VIII HEALING

Makoa Gibraltar had been a reckless teenager.

Of course there would be people defending this and telling of how it was typical for teenagers to act like that. But Makoa had been different.

He had loved his parents unconditionally. He'd never talked back to his teachers and his grades had been average. He'd never participated in purposeful bullying and he'd always stood up to his friends — even those whose names he hadn't yet learned.

There had been a boy whom he had loved. A dark-skinned beauty with yellow flowers often suit in his afro and with the clumsiest grin in the whole city. Whenever Makoa's parents had tried to talk of a girlfriend with him, pictures of this boy had spread in Makoa's mind. Unfortunately this boy had moved away shortly after.

Luckily Makoa's parents had understood him when he'd admitted to having preference to boys. He'd always loved and trusted them.

But there had been other aspects to him too that were never talked about today. He'd stolen from stores to feel alive; he'd broken windows to let out his frustration and cried until his fists had bled against the wall. Even though his parents had been loving and he'd always been grateful for them, there had been something inside telling him to make everything worse.

A couple of years later there had been another man Makoa had fallen for — Nikolas. They'd stayed together for a good two or three years and finally Makoa had decided to show off to his boyfriend. They'd stolen Makoa's father's motorcycle and gone for a ride. Nothing could've stopped them and ended their love — with Nikolas' arms steadily wrapped around Makoa's waist, Makoa felt unstoppable.

Until a car crashed into them.

No one died physically. But maybe Makoa died again inside just a little bit more.

Guilt had eaten him alive with every day passing by. Nikolas had left him for another man, and Makoa had never once questioned why.

When he'd got out of the hospital, Makoa had looked at himself in the mirror with swollen eyes. He'd impulsively grabbed a knife and cut his hair previously having reached his ass — now it had only reached to his shoulders after slicing it all off. He'd washed off the contours and highlights off his sharp features on his face. Makoa had stood there and decided, This needs to change.

I need to heal.
