Tommy to cut him down with my dagger. Sammy caught him as I cut him down.
We slowly laid him down as he breathed out, "Man."
"We're going to get you home." I heard Haley tell Tommy.
I turned to see Dean struggling to get up from the floor. I hurried over to support him as he stood up. In a corner, there was a pile of supplies. Dean leaned over to pick up a flare gun.
"Check it out." Dean turned around to show Sammy our findings.
"Flare guns. Those’ll work." Sammy grinned as Dean smiled and twirled the guns in his hand.
We headed down a tunnel, Dean and I were in the lead with a flare gun in each of our hands while Sammy assisted Haley in carrying Tommy. Out of the blue, we heard growling from further in the mineshaft.
"Oh hell nah," I murmured under my breath.
"Looks like someone's home for supper," Dean said.
"We’ll never outrun it." Haley voiced out as Dean and I turned back to look at her.
Dean glanced at Sammy and me, "You guys thinking what I’m thinking."
"Unfortunately," I muttered.
"Yeah I think so," Sammy replied.
"All right, listen to me. Stay with Sam and Nicole. They're gonna get you out of here." Dean ordered.
"What are you going to do?" Haley asked.
"Something stupid." I retorted, "And you better not die on me, or else I will kill you." I threatened as I grabbed his arm.
"I got this." Dean winked as he gave me a quick peck on the lips.
I watched him start to walk away and yell, "Chow time, you freaky bastard! Yeah, that's right, bring it on, baby, I taste good!"
Soon enough the rest of Deans's words become indistinguishable. Sammy and I waited for a couple of seconds until we were sure Dean was a safe distance away from us.
Sammy walks in a different direction and calls out, "All right, come on! Hurry!" Sammy leads the way with the Collinses and me not far behind him.
The five of us hurried down a tunnel before we started hearing growling again. Sammy pointed the gun in the direction of the growling. He lowered the gun and turned back to look at us.
"Nikki, get them outta here." He ordered.
I looked him straight in the eyes and I could immediately tell he wasn't going to budge.
"Sam-" I cut Haley off before she could continue.
"Got it. Come on, let's get you guys out of here." I ordered as I tried to usher them.
"Go! Go! Go!" Sam yelled.
"Come on, Haley!" Ben called Haley as they helped Tom walk along the mine tunnel. I lingered back and turned to look at Sam.
I placed a hand on his shoulder and looked him in the eyes, "Stay safe." I whispered before rushing to catch up with the three siblings.
As we scrambled through the tunnel I couldn't help but look back. A part of me wanted to run back to help him but I knew that would only put all of us in danger. I tried to help Haley and Ben carry Tom as much as possible. I couldn't help but feel frustrated at this rate were all going to get eaten.
It wasn't long until I heard loud thumping footsteps from behind us. Haley and I leaned over to see Sam running toward us.
"Sam!" Haley and I exclaimed simultaneously.
"Come on, hurry. Hurry! Hurry! Let's go." Sam yelled as he caught up with us and ushered us.
The four of us ran as fast as we could with the wendigo right behind us. We ran until we hit a dead end.
"No! Damn. Get behind me." Sam ordered. The Collinses hid behind him but I refused to hide. I stood beside him and covered the Collinses as much as I could.
I could see Sammy clench his jaw as the wendigo slowly approached us, taking its time. I could feel my heart in my throat as it go closer. Out of the blue, I saw Dean come up from behind the wendigo.
"Hey!" Dean called out and the wendigo turned around but before it could do anything Dean shot it in the stomach.
The flare goes off and the wendigo gets engulfed by the flames. Before long it would only be a pile of ashes.
"Not bad, huh?" Dean retorted.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Sammy grin. When the fire died down I immediately jumped into his arms.
I sighed as I inhaled his scent, "Always in the nick of time, eh?" I beamed at him. I felt him wrap his arms around me as I snuggled deeper into his chest.
We were finally out of the mine and at the ranger's station. Sammy and Ben dealt with the police officers while I decided to stay with Dean and Haley as the paramedics patched them up. I was standing in between Dean and Haley as we walked toward Baby while they loaded Tom into the ambulance.
Once we reached Baby, I sighed and laid my head on Deans's shoulder, "I'm so tired." I mumbled with my eyes closed. I could feel him wrap an arm around my shoulder and place a kiss on my forehead.
I heard Haley cough. I opened my eyes to look at her, "So..." She trailed off as she gestured towards Dean and me with her eyes.
I lifted my head off his shoulder and straighten my back, "I'm adopted." I answered.
"It's, uh, complicated. But my parents past away a long time ago and their dad took me in." I explained.
"You two are-" I cut her off.
After a long pause, "So really, I don't know how to thank both of you." She said.
I turned to see Dean smirking at Haley while she and I just laughed.
"Must you cheapen the moment? Nicole is literally beside you." She smiled
"Sorry about him, he's just a natural flirt. You learn to get used to it. What he's trying to say is that your safety is thanks enough." I said after I composed myself.
A paramedic came up to Haley, "You riding with your brother?" She asked
The paramedic headed back to the ambulance as Ben and Sammy walked up to us.
"Let's go." Haley turned to tell Ben.
Haley hugged me, "Thank you, for everything, I hope you find your father." She said as she pulled back.
She walked and wrapped an arm around Ben as they headed for the ambulance.
"Thanks, Sam." She said as they passed by him.
Sammy sat next to me on the hood of the impala as we watched Haley and Ben climb in the ambulance with Tom, who was shirtless and bandaged.
"Close her up." We heard a paramedic say as another paramedic went to close the doors.
"Man, I hate camping," Dean said.
"Me three." I sighed as I laid my head on Deans's shoulder again. We could hear the sirens of the ambulance wailing as it drove away.
"Sam, you know we're gonna find Dad, right?" Dean reassured Sammy.
"Yeah, I know. But in the meantime...I'm driving." Sam whispered.
I snickered as I watched Dean toss the keys to Sammy, "I call shotgun!" I yelled before Dean could get into the car.
"Aw, come on!" He grumbled with a small smile as Sammy and I got into Baby.
I put my head outside the window and called to him, "What are you waiting for lover boy!"
He reluctantly walked into the backseat with a pout on his face. I turned around and placed a hand on his cheek as Baby purred to life.
I pulled his face closer to kiss him as I heard Sammy gag in the background, "No more pouty face okay."
I sat back in my chair and looked at Sammy, "And what are you five?" I sassed.
Sammy chuckled in response, "Just drive." I giggled and lightly shoved him.
I snuggled into the chair as Sammy drove off and closed my eyes to doze off.
