I was working on messing with one of the military guys- purely for entertainment- when my powers just stopped working for a few seconds when we dropped into FTL. I think it’s a mix of different alien technologies.

"The Stargate creates an artificial worm hole using immense amounts of energy and with a heavy metal called Naquada, closely related to Naquarta.  At the SGC we use hundreds of super conductors to create the necessary power to initiate the reaction in the device that creates the portal. It would be easier with a DHD however the Germans and Russians would not grant us theirs and the one at Giza was taken by Ra. Now to go to another galaxy is nearly impossible. You need an immensely powerful energy source to even get to the next planet over, and reach the 8th chevron, as the average address has only 7; 6 and your point of origin. All gate addresses will have that point of ORigin. To get to Atlantis in the pegasis galaxy we use a Zero Point Module, or ZPM that was recovered by an SG1 team and in averted time line, however there are a few throught this galaxy. We do not always have to use Alpha site. We have a Beta sight on another planet, for a while the Russians had a Stargate for a while. To get the 9th Chevron, which led us to destiny we had to go to a planet which the perfect conditions to create a reaction in the core that would be strong enough to power the Stargate into reaching that 9th chevron. That is the most basic as I can make it." He said having dumbed it down quite a lot.
