Since I haven’t updated with art asks in a few days (I’m sorry you guys, I promise I didn’t just forget) I think it’s about time I come up with some backstory for this au.
Amethyst emerged from a gem incubator back on Homeworld itself. But, seeing that she was overcooked, she was poofed and disposed into a pile of gems marked for breaking due to defections. Our Pearl was one of many Pearls assigned to deal with dirty and sad tasks such as this.
Unexpectedly, as Pearl was about to initiate the crushing process on the next batch of gems, Amethyst reformed. Pearl had never seen a gem reform before, especially a “damaged” one. She was mesmerized, the beautiful glowing, soft landing, then Amethyst’s eyes, full of confusion and lack of any knowledge of what was happening broke something inside of Pearl.
She quickly whispered “I’m sorry” and electrocuted Amethyst into a cloud with a destabilizer rod. (Like the one Jasper had). She ran, holding the gem close to her chest. Full of a rage that had long been brewing, she drew her weapon for the first time, blindly attacking any pursuers with an agility she didn’t even know she possessed. Through all the commotion, she hardly noticed when a gem with pink ringlets of hair and a flowing white dress landed on the center of the main grounds’ square.
This gem carried herself with purpose, her very aura commanded attention.
Pearl’s head was ringing, but she and her remaining pursuers stopped and looked towards the pink gem. The powerful goddess turned her head towards Pearl’s direction, and their eyes met.
“Pearl, come with me,” she said. Her voice was genuine and sure, smooth. She extended her hand, and a flower of hope bloomed in Pearl’s heart. She just ran. She ran like her life depended on it, which it did. She clutched the innocent gem she held like she wanted to meld it to her body, and reached for Rose’s outstretched hand.
As soon as their hands connected, Rose leapt into the air, holding Pearl’s arm. Her mind still spinning, she finally got a look at the gem who mysteriously came to her and her precious Amethyst’s rescue. The wind blew through their hair, and Rose looked down and smiled.
“We’ve been waiting for you two,”
“H-How…” Pearl stuttered. She felt energy still coursing through her. She unconsciously looked down at the Amethyst in the nook of her arm and started crying. Just straight up bawling.
“You feel free, that’s what it’s called,” Rose cooed, as if she knew what Pearl was thinking.
“F-…Free..? I’m free?” Pearl choked, her tears streaking across her cheeks and turning to ice in the wind. Rose smiled, and Pearl noticed they were floating above a place she didn’t recognize. They slowly descended over abandoned structures, pink diamonds adorning the crumbling ruins.
A small blue gem came in to view, simply standing in the wall-less skeleton of a demolished structure. As Rose’s feet delicately touch the ground, the little gem smiles, like she has been expecting Rose to return with new companions.
“Hello, Rose. I see things went as I foresaw they would.” Her voice was gentle and monotone, but not necessarily cold. Rose nodded and turned to Pearl, standing to her left and shaking like a leaf.
“Pearl, this is Sapphire. She foresaw the moment you would rebel, and knew you and Amethyst were meant to be a part of our team,”
“Yes! We are the Crystal Gems, and we are going to fight for freedom.”
The Sapphire smiled and nodded, hands folded neatly in front of her.
“We… we are the Crystal Gems,” Pearl said, her voice stabilizing.
