Summary:

Sometimes it just takes one wrong move, one slightly stronger swing of a shield, and an entire universe is doomed as their only hope withers away in a cold desolate bunker.

Back in time, and with visions of a possible future in his head, Tony needs to decide what his next steps would be and what to change without things going off the deep end.

Once again, he was cursed with the sight of the end, and once again, he was the only one. Maybe this time, they will listen to him.

Hello everyone and welcome to my new obsession! I hope that I can do these amazing characters the justice they deserve and that you'll be able to enjoy this as much as I did, and still do as I write this adventure. There are, however, four things I want to make clear before we get this started.

1. Yes, I am doing the classic time travel fix it (it is kind of an obsession of mine) and this fic spins off from Captain America: Civil War. I am well aware that this has been done quite a bit, but I hope I can bring something new to the table for everyone to enjoy.

Infinity War and Endgame will be mentioned at some point, but I decided to cut it because I can't write romance to save my life, no matter the characters, and would probably end up ruining Tony and Pepper's relationship. Additionally, Morgan Stark is a loose thread and I can't find a way to incorporate her without destroying Tony completely. There are very few things you can't ever complete shake off, and the death of your child is one of them. (or in this case never existing because you can't love the same woman like before.)

2. This is more of a Team Iron Man Fic, but there is going to be no character bashing beyond what is needed. All characters are respected, but I won't shy away from pointing out mistakes. I believe we are all grown ups and can share our views respectfully, and this won't lead to any messes in the comment section. (Just a warning, because from previous fics I have read, things got ugly pretty fast.)

3. This is just something that I had a lot of fun with and would like to share it with you guys. Constructive thoughts are welcomed and I would love to hear any and all ideas on where this thing could be heading. Also, please point out any and all mistakes as English isn't my first language and there is no beta. Updates will be sporadic.

4. The two fics mentioned are both works of art. There is no other way of describing them. They both inspired me for some parts of this story and for me to actually post it. There are going to be some similarities, but for the most part, this work is entirely my own. This is just a shout out to these two, because really, I can’t say enough times just how beautiful and well written they are.

part of tony stark’s character that I REALLY appreciate is how he responds to other intelligent people. if he was truly as egotistical as we’re asked to believe, he wouldn’t act the way he does in situations where intellect, his strongest attribute, is the forefront of the conversation.

in im2, when he’s confronted with copycats of people who’ve tried to make his suit, and failed, he makes fun of them and puts them on display. he’s trying to win an argument here, he’s got a lot of eyes on him, he needs to play up the belief that he’s the ONLY person who can make these suits.

however, when whiplash succeeds to make a copycat, and tries to kill him — tony goes into prison cell, one on one, and talks to him about the tech. asks him questions, prods him on how he did it. because he recognizes the ingenuity there, and he respects intelligent people. he wants to learn, and the best way for him to learn are from people he considers peers.

and he does this with younger smart people too. with harley keener, in im3, he asks him questions about his potato gun. it’s a dinky little invention, nothing groundbreaking, but tony sees the intelligence required of an eleven year old to make something like that out of the materials available to him. potatoes, crude engineering of hamster cage parts.

and again, in civil war, meeting peter for the first time. he asks him about the webshooters. “this is impressive work. who designed these? how are you pulling this off?” because again, he sees and respects intelligence. particularly in the untraditional ways. things made out of dumpster parts. scrap metal. crude engineering.

exactly this ^^^ and this is why tony doesn’t respect hammer, either. he’s nowhere near as intelligent, and he doesn’t care to learn or fix his mistakes. tony doesn’t like that and has no problems making fun of him. especially because hammer is trying to copy his tech with no additional ingenuity.

ik everyone ignores Age of Ultron, but his exchange with Dr. Helen Cho is so iconic and proves this point. When she talks about the nanotechnology they're working on "Those clunky metal suits will be left in the dust" and he replies "That's the plan."

Tony doesn't even care about pioneering or patenting the "most advanced technology." He only cares about the development of technological advancement for its uses in PROTECTION AGAINST NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN THREATS.

