Um..WHAT?!
What?
Sorry, still getting used to the new tongue 😛
Traitor.
Grindelwald was fond of your form but you’re no diamond yourself pal.
Grindelwald’s bestfriend (bff) is back 🐍
"Can I get ya anything Mr Abernathy sir?" Queenie popped her head around the door of his office with a smile and a loose strand of hair falling in her face
Abernathy looked up from his work with a little shock, he thought he was alone in the office. He thought they’d all gone home for the night. Yet here Queenie stood glowing as always. ‘I th-think I’m ok, I thought you’d gone home?’ He fumbled over his words regretting instantly that he hadn’t been more confident with his response.
She smiled at him reassuringly
“Shift ends at 11:45, can I get ya anything?” she walked in with her little tray and put it on his desk and browsed around his room
His eyes followed her as she almost danced from cabinet to cabinet. ‘Could I have a coffee perhaps? No milk, two sugars? It’s a late one for me tonight. Lots of temporary wand permits that need filing’. He smiled awkwardly ‘How are you tonight Queenie?’
“Oh you know..” she turned and flicked her wand and the coffee started making itself “Same old” she sighed biting her lip “Late nights dont sound fun.. good luck with those permits”
He grabbed the scorching coffee and gulped it despite it burning his throat. ‘Could you grab me the file on Bulgarian wandmakers?’ He shook his head in disbelief ‘Boromila Borislava? I have never heard of that wandmaker before in my life? Are they just making it up as they go?’
She handed it to him and sat down opposite with her feet up on the other chair
“Aint he the one that designs for the Cauldron Cassidys? that Jazz group, he made they’re wands” she giggled. “You should take a break honey”
He put his head into his hands ‘you’re right, I’m too tired. I’m forgetting the names of obscure Bulgarian wandmakers again’ he chuckled to himself ‘how could I forget the cauldron cassidys?’ He took another long gulp of his coffee that was still too hot. He winced a little and then sighed.
She giggled “Here let me try” she took a file from his desk and glanced at it. “Oh I get this, I dont mind helping ya, everyone else has gone home”
He shook his head ‘I can’t let you, you need to be heading off soon, your shift ends in 15 minutes and you need to get home. Don’t want you walking home too late in the dark’ He sighed. ‘Maybe I’ll escort you home, I need to leave soon anyway’
Queenie smiled. “Sure thing, you should finish up, aint you got a shift at 6am?”She looked at his timetable upside down from where she was sitting by his desk.
He sighed heavily ‘yup, I’ve got to be up in 5 hours to keep working’ he gulped at his now drinkable coffee ‘you ever think about going on holiday queenie? Just a few weeks of relaxation?’
Queenie thought for a moment. “My jobs easy, I dont think I need one” she brushed the strand of hair that had fallen into her face which then moved to the exact same place again.
He looked at her ‘I wish I could say that’ he chuckled. ‘Maybe I should clock out for the night’ he picked up his jacket and placed his wand in the pocket. He wrapped his grey scarf around his neck ‘it’s chilly out tonight isn’t it?’
She nodded and picked up her tray and helped him to clear papers from his desk.
“Sure is, for summer” she nodded, she had left her coat at home because of the heat of the day.
‘Don’t worry about leaving work early. If anyone complains, they can bring it up with me.’ He opened a filing cabinet that seemed to be piled with clothes and grabbed a thick knit jumper. ‘I keep some spare clothes in case I work back-to back and you don’t look prepared for the weather’ he passed it to her with a smile.
She smiled and took it “Thanks, New York sure changes weather real quick”
‘Yeah, it sure does’ He gulped what was left of his coffee and smiled at Queenie. She managed to look pretty even in an old jumper.
She smiled at his thoughts and put the last of the files away for him.
‘You’re more helpful than most of the staff in this whole department’
She smiled “It ain’t a bother I dont mind too much”
He walked sluggishly around the room locking up all of the cabinets making sure that everything was left in perfect order.
She waited by the door smiling and turning the lights off with her wand since they were the last ones there.
‘I hope you’re ok? Working late shifts is always difficult’ he smiled and turned to her. ‘I hope you’re not working an early one tomorrow’
“7-9 so it aint too bad” she smiled and headed out, she locked the doors of macusa and turned around the corner, she suddenly zoned out a little bit and held onto the wall for support.
‘Are you ok?!’ Abernathy panicked, he grabbed her arm and slowly lowered her to the floor
She had gotten all breathless and pale and floppy
“Yeah.. Happens.. Alot.. shut up.. shhh..” she started humming trying to cover her ears and rocking
Abernathy thought ‘what can I do? I don’t know what to do??’ He offered her a bottle of water
She couldn’t get all the thoughts out of her head, she couldn’t stop herself from crying, it was overwhelming her too much
“Please just.. shh.. clear ya mind it hurts too much”
He tried to empty his mind but it was filled with pure fear. He didn’t know what was happening. He took one long breath and just tried to calm himself. He didn’t know what Queenie meant but he knew that it was the only way he could help.
She continued hyperventilating and shaking until she eventually passed out on the sidewalk.
He panicked for a moment looked around to check for no-maj’s and then calmly drew his wand ‘Rennervate’. He emptied his mind as she awoke.
She woke up, still panicking and out of breath
“Abernathy.. I.. I gotta lay.. down I cant.. just.. please” she was still crying uncontrollably.
‘Of course, just lie down. How close is your home from here? If necessary I will carry you home’
She was unable to speak, her head kept spinning and she kept dipping in and out of consciousness.
He decided to carry her, they were only a few blocks from his apartment. She was only light so he managed quite easily. He got her to his sofa and laid her down.
