the vampire lestat’s writer’s room needed a freak in it to dial everything up by 200% because that was just one of the limpest episodes of television that I watched. you’re adapting the vampire chronicles by anne rice. why’re you afraid of being transgressive and allowing characters to be truly selfish and cruel. what happened to letting them pursue their desires to a fault when they’re not faced with tangible consequences for their choices

hm well it’s uninteresting. it doesn’t make effective usage of its runtime. the cinematography is poor. the costumes and settings look cheap. it isn’t kind to people who haven’t read the books - it makes no attempt to clarify the references it’s making and hinges emotional beats on prior knowledge of anne’s work. it doesn’t let viewers sit with the weight of lestat’s history before ripping them away into duller plot material in the present timeline. it fails to build any tension and withhold it for satisfying payoffs. I’m confused about the messaging it’s trying to convey in certain scenes which isn’t an issue I’ve ever faced with iwtv before - I can’t comprehend what is being implied in some places, particularly the scene at the strip club which was executed very strangely. the dialogue is choppy and doesn’t follow logical pathways. there were several wasteful scenes. scenes aren’t being optimised to prioritise more central and beloved characters. the ones that do just don’t go anywhere. the episode (and the one that preceded it) makes less interesting and confronting commentary, re: class, gender, sexuality etc than even anne did in 1985 which was never the case for the show in s1 & s2. the racial commentary has been sparse and I’m not sure it can be explained away by virtue of being filtered through lestat’s point of view. I’m very put off by the material I’m witnessing for gabi/lestat. these are the issues I have with it presently. some of them may be fixed. some of them will not. you can’t adapt a book as dense and rich as tvl in 7 episodes when you throw away half the run time for the lacklustre material of the present timeline