A What If... Marvel Writing Prompt/Idea

What if ... Thanos were a little bit smarter? He knows he makes enemies wherever he goes and that his decision with the gauntlet would basically turn the rest of the universe against him. So, what if, for his wish to the stones, he didn’t just ask for half the universe to be erased, but also forgotten?

The only person who remembers the people who used to be is Scott Lang, recently released from being trapped for five years in the quantum realm. He’s coming back to a very different world that doesn’t truly know it’s changed. How will he convince the remaining Avengers that they need to get their asses into gear and fix everything?

So, I want to preface this by saying that my brain works in a lot of jumps and starts so some of this will be oddly detailed paragraphs and some will just be bullet points of general overviews. Though the bullet points might also get slightly detailed – I love a good sub-point. I also wish to say that this is not everything I have on my idea, but a lot of my other notes are just general timelines in bullet format of the MCU.

Speaking of the MCU, this is a mashup of MCU and some comic lore. I haven’t seen much of the MCU works since Endgame with the exceptions of No Way Home, Multiverse of Madness, and Deadpool and Wolverine. I know that many of the characters that I reference in this have continued storylines in the MCU at the moment, but screw the MCU to be honest, a lot of their decisions are frustrating.

I’d also like to mention that I found a decent amount of inspiration from the author @gozzer on AO3 and their Marvel WIPs. Specifically, chapters 3, 4, and 8. I don’t know how exactly to tag them since this isn’t an inspired by work, just that I want to recognize that I have found inspiration in their stuff.

I so so so hope someone can find inspiration in my ramblings and loose thought trails. That’s the ultimate goal for me. I’m never going to be one of the really great authors on here that churns out hundreds of thousands of words that make you feel things for a character you never thought you would, but maybe I can give one of them an inkling of what their next story might be.

So, onto the story as I see it:

In this, Scott would still be taken out of the quantum portal by the rat in the realm and have his stumble to Maggie’s house, but this time around there are no memorial stones to honor those who got dusted, or missing persons posters everywhere. He can tell something is off but not what until he gets to Maggie’s and asks about Cassie and Maggie and Jim have no idea what/who he’s talking about. Then he starts seeing the things he missed – less people, less cars, less noise, etc. Maggie tries to ask where he’s been for the past five years, but Scott is spiraling and hightails it back to the van. Uses the van to find Luis and asks for help understanding what he’s missed, Luis does his classic recap but he’s not mentioning anything related to Hank or Hope or Janet. Scott asks, but again, another person who has no clue what he’s talking about. He asks Luis to go with him to New York to find some information and Luis is the best ever so he says yes and they set off for the Avenger’s compound. Natasha and Steve are watching the security cameras like in the movie and let him in but this time instead of being focused on time/quantum travel, he’s focused on that fact that so many people are missing and no one realizes.

He'll have all this evidence that will compound as more players enter, such as Carol and later Tony and Nebula. His big piece of evidence is the “civil war”, that’s just a really sad fight when most of the people don’t exist. And it doesn’t entirely make sense if Bucky’s not there, and what happened later between Tony and Steve definitely won’t make sense without Bucky (though this would be Tony’s piece to say since Scott wouldn’t know about it.)

I’d kind of want FRIDAY to be able to remember people but not as an ai/ system, but as a person kind of. Like she doesn’t exactly remember Peter, but she remembers Underoos, or the Pirate for Fury, maybe even Manchurian Candidate for Bucky. Maybe also an archived version of JARVIS still exists and is scrounged up by FRIDAY, Karen, EDITH, whoever as they band together because their systems are telling them something is wrong. And JARVIS pops up is just all, where is everyone? Especially would be cool if he had a semi-conscious state in Vision the entire time and so is like really focused on where Vision is and no one can answer. Like Tony’s all weepy about JARVIS being back, and JARVIS is like yeah no missed you too, where’s my son?????

I kind of also have this set in my head as a Scott/Tony/Stephen fic with a three-pronged point of view approach. Scott would know everything that’s happened and is trying to get everything back to normal. Tony would be focused on the present and trying to fix everything as a way of coping/not dealing with his trauma. Stephen would be in the Soul Stone either watching over them, or watching over the people in the stone along with others like T’challa, Sam, Bucky, etc.