She sat there, still trembling but she seemed to have calmed down a little bit.
‘Are you ok? Would you like some cocoa?’ He asked passing her a blanket
She nodded with a sniffl and a hand to her head
His kitten curled up next to Queenie as Abernathy went to heat up some cocoa
She managed a small smile and smoothed the cat, she wiped her eyes and trembled “I’m sorry. It dont happen often.”
‘It’s ok, everyone gets overwhelmed sometimes’ he smiled gently as he handed her the hot cocoa
She sipped it, smiling and winced every now and then from the ringing in her head. She couldnt hear any thoughts and she didnt like it.
‘Tell me if there’s anything I can do’
She shook her head. “You’re wondering why this happened right?”
‘Yes, but I’m mostly wondering if you’re ok’ he sat next to her with a look of concern on his face
“I’ll be fine..” she sniffled again and took the jumper he had lent her off and handed it to him “Thanks.”
‘Keep it, as you said, New York’s weather is unpredictable’ he draped it over her shoulders
She gave a weak smile “I hits plenty of warm coats sir”
‘Would you like to escort you home? Once you feel better equipped to walk there’ he asked politely smiling
“You said yourself you’re drained, g-go to sleep and I’ll find my way” she said politely, although she couldn’t walk she was trembling so much.
‘No, tonight you are my priority and your safety and wellbeing is more important to me than sleep ever will be’ he said sternly
She smiled and looked around, it was her first time at his place.
“This is n-nice sir” she said through chattering teeth.
‘Not really, its just a place to go when I’m not working. The only reason I come home sometimes is to feed the cat’ he turned to pet the kitten that was sleeping in between him and Queenie
“You sure d-do work a lot” she looked at him curiously.
‘Yeah, I like to keep my mind occupied. Work is one of those things that keeps me busy. Plus when I was a kid I always wanted to be the President of MACUSA and I guess head of the wand permit department is the closest I’m going to get so I like to work my hardest at that’ he smiled at her
“Oh that’s sweet” she smiled smoothing the cat.
“I’d always wanted to be a teacher when I was younger”
‘If it means anything, I think you’d make an amazing teacher’
“You’re sweet but nah, I don’t got time to go to school for it” she sighed
“Plus teen and I need the money for our flat, if I just decided to go back to school it’d cost too much”
‘Fair enough’ he had never pondered the idea of changing career before, he shook it off, nothing is better than working at MACUSA he thought. ‘It’s getting late, maybe we should head to sleep? You can stay here until your shift tomorrow’ he started grabbing blankets and pillows from a cupboard in the other room
Queenie looked up and bit her lip
“I dont wanna be no trouble sir..” She tried to stand up but immediately felt dizzy and fell back down on the sofa.
‘Let me take you to your bed’ he held her by the arm and escorted her in to what was obviously his bedroom and sat her down on the bed. ‘I’ll see you in the morning, you’re welcome to any of my tshirts in my top drawer as night-clothes if you wish, the bathroom is just down the hall. I’ll be on the sofa if you need anything’ he smiled warmly at Queenie
She looked at him closely.
“I really dont mind Mr Abernathy, I couldn’t possibly take your bed”
‘You’re not taking it, I’m giving it to you. You’ve got to sleep well, you’ve got work tomorrow’ he smiled and left the room
She would have thanked him but she couldnt since she had fallen asleep almost immediately, she probably overslept too since she was supposed to start early.
‘Good morning’ he whispered ‘I’m going to head off to work now, when you head off just lock the front door, the key is on the table in the kitchen. When you get to work just give me the key ok?’ He stood there fully dressed and ready to go despite it still being dark outside ‘it’s ok if you need to sleep a bit more, I don’t mind if you get to work a little late’ he smiled
Queenie yawned and looked around rubbing her eyes
“What times it sir?”
‘4.50 Queenie’ he said smiling and seemiling full of energy ‘as I said, you can sleep for longer if you want’
“Shit!” Queenie jumped up suddenly awake although still feeling nauseous. “I was sposed to be in at 4”
‘Queenie, its 4.50 am’ he chuckled
“Oh..” she sat back up and put her hand to hear head. “Mr Abernathy sir, didn’t you get in at 12? And you didn’t sleep till at least 1am..”
'Yup' he said cheerfully 'I start work in about an hour so I need to be up if I like it or not'
"Can I get ya anything Mr Abernathy sir?" Queenie popped her head around the door of his office with a smile and a loose strand of hair falling in her face
Abernathy looked up from his work with a little shock, he thought he was alone in the office. He thought they’d all gone home for the night. She would have thanked him but she couldnt since she had fallen asleep almost immediately, she probably overslept too since she was supposed to start early.
‘Good morning’ he whispered ‘I’m going to head off to work now, when you head off just lock the front door, the key is on the table in the kitchen. When you get to work just give me the key ok?’ He stood there fully dressed and ready to go despite it still being dark outside 'it’s ok if you need to sleep a bit more, I don’t mind if you get to work a little late’ he smiled
Queenie yawned and looked around rubbing her eyes
“What times it sir?”
'4.50 Queenie' he said smiling and seemiling full of energy 'as I said, you can sleep for longer if you want'

“Plus teen and I need the money for our flat, if I just decided to go back to school it’d cost too much”
'Fair enough' he had never pondered the idea of changing career before, he shook it off, nothing is better than working at MACUSA he thought. 'It's getting late, maybe we should head to sleep? You can stay here until your shift tomorrow' he started grabbing blankets and pillows from a cupboard in the other room

'No, tonight you are my priority and your safety and wellbeing is more important to me than sleep ever will be' he said sternly
