Alright, I guess I’ve gotten enough questions about them to spill the beans on the Painting Ghosts.
The Painting Ghosts were sort of my one chance to squeeze in a few cheeky parody references (as those of you who follow my other videos knows I’m not shy about doing). More than that though, each painting actually represents a different video I’m associated with.
Here you can see the super prototypey versions of the Portrait Ghosts as they appeared in the animatic.
After those really blunt sketches, I fleshed them out more in preparation for animation, though even these more complex sketches still weren’t smoothed out to fit the overall style of the rest of the characters.
Blake, our 3rd animator was in charge of vectoring and animating the Painting Ghosts. He took my original concept sketches and fleshed them out to better fit my overall style of the other characters.

Most of you picked up on the gag here. He’s a combination of both Phoenix Wright and Edgeworth (which makes purple! ‘3’), with a bit of a vampirey makeover on top of that. He’s a reference to my Money video, the other Mystery Skulls Animated video I did (In addition to my Boot to the Head animation waaay back in the day).
A pretty obvious reference to the “Ring Side” game in Rhythm Heaven: Fever. The Rhythm Heaven series was a huge influence on how Ghost animated, hence why there’s so much friggin’ head bobbing all over the place. Not to mention it’s an homage to all the MLP x Rhythm Heaven videos I did before this (particularly REMIX: Apple x3).
FUN FACT: Luis (Of the Mystery Skulls) is a huge Wrestling fan, so that was all the more reason to pick the Wrestler and not, say, Karate Joe or Munchy Monk.
Yup, that’s a Rarity alright. I couldn’t not sneak at least ONE allusion to pony stuff here, what with my previous track record with pony video stuff (Double Rainboom, Epic Rage Time, the DJ Ponys, etc, etc.) Though just to spice things up, I mixed in a little bit of Disney’s Haunted Mansion Extendo-Paintings with what she’s wearing, because… well, I think you can guess why.
The Priest from the Live version of the Ghost video. It only seemed proper to get a reference of that in this video in some form. Though if you look at the animatic shots, you’ll see the Priest is not there, with a Wizard in his place. This is because the Live version of Ghost didn’t exist yet by the time I sketched this part out. Instead, the Wizard painting was going to represent my earliest successful animation, 8-BIT Dungeons and Dragons.
As for the Back Up/Beat Ghosts, I posted their concept art earlier, but here’s a screenshot from an earlier version of the video, in which they didn’t receive their more appropriate purple coating yet, something that actually didn’t happen until late into production.
Oh, PS, the back two painting ghosts are just shadowy whatevers because oh man animating 4 unique characters for one scene, in addition to the main 3, is a BIT MUCH SO I GOT LAZY :V