This is vaguely how this will be set up: my take on the stones, my take on the runes of kof-kol, quantum vs time travel, the three main povs, ships I have in mind, and then random add-ons I’ve thought of, Gozzer related stuff

Sentient infinity stones

Stones were created with the Big Bang and have been searching for and/or hopping champions ever since

Only champions have full access to their stone’s ability (such as the Aether has been Loki’s since he was born, but it was temporarily controlled by the dark elves and Jane Foster)

Thanos has always been a set event/person so the stones all needed a champion during this time period and drew them together

They try to stay away from each other so that those like Thanos who wish to collect them don’t have any easy time

Champions:

Stephen - Time (eye of Agomotto)

Is able to bend with time, has lived millions of lifetimes

Tony - Soul (Vormir)

He makes souls with his bots and ais

Mantis - Mind (scepter and later Vision’s)

She can control people and manipulate their emotions already and is half-celestial (Ego)

Loki - Reality (Aether)

Trickster god that’s been wearing a full coverage disguise so convincing he didn’t even know his entire life

Goose (Flerkens as a species) -Space (Tessaract)

Have a pocket dimension inside each of them

The tesseract is entrusted to the species as a whole either because flerkens were made specifically to be carriers/champions of the Space stone or because of their individual pocket dimensions

Tesseract gets passed from flerken to flerken based on their own system (I do not know flerken politics)

Possibly there’s one specific entrusted line of flerkens that Goose is descended from????

Home planet was destroyed during the age of Eson the Searcher, so they became a wandering/nomadic species

Nebula - Power (Orb)

Her body was made into a weapon always ready for an upgrade

Is actually able to use the stones in the comics so she’s good

The Runes of Kof-Kol:

This is the basis for how Thanos makes people forget the ones dusted (obviously inspired by No Way Home)

Have the ability to make an entire universe forget a person, thing, or event

Possible to make certain people exempt but must be part of the original casting

At peak potency, it can wipe any traces of an entity from existence, even from the caster

Past accomplishments and events affected by said entity aren’t touched, just redirected (i.e. people saved by Spiderman don’t suddenly die)

Quantum travel: time travel vs dimension travel:

The quantum realm sits in its own pocket of reality so isn’t affected by the reality stones, which makes it immune to the snap in general. But also quantum travel would be about different realities rather than different times. To me it makes more sense that the “time heist” was dimension (quantum) travel rather than time travel as they change the events taking place and even interact with their own selves (Captain and Captain) but the current events don’t change at all nor do new memories surface. It’s most likely that they stole some other reality’s stones rather than getting the stones from an earlier point in time like they believed. Especially if they’re using the quantum technology that Janet, Hank, and Scott have created. Why would quantum energy send them back in time? It just doesn’t make sense to me. And while I kind of hate how the TVA basically made the infinity stones obsolete with how they constantly steal the stones and gauntlets, it does help me with my theory. (Screw the TVA they deserve to be snapped (I say this from the point of view specifically seen from Deadpool and Wolverine))

Also, doing it this way forces Steve to not be a douche and stay back in time when he was supposed to be returning the stones. I mean the ripples of that alone would be abysmal. Would Peggy even found SHIELD if Steve is with her? He knows all these things like Nazi dude in the computer at Point whats-it and everything that Bucky has to go through, and Mr. “Till the end of the line” just sits back and lets it happen??? No.

Anyway

Scott-centric at least to start off with

Cassie gets snapped

Bill (og Goliath) gets snapped before he and Ava leave the country so she’s stuck hiding from the government, trying to find Scott

Maybe gets taken in by Luis, Kurt, and Dave? (irresponsible older brother types)

At least keeps tabs on all of them to see if Scott shows back up

Definitely sneaks into the back of the van when Scott and Luis go to the Compound

Scott parents the heck out of her

Scott gets the Goliath suit, and Luis takes over as Goliath

Also, side note, I really don’t think Luis would be holding up all that well without Scott, especially cause to him Scott just kind of disappears for 5 years

I think it would kind of break something in him and when Scott gets back, he would try and be his normal happy self but it’s not quite right

Luis angst

He was initially in the QR for the same reasons – to get quantum particles for Ava to stabilize her

