We dont.. hand out pokemon? I dont think professors hand out pokemon on demand either.

Pokemon Rangers patrol the wilderness and cities to moniter and protect nature and deal with problem caused by pokemon, usually wild ones.

If you have a situation that requires a pokemon to solve it, you should contact your local gym leader or ranger base, and they will likely use thier own pokemon to solve it. (Or in a ranger's case, catch a pokemon from the wild with our loops of friendship, deal with the problem, then release all pokemon involved back to the wild)

Going to break character for a second: your lore about how fossile pokemon can become invasion if released into the wild is nwo canon! read the Omanyte sword pokedex entry.

Gunna break character too to say I am delighted that my worldbuilding made canon! It initially was to figure out why fossil pokemon live wild in the Ranger Regions. Off-hand I know you can find wild Aerodactyl in Fiore, Cranidos in Almia, and Kabutops in Oblivia. I pulled from the HC from other pokemon artists as well.

From @shinonart I pulled some of the idea that revived fossil pokemon stuggle with modern times. There are a few other nuzlocke artists who have covered fossil pokemon.

So trainers arent really good at dealing with them and adjusting them to the modern world. Leading to something that happens in the real world where pet woners might get an exotic pet, like a reptile or something and then just release it “to the wild” when they give up, not recognizing that the pet isnt suited to the area. You see it in Florida with the Tegu and any snakes.

that catch with fossil pokemon is that modern pokemon have more cooperative an social demeanors than the Fossil pokemon do, and well... when you have a carnivorous pokemon they see others as prey, including humans.

I dont talk about invasive pokemon much tbh. but I wouldnt be surprised if there are problems with corphish and fish pokemon that fishermen decided to stock into a river that the pokemon isnt native local to, messing up that waterway’s ecosystem. or some well meaning person thinking to balance out an ecosystem by introducing something else. And irresponsible breeders.

but still, whoo. invasive pokemon isnt a thing I thought nintendo would ever talk about since it breaks away from the “everything is fine an happy aside from the Big Bad of Current Mainstream Game ” thing they try to overlay the pokemon world in. I dont think they will ever cover the idea that pokemon will eat other pokemon, or people eat pokemon again. Not like in the first two gens.

Hi! Fellow Ranger here. I'm currently in the process of setting up a Ranger network for the Galar region's Wild Area and I was wondering what kind of structures you'd recommend for attracting nearby Pokémon? Just so we can have some close at hand to partner up with when we need 'em. So far I've built a nesting tree for the local bird Pokémon and started work on a bug/grass type garden but I know there's gotta be other stuff I can set up. Thanks for the help! Hello! I admittedly have very little knowledge of Galar or its Wild Area, but Im a little concerned about your actions. A wild area, by its very name, is meant to be untouched as much as possible. Surely in your training as a Ranger, you were told again and again how much of Ranger work revolves around preserving the area in it natural state as much as possible, unless for the safety of pokemon and people? These things, while they seem ok, likely are going to do more harm than good. I can only assume these were being authorized due to some agreement the local Ranger branch has with the Galarian government I can very much sympathize with not having pokemon nearby when you need them. We have all been there, but we all have to adapt and go searching for what we need. Its nice to think of the posibilities, but the risks outweigh the benifits.

1. Wild pokemon will learn that buildings and gardens provide a ready supply of food, and will wander into cities or harass humans to obtain what they have learned these structures provide. A large pokemon who learns they can eat from the garden will go to other gardens. A Pokemon who expects these things to be provided has a good chance of getting violent if the spot doesnt continue to provide, and overall pokemon will leave thier wild habitat and leave voids in the ecosystem that normally isnt effected by, say, a trainer catching one or two pokemon. Many pokemon species are social, so youd be looking at a group of pokemon relocating.

2. Pokemon Lures, like honey in Sinnoh, are often easy for trainers to spot, and since these structures are permanent, it would be fairly easy for a Trainer to camp out nearby and nab pokemon without much effort, thus also depriving you of these hypothetical helpers, and open up a possibility of poaching. There is also the high chance that other trainers might see this and decide to make thier own. This makes habitat and population monitering much harder, and again, poachers will capitalize on these structures. And they can all say they thought it was ok sice they saw them out in the wild area with nothing to say others couldt build thier own.

