Renji’s eyes seemed almost unreadable, but filled with thousands of violent emotions, before a deep sadness watered them and made them empty. Two empty black orbs watching at samurai. His hand hovered over Genichiro’s cheekbone, traces of blood and mud still there, dirtying the skin.

Renji wasn’t known as someone especially soft and patient ; actually, in a general manner, he was described as rebellious, violent, impatient… Yet he could be a completely different person with people he loved. Like many other individuals for sure.

“I’ll never leave you. And if I had to… if you truly can’t renounce, then I’ll live here… anchored to you, he insisted, using the same words purposefully.

The soul reaper was ready for this sacrifice. He hadn’t told Genichiro yet, but he had already given submitted his resignation to his taicho - or rather ex-taicho - Byakuya Kuchiki.

- I won’t force you to anything,” Renji faintly smiled.

The soft touche upon his skin, soothing his tired mind. Leaning against it, kissing his palm gently with his lips. The words touched him so deeply. But such an promise seemed to good to be true.

"What if you regret it? Swearing your life to be with me....you have other duties. I know it."

The other seemed so sincere with it. But he wouldn't feel right if he allowed him to commit to such a promise. With others he did not care whether they swear themselves to him. Throwing a bag of sen at their faces. But to those he truly cared for, he would want only the best he could give.

And to Renji, a better life than this.

"I swear to you, once this is all over, the lands will be much more beautiful than what you see now. You deserve better."

The truth in his words stung so deeply. More than a sword would do that would pierce his flesh. It was something he knew at the back of his mind but never wanted it to be said. If said then it would mean that what he did was fruitless. He did so much, trained so much so that he would be strong. To fight against those who wanted to see the downfall of what was created.

Jaw clenched slightly, silent as he had no words to speak. How would he escape this life that was given to him? Feeling that he had to repay his grandfather for taking him in, for even giving a damn about him when he was an orphan from war. 

“I know you speak the truth. How would I even go with you when I’m anchored down to this place?”

He whispered, pain apparent in his tone as he lowered his head, looking elsewhere besides his lover. He had to stay, but at the same time, he wanted to go with him. To feel free from all of this. Tired eyes closing in thought, exhaling softly before lifting his head to look at Renji. The one who appeared and was able to calm the storm that surrounded him. The rage that wrapped its claws around him, drowning him if he wasn’t living up to the expectations placed upon him. The judgeful eyes that were thrown his way, even ones by his grandfather. He felt so very lost in his position.

“I.....I don’t know what to do....”

Everybody was wondering where that man came from. Dirty, scarred all the way from chin to toes. Most had been wary of him, extremely wary even, as some dangerous aura emanated from that stranger, that unknown man who wouldn’t reveal much about himself. Renji, on the other hand, had always loved to play with fire… Unconsciously. Even if he had to get burnt, which practically always happened, in the process. Moreover, he was not like the others, he’d leave this guy a chance. Who said it had to be a criminal ? A bad person ? Weren’t they all bad persons anyway ?

He took the time to speak with him, to try to learn to know him. He got a name. He got a few information here and there. And ultimately… he didn’t got a stab or anything violent like this. But a kiss. The night had fallen, they were sharing a drink like every single night before. Genichiro had been even more silent tonight than he usually would be. Renji didn’t mind it ; he knew he was a man of few words and was making the conversation, telling him about his day. As he stood up though, he quickly realized he had been even more drinking than talking. He slipped and fell right into the giant samurai’s arms, his hands clamping on his shoulders for support.

A shame he just had to fall from a little too high and his lips locked with Genichiro’s. The two men went completely rigid, as if petrified as soon as they were kissing, something that clearly none of them had been seeing coming. One could have pulled away, but none of them did. Not too fast at least… After a moment that could be caused by their utter confusion, they finally broke the kiss, cheeks slightly flushed, especially Renji’s, who muttered a pathetic “good night” before fleeing away, confused and blushing.

The touch was almost electric, not used to feeling such soft touches on his face. So tender that matched the other’s eyes. Knowing that concern was written in his eyes and breathed as he spoke, the samurai merely shook his head.

“Who knows. I don’t even know.”

Genichiro always pushed through no matter what time it was in the day. It felt the same to him. Almost repetitive really considering the amount of things he did, the responsibility that rested upon his broad shoulders. And yet here he was, carrying Renji in his arms as he was worried that he was pushing himself.