I want him to have a little more back bone

Like his daughter is not only gone, but her own mother can’t remember she ever existed

My man is pissed

No letting Tony or Cap or any of them walk all over him

And he wouldn’t let them willy-knilly have the Pym particles

He wouldn’t betray Hank like that

The others would think he made them since Hank doesn’t exist and he’s all like “no, these are Hank’s” “Who’s Hank?” “A guy your dad screwed over” “You’re gonna have to be more specific for that”

Scott is a genius and I want that genuinely acknowledged

Tony notices ;)

 

Tony’s pov could start on the ship or during the battle of titan (I have the very beginnings of a titan based prologue written down if anyone is interested)

Semi-Superior Ironman as Nebula uses technology to fix as much of Tony as she can while they’re stranded (it’s what she knows)

Could be a great bonding moment with Nebula – shared trauma yay

Though it could happen other times - the two that stick out the most would be the end of IM3 or Civil War Siberia fight

Exodus could also be used, either as a dormant function waking up when his body becomes damaged in CW or in Infinity Wars

Tony is uber depressed and can kind of feel like things are wrong/gone because of his status as the Soul stone champion and feeling that there should be more souls around

He keeps doing things that don’t make sense until Scott shows up saying people are gone and have been forgotten

Such as reaching out his hand for a tool, not from Dum-E but from a person in his lab

He keeps coming up with weapon/suit concepts that make no sense - does he want to give Natasha actual webs?

I can definitely see him spiraling back into his alcoholism

This is probably one of the factors that leads to Morgan

Throws himself into trying to make everything “normal” again by throwing as much money at it as possible

Obviously his Wanda-induced nightmares are back with a vengeance

Cloak doesn’t get snapped with Stephen, so stays with Tony

Cloak and Nebula have semi-beef due to Cloak feeling the need to protect Tony and Nebula basically doing open-heart surgery on him while in space

Since he semi-comes into contact with the Soul stone on Titan, he can feel souls a little more

He can tell that DUM-E, U, Butterfingers, FRIDAY, etc are sentient

Cloak has a soul/is sentient

He knows before Pepper does that she’s pregnant

This also causes him to spiral

I feel like this could be a cool way to add in other characters that don’t get added till later in canon cause he’d be able to feel people’s relationship’s/how they leave traces on each other’s souls

I’m thinking specifically of Yelena if that’s not obvious

Yelena and Natasha deserve to be reunited

Who would freak out more about Natasha having a sister: Clint or Tony?

 

Stephen ‘s pov is mostly from inside of the Soul stone

He and some others (T’challa, Sam, Bucky, Hank, Janet, etc) take a leadership role and try to organize things as much as possible

Time works differently inside the stone

He parents the heck out of Peter and Cassie

He knows that there’s a high possibility that he’ll end up dating their dads

Also they’re annoyingly adorable and persistent

He regrets introducing them slightly

Spies as much as he can on the outside world

Due to this maybe he accidently finds the TVA’s pocket-dimension??

I want Loki redemption so badly, I love him

He deserved it more than some of the others that got it (I’m looking at you Thaddeus)

When they leave the Soul stone, Stephen is hightailing it to Scott and Tony

He’s been waiting alone while they’ve been able to build at least a little bit of a relationship while working together

Pining

Maybe he and America kind of brush by each other as he’s looking out and she’s hopping through?

This might also be a place to add in Donna and Victor

Like they’re both dead but maybe their souls could visit Stephen since he’s in the Soul stone?

If we’re doing that though, I want Ben to visit Peter. I don’t care if MCU Peter doesn’t have an Uncle Ben, yes he does

Side note: I feel like T’challa in particular would have an affinity for navigating the Soul stone since his family/the Black Panthers are all connected, so like soul stuff?