3. Structures like you mentioned are generally only authroized for Rangers to use by research groups or in population rebuilding efforts. I havent heard of any pokemon species populations in desperate need of homes or having a food scarcity, so this is still very much out of the norm.

4. Generally structures built for Ranger use comprise only of Waystations for Rangers to shelter in, Small sheltered spots to recharge your styler and take care of things and communications that your styler cant handle by itself or that has more first aid supplies or tools than you might be able to carry, or a solid permanent base. None of these ever have things to attract pokemon, and at most they have places for a partner pokemon to shelter with you, or a place for a pokemon you are tasked to help rest while you give it some first aid.

I wish you the best over in Galar, but I recommend you build nothing more.

We had a conversation over on the Ranger Discord about Fiore badges, and after digging around on Bulbapedia (and by that I mean just changing the character pages to French) I found these references for the leader’s badges!

I had to manually adjust the saturation myself since these are scans from the game manual, but the colour of the outer ring basically matches the interior colour of the base. The badge also always points in the general direction of the base; this means that rangers in Ringtown and Fall City will have one badge pointing forwards and the other pointing back.

Hi Kara, what region are you in? Do you have any advice for a newbie hiker (I'm a trainer in Unova) planning to go hike a trail in a forest or other area where there could be ticks? Do I need to have one of my Pokemon out with me to protect me from the wild ones? Is there a way I can be safe without bothering the wild Pokemon?

Hi! I am in Fiore, one of the Ranger Regions. Ranger Regions require a lot of paperwork for trainers to visit, as they have to agree that they will not attack or battle wild pokemon. Any pokemon they bring are companions only, and we limit the number of pokemon a trainer ca bring. The usual limit is 3 pokemon, but often its just one.

You should make plans ahead of time to get the paperwork done, but all visitor centers at the docks will have a place you can fill out the paperwork and send pokemon back to the storage system.

You can visit any Ranger Base or visitor center to get feedback on what type of hiking trails there are, what thier recommendations are, and so forth. Rangers also make thier own tick repellent, and you can pick some up at the Ranger base or one of thier little shops. As for keeping safe? Most trails are safe so long as you stay on the marked path and dont agitate the wild pokemon. This isnt a Trainer Land where wild pokemon will pop out to battle you. They mainly want to be left alone to do thier thing. If you are still nervous, there is usually a Ranger or two who will be happy to tag along on your hike or let you join them on a patrol! I generally recommend asking, as we Rangers will happily point out wild pokemon, tracks, vegetation, and anything else we find interesting, so you would be getting a lot of fun info while on your hike

Researchers and Off Limits Areas

The Ranger Regions have often been described as one big park or nature reserve. This is usually in regards to how many people strive to keep the forests and wilderness as wild and natural as they can be, and many wild pokemon react different then they would in the trainer lands. After all, the Trainer Lands are a bit more developed, even in wilderness, so that young trainers can safely wander. There are many paths and wild pokemon gradually get used to seeing humans.

Many researchers tend to flock to Ranger lands to research pokemon, under the opinion that mot pokemon in the trainer lands are all a bit “tame” due to this.

But that is where Ranger jobs come in. If you arent serving your community or doing patrols, you might be assigned for a week or so to a researcher who wants to go researching pokemon.

Your job would be to ensure they dont get hurt, can safely get to where they want to set up thier research stuff, and keep them safe as they inevitably do something reckless in the pursuit of data. Keep the aggressive pokemon from getting them hurt, keep the researcher safe. Its almost like the occasional times a school will have a camping event, but this time you arent in premade campgrounds.

That said, there are areas even most Researchers arent allowed to go, which are only available to specialist in that type of environment and the Ranger who excels in that area. Im talking icy areas, cave systems and other such dangerous areas. A researcher would need special permits and would need to arrive with an approved Specialist and get assigned thier specialist Ranger before they would be allowed there. As for non specialists? Well... we gate the forbidden areas off pretty well. Gates vary depending on the section of the tunnel. Big gates closer to the entrance of the cave, looser ones in the deeper parts so someone adventurous would have a few more thoughts. We have a live trail cam that is motion activated, so we can see if humans went into the forbidden areas, and keep an eye on the wild pokemon population.

