Apparently after Mello died Near never had a hair cut again. I'm not saying I connected the dots but I connected something.

I do wonder if Near fell in to a massive depressive episode after Light was killed. Yeah he was gunned down and Kira was gone but so what?

He still had to be L. He still lost people he at the very least cared about or admired. He was still alone.

And now there was nothing to do but waste energy on what could have been. On failing to recognise and process grief like all too many who went to Wammy’s, desperately ignoring the horrible sunken feeling of being abandoned yet again. At least this time it was not through choice.

So why bother? He could sleep all day if he cared too. Rester would shove clothes at him daily and Halle would provide him with small cases to keep himself busy as he stared bleary eyed at his laptop screen until 4AM. Near wondered when he began to fear falling asleep.

He couldn’t go visit Mello or Matt. There were no graves. No goodbyes. Only bitterness, apathy and loneliness awaited him in his future.

- Matt didn’t receive much of anything when Mello left the Wammy’s house. A note left on a pillow saying ciao and nothing else for some reason. His clothes were gone. His possessions burned. Nothing else to indicate that Mello has been there at all

- And Matt moved on. As well as someone who’d lost their most important person without so much as a wave could move on. He grieved for his friendship and called Mello a fool aloud for trying to take on Kira, a stupid hardheaded fool who never learned to back down even if it was against a supernatural demon thing who could magically kill people

- Matt slipped back into his other friendships. Branched out. Kept making weird jokes. Moved on. A letter showed up. He moved on. Another letter. Ignored, moved on. A dozen letters. A phone call. Ten phone calls. One weird Facebook message from a clearly fake profile.

- And Matt had moved on. Content in his own little life where he could indulge himself in his worldly pleasures. He changed his number. Changed his phone entirely actually, burnt the letters. Deleted his own fake Facebook account.

- He wasn’t worth a goodbye. He wouldn’t answer with hello.

- He wasn’t sure what to expect answering the door at 3AM. It sure wasn’t a mildly out of breath bedraggled Mello, hunched over and sporting a whole new leather based look. He wasn’t expecting the hand to reach out to the hem of his shirt and grasp it tightly. He wasn’t expecting the now deeper voice to rasp out ‘Please Matt I need your help with Kira.’

- He wasn’t expecting himself to say okay

“I didn’t understand a word of that.”

“Are you stupid or do you not speak ____?”

“How do you say ____?”

“What are they talking about over there?”

“Was that a curse?”

“I didn’t understand a word of that, but it sounded bad.”

“Why are you smiling? What did you/they just say?”

“Don’t try to trick me into insulting people again. I’ve still got a bruise from last time.”

“Why is your language so hard?”

“You have no idea what I’m saying, do you?”

“Speaking slower doesn’t help when I don’t understand the words coming from your lips.”

“I know enough of your language to not starve. That’s it.”

“Will you help me translate this?”

“They’re laughing. That can’t be good.”

“Hey, I know that word!”

“You said my name. Are you talking about me behind my back again?”

“I just called you something stupid, didn’t I?”

“Are you trying to get someone to punch you?”

“Put your hands down before you get us in trouble.”

“That gesture doesn’t mean what you think it does.”

“Your manners are atrocious.”

“I can’t tell if you’re rude or just ignorant.”

“Only a three-year old would talk like that.”

“Where did you learn to speak ___? In a gutter? You sound like a hooligan.”

“If you spoke any more formally, I might mistake you for royalty. You need to learn some slang.”

“No one says things that way anymore.”

“Just close your mouth. It’s safer.”

“I’ll translate for you.”

“I’m sorry, I’m a bit rusty.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll teach you.”

“I love sharing my language with people.”

“Keep practicing. You’ll get it eventually.”