 

Ships:

Scott/Tony/Stephen is my personal endgame from this fic idea but I understand that not everyone would see that

Scott/Tony would happen while they’re working on a solution for time travel

Stephen would be added after everything happens

Stephen definitely sees it all going down before hand, across multiple realities

Could be the “I-fell-for-you-before-we-even-knew-each-other” trope

As for Morgan, she’s kind of a take or leave character for me since (to my knowledge) she doesn’t really have a backstory or personality outside of being Tony and Pepper’s daughter

So I’d personally have Morgan be a surprise pregnancy where Pepper and Tony sleep together one last time after he gets back to earth from the initial fight with Thanos (and is all healed up and everything)

Also Scott/Stephen/Tony to me would be hilarious as I would absolutely ply them with so many children/proteges

Cassie, Peter, Morgan, Harley, Ava, Nebula, Vision, Riri, America, others (are there others? Am I missing anyone?)

Or the fact that they all have weird side characters/compainions: the cloak, DUM-E, U, Butterfingers, FRIDAY, all of Scott’s ants

And can you imagine a meeting of their friends?????

Like here’s the CEO of Stark Industries - one of the leading women in all of business - Virginia “Pepper” Potts, the head of security for SI, and Lt. Colonel James Rhodes

Stephen shows up with, maybe, Christine who while a cool lady, very civilian. And Wong – was the Sorcerer Supreme before Stephen came back, is the librarian for an ancient magic civilization

Then there’s Luis, Kurt, and Dave. Luis would be having the time of his life. Hope may show up but 100% more to meet Pepper than anything else

Vision/Mantis

She only knows emotions, he knows everything but emotions

They would be a very naïve, innocent couple

They would teach each other

Screw Wanda – I am very much a Wanda hater, everything about Wanda/Vision was horrible because of her and her alone

Both Mantis and Vision are very childlike so I think they’d have a very unique relationship that others wouldn’t really understand

Like she would constantly be feeding him emotions or trying to feel for his emotions and he would tell her anything and everything

Outsiders think it’s a bit weird, possibly annoying or seemingly invasive, but it’s done with both of their full consent

Also imagine Vision explaining all his parental figures to Mantis who only had Ego since Ego definitely killed her mom/bearer once she was born

“Oh yes, I was born from the combined work of Dr. Banner, Dr. Stark, Dr, Cho, Thor, Thanos, and Ultron. I think in relative practice to a family that would mean I have five fathers and one mother. Though I had to kill Ultron soon after my birth unfortunately.”

She’d be so surprised and intrigued

Also the fact that in my head/au Mantis is the Champion for the Mind stone which kind of keeps Vision alive could also be brought up (in a non-controlling relationship way)

Random bits and bobs:

No Bruce-Hulk hybrid, it was weird

Now if there is acknowledgement that Hulk is his own person and Bruce understands that, I’ll take it

I want everyone to remember that Hulk is like less than a decade old and one of his first memories is being shot at by the US military

He’s allowed to be angry

Bruce should be nicer to him

“Time heist” difference – Tony and Steve go to Vormir while Natasha and Clint go to 2012 New York

Steve punches the shit out of Red Skull

The Soul Stone kind of just appears for Tony since he is the champion

Natasha would be a more believable shield turncoat then Steve, but would also absolutely obliterate Brock and his men in that elevator

I feel like Clint could’ve done some acrobatic stuff to get away from stair-rampaging Hulk

Or he would’ve, very delightfully, shot Loki so he wouldn’t get away

All of Thanos’s “children” are the runts/ deformed of their species just like him

Lumphoids (Nebula’s species) are typically (in the comics) about 12 feet tall and weighs 2 tons

That’s not exactly Nebula

I like the thought of Thanos in his twisted mind seeing it as merciful to take the runts of the species before/after delivering balance to them

Is this wholly based off of Nebula? Yes. Do I care? No

More Hela

Thanos's whole balance is a courting gift to Death

I do not recognize Audrey Plaza's Lady Death, it complete fucks with everything Thanos stood for

So Hela, as the goddess of death, would be the one receiving these "gifts"

She's not happy

He's both creepy and he's taking her job

Also, I like the idea of Hela trying to instigate Ragnarok specifically to get soldiers from Valhalla to help her fight Thanos

Also also, Fenrir is Loki's child, I feel like that should have some impact on things

Hela is not happy that Thanos tries to/does kill Loki and tortures Thor

Only she is allowed to kill/torture her brothers

During the five years, I can 100% see Hela making fun of Thor for losing himself to grief

Maybe she takes over as queen instead of Brunhile/Valkerie?