“I think it would be easier to relax if you’re the one that would remind me.”

He would rarely listen to others if they weren’t close to him. But he made exceptions to others. If Renji kept reminding him, he might not end up hurting himself later in the future.

How quickly my muse responds to your texts: As soon as possible. He is one of the few persons for whom Renji is really trying to keep his phone on him all day long. He’s always scared of getting some bad urgent news concerning Genichiro.

How often our muses text: Not very often, but the frequency doesn’t mean their bond isn’t strong. Quite the contrary actually. The silence is even a bit painful, but Renji knows it’s just not in Genichiro’s habits to use a damn phone.

It’s hard to tell in-game but Genichiro actually has a scar across his back that matches up with the tear through his cloak and a crack through his armor (which you can only see in this artbook)

A headless?

That’s impossible. There was no way he could be something that was only spoken of as a myth. He had never seen one in person and never really wanted to as he never believed in it. But he was now living proof of it. Although he still had his head compared to the other ones.

Blinking several times as he stared at the one who had caused his death. Who had made him like this. No, he was panicking and becoming angry. He needed to calm down. Maybe it was all a dream. Some nightmare due to his lack of sleep and care.

“It’s a nightmare. That’s all it is. This isn’t real.”

He kept whispering to himself. Eyes flickering to his body that rose, noticing the hands clenching tightly into a fist. Shoulders hunched as he would usually do when he was in a state of panic.

“I’m not a headless. This is a dream, right?”

Trying to be hopeful as his eyes went to look back at the Shura. Speaking words that would try to ease the doubt that reflected upon his dark eyes. He knew this wasn’t a nightmare. It felt so real.

No matter how much he wanted him to leave, he would not. Knowing that he would end up hurting him if his rage wrapped its claw around him. Suffocating him once again that caused the demise of Ashina and those who sided with the Interior Ministry. He wasn’t sure if his own sword cut down those he cared for. All he knew he was following him, not having him leave his sight.

It was peculiar of him to be so very persistent with the Shinobi. Maybe it was the fact that he lost everything. The lands he swore to protect as well as the man who took him under his wing. Training him to be the leader he believed he would be. The successor that he would be proud of as he would allow time to take him.

Yet there was nothing to fight for. No one that would greet him and congratulate him. The only person he knew that would even give a damn about him was the Shinobi who had become Shura. Not entirely as he had regained his sanity. Calming after he had bitten into his flesh, suckling the blood that dripped like an animal. It stung, but he didn’t move as he only wished to hold him. Two lost souls having nothing.

Was it selfish of him to cling onto him? Giving him some sort of meaning after their several encounters? But he knew he wanted him here, to be alive with him. That was what he wished for as he wanted Okami to be his future rival. But as fate pulled the strings of their lives, giving them no room to breathe, it wasn’t so. It was unfair.

“I will not. Stay here. With me.”

His voice was stern as he stared at him. Clearly angered by his persistence. Genichiro’s shoulders slowly lowered, head tilting to look at the ground. A sigh escaping his parched lips as he had not drank any water. Combing the dark locks away from his tired and dirtied face.

“Please...Okami...I know no one else except you....”

A mere whisper upon the wind as fists clenched at his weak appearance. Even when their encounters were only brief, he felt his soul ignited with life. Not dull as he walked across this land trying to keep everything alive. An empty shell but this man seemed to have relit something within him. Shaking his head as it was still so very selfish of him. Depending on this man to somehow make him feel whole.

The rejection still stung, only clenching his jaw tightly as he wouldn’t want to blurt out words he would regret. As seconds passed, he pleaded once more. If he wished to be left alone....he would accept this.

Genichiro suffers a lot of self doubt and anxiety. He is aware that he isn't strong when he needs to be. The weight of Ashina, the judgeful glances thrown his way, everything causes him stress. But he hides it well. If someone caught wind of his behaviour, it would surely be the end of him. He focuses on his goal which had lead him this far. Except when he was defeated, he was a bit shocked when he had trained endlessly and using the teachings of Lady Tomoe.

He is aware that his grandfather has shown some doubt, even shame when he sees the flicker in his eyes. He ignores it as it would plague his mind and distract him. Still, he wished that he was as strong as grandfather, being an adopted child of war.