Could you imagine Hela in the final battle against Thanos? It would be glorious

Chapter 3: Soul-Stone Scott – Scott is in the Quantum Realm and ends up in the Soul stone through a trade agreement (QR gets his body, SS gets his soul), he interacts with those snapped and they figure out the Soul stone wants him for something. The Soul stone wants a new host and has decided to use Scott. Canon events happen except Scott can see souls and ends up saving Tony’s life

I love the idea of Scott having some connection to the stones, and even outside of my shipping of Scott/Tony/Stephen, the Soul or Time stones would make the most sense for Scott to have contact with due to his trip into the QR

Scott being like a stopgap between inside and outside the Soul stone could work so well for my ship though

This would probably effect Tony’s champion status since Scott would have like first priority, so I would do it more of a temporary thing until the stones get their original forms back and Tony is still the Soul’s champion

But like Tony being the champion while Scott is/isholding the stone??? Could be cute

Chapter 4: Scott/Tony – Pre/during-IM1. Scott isn’t in jail and helps build the Iron Man suit and repulsor tech. Events of IM2 happen before Scott eventually ends up in jail trying to take out his old job. Events of Avengers, IM3, AoU, and Ant-Man happen before they’re reunited in Civil War but with Scott on Tony’s side. Again, mostly canon events for Ant-Man and Wasp, Infinity Wars, and the beginning of Endgame. Scott and Tony fall together during the making of the quantum portal for the time heist, a years long inevitability. Instead of Steve going with Tony to get new particles and the Tesseract, Scott does.

This one is just general vibes for Scott/Tony

Chapter 8: Tearing at the seams – Time doesn’t work as differently in the Quantum realm. Scott experiences all five years of pure isolation, and possibly more depending on how time dilations. The rat didn’t get him out, he projected himself to people begging for help. He kind of goes insane. The healing fields become a part of Scott like they did Janet.

Again, I just really like the idea of Scott being affected by the QR

This also mentions that there are time vortexes isolating the healing fields from the rest of the QR, which could work with what I said above about Scott possibly having a connection to the Time stone

Peter is arrested for the murder of Quentin Beck. He’s put on The Raft, where they put power dampening cuffs on him, they keep him weak and tired and dumb. He sits alone for so long in a solitary cell, freezing and underfed, that he starts hallucinating Tony talking to him.

“Hey, kid. Don’t fall asleep too long. I know your head hurts. Wake up. Come on.”

“Alrighty, sleepyhead. Put your chin up. Let me see your eyes. Good boy.”

“Up and at ‘em, Parker. Give me the first two-hundred digits of PI. Don’t give me that look, I’m still the boss.”

Sometimes, when Peter’s fever gets high enough, he can press his forehead into the cool metal wall of the cell, and he can imagine that he’s leaning against an Iron Man suit.

It helps him get through the night. That’s really all he can hope for.

tony survived the snap but has been kept on the ramp for testing. He’s in the cell next door. Nothing he says or does convinces Peter he’s real, though. Sometimes he wonders himself if he is.

“Stephen,” Tony said quietly, voice pulling Stephen’s attention away from his work. “I think you should take a break.”

Stephen blinked, looking away from the canvas of greens, blues, and purples with other flashes of colors intermixed. “I’m almost done.”

“No you’re not,” Tony said. There was no judgment in the words, just fact. Stephen glanced at the canvas he’d started. It looked mostly finished, but he’d been known to spend extensive amounts of time ‘perfecting’ it. Tony was probably right. “And if you do finish this one, you’ll just start another.”

Stephen frowned, because he didn’t always do that. But he had to admit the itch was under his skin that meant Tony might be right. Again. Tony normally was. He’d learned to read some of Stephen’s moods and tics better than Stephen even realized they were happening.

“Stephen,” Tony said gently and Stephen had to look away again. “You need to stop for the day.”

Tony was probably right there, too. Which was highly irritating. But getting irritated at Tony rarely helped. Tony had figured out how to weather those moods and they always left Stephen feeling shitty in the aftermath.

Stephen found it hard to look away from the canvas he’d been painting of the dark dimension, a vivid nightmare that if he put on canvas maybe wouldn’t follow him into his dreams. When he finished it would join the dozens of others hidden in a storage room covered by table cloth or tarp because Stephen might need to exorcise his demons, but he didn’t really want to see them in the aftermath. And he certainly didn’t want anyone else to see them. Tony was the only one who got that rather dubious honor.

“Just a few more minutes.”

That made Tony sigh. He entered the room, moving to Stephen’s side and gently taking the paintbrush from Stephen’s hand. Teal green paint dripped from the tip and fell to the plastic-covered floor. “You were the one who asked me to step in when you needed it,” Tony reminded him.

It was true. Tony hadn’t dared the first few weeks, trying to give Stephen what he needed. Stephen had realized he wouldn’t be able to stop himself when he spent every evening for nine days in a row retreating to his canvases, trying to perfect the vision of the dark dimension on canvas because if he got it just right it would finally have a place outside his own mind. He and Tony had set up guidelines for Stephen’s own health but it was hard following them. But it was the third time this week and Tony was right.

“It’ll be a bad night,” Stephen warned. But it would be a bad night even if he stayed in here another one, two, three hours. What was the difference?

“That’s fine,” Tony said. He’d probably say that even if it wasn’t fine, but Stephen had agreed to accept it when Tony had said it. Tony had pointed out it’d be hypocritical for him to not, after Stephen had said the same thing when Tony’s nightmares had been particularly bad. “I’ll have some books on the bedside table. When you wake up I can read a bit until you fall asleep again. I even grabbed poetry.” He said the word with proper disgust, despite the fact that Tony was the one who had chosen and discovered that poetry worked wonders to help Stephen fall back asleep.

It was lucky, maybe, that Stephen had married a man who had a somewhat alarming ability to operate on very little sleep. Funny how that had used to be the bane of Stephen’s existence.

“All right,” Stephen said. He looked back at the painting, willed the canvas to contain his nightmares for the night. Then he allowed himself to follow Tony from the room and left the dark dimension behind for as long as he could.

There has never been a director’s commentary for the Iron Man films that included Jon Favreau and RDJ.  While promoting The Jungle Book, Favreau told Reddit that they actually did do an unofficial one back in 2008 for an Iron Man screening but it was not officially recorded by the venue.

Someone in attendance did manage to record the whole thing and it was shared on Reddit yesterday, eight years later.

The screening took place on September 6, 2008 at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica, CA and was hosted by American Cinematheque as part of their “Live Commentary” series.

favreau was simply indulging rdj when rdj suggested that tony make everyone sit down on the floor for the first press conference, saying that he went along with the kooky idea ‘once’ just so rdj would trust him as a director – but then ended up keeping it in bc it was so tony

rdj and favreau agreeing that the scene where pepper reaches into the arc reactor casing in tony’s chest is their ‘favorite scene’

the execs wanted to know why tony was drinking “that green shit,” which seemed to detract from the scene; favreau tells that rdj was adamant that tony would want to heal his body with superfoods

the reason that tony ridicules dum-e and U so much is that these bots were used pre-production in a superbowl commercial to promote the upcoming movie, to show off what kind of ‘cool tech’ tony has around – rdj got annoyed by that, saying “these are THE DUMBEST robots anyone would ever have 🙄😑” – so when it came time to shoot his scenes with them he didn’t bother to hide how he really felt about them

↑ the photo of the iron man suit used in this newspaper shot was taken by real paparazzi, who caught up with the crew while they were shooting on a closed highway and snuck some photos; favreau thought it would be 'cool’ to get back at them by using their shot in this scene, but then they sued marvel for $5 million for stealing their photo

putting the bonus scene at the end of the credits roll wasn’t something favreau originally wanted to do, worried that people would miss it – but it turned out that when ppl did in fact learn that they missed a scene at the end, they came back to watch the whole movie again just to catch that scene, which boosted box office revenue (this idea was suggested to him by dir. edgar wright, who happened to be at skywalker ranch during an early screening of the movie, and thought that sam jackson’s scene didn’t land right where favreau had initially included it early in the credits sequence. marvel was unhappy with this call until they saw how well it played with audiences)