Unfortunately, Closed off areas get some big rumors. My husband, Garret, was all too aware the ones of a legendary hidden deep in the caves. The problem would have been that if there is a legendary, it would be fairly deep on the off limits area, where the rocky ground becomes slippery, passages narrow, and you could drop unexpectedly ino an underground river and drown before the river ever reaches the air. Every year we lose around 5 people to the deep areas of the Koroka tunnel, despite warnings, the cameras, and signs. Usually tourists who are visiting the Trainer Lands for the thrill of the wilderness.

Civilians. Trainers. Researchers. In your travels, you may find an area that is roped off or otherwise off limits. Please understand that the barricades are there for your safety, and do not try to get past them.

This Blog uses the Pokemon Ranger games as it’s official lore, and regards the Trainer Class Rangers as a type of Ranger who can only capture pokemon temporarily, much like a Ranger Region (Fiore, Almia, and Oblivia) ranger would. The pokeballs are used because thats how Trainer regions regard ownership, and prevents against unscrupulous trainers from capturing a pokemon the Ranger is currently getting the aid from.

Hi Miss Kara, I have a question. I live in Sinnoh, and I live in the same town as a ranger. What is your opinion for a good first Pokemon for a Pokemon Ranger ?

Hello! Pokemon Rangers dont choose thier first pokemon, even when we have teams and live in a Trainer Land like Sinnoh or Hoenn. We use our capture stylers to befriend pokemon for tasks, and then release them. Sometimes we use a temporary registration pokeball to capture local pokemon if the pokemon dessires to travel and train for a bit, but Rangers never keep the pokemon they capture for any longer than a month.

The only exception would be a partner pokemon, who decides to stay with you even after you release it. You dot get to choose your partner. It will just be a pokemon who takes a big shine to you.

I live in Kalos currently and I was wondering what is a good Pokemon team for Pokemon rangers? I'm asking because I'm thinking about becoming one and want to prepare early.

Hello! You seem to be referring to a pokemon team like a trainer would have. Thats becase most Rangers in trainer lands adapt to using pokeballs that have a temp registry of the pokemon within, because pokemon in your lands expect wandering humans to engage in battle and will present themselves to a trainer in hops of a match or joining the trainer so they can get stronger.

In Ranger lands, ou only have one pokemon, and thats your parther! Your partner is a pokemon you have bonded deeply with to the point they decide on thier own that they want to join you and help you out. you can have more than one partner, but you can only have ONE partner with you at a time, so you can better do your job without spending too much time divinding your care among many pokemon with you.

From what Ive gathered talking to the overseas Rangers in Trainer Lands, you dont choose your team. You go through yor training to use a styler, get the wilderness survival training and such, and you will eveltally befriend a partner along your journey, maybe. Until then, the “team” youd be using are pokemon local to the area who you have caught because you need thier aid in somethig, or who chose to follow you around for a bit to get stronger before going home.

Remember! A key thing about Pokemon Rangers is you dont get to keep the pokemon you catch! When you dont need thier help, or you start getting too far from thier native habitat, you release them and let them go home to live back in the wild.

That said... pokemon who make a good team and to have on hand change depending on where you are going to be working. I like having bug types, flying types, and a pokemon that can cut or has a vine ability useful.

Bug, psychic, and water pokemon all have abilities that can slow down pokemon you are trying to calm or capture so you dont damage your capture line,a nd bug types also have the bonus of string shot, which can be a makeshift glue, a rope, or help with a cast, and many also fly, which makes them good for scouting around. These are sometimes different tat the moves you’d see trainers using. We call them Field moves and Pokemon Assists, which are abilities the pokemon might use just every day normal, only used to help you with yoru task! Depending on what base and method you are taught, you might not get to keep yoru captured pokemon beyond getting thier help once or twice. Or you might be able to keep them longer. IT reccomended that pokemon are only called to help for as long as they are needed, given a health check when they are done and a few berries as a reward, and then you release them so they can go home.

Hi Miss Kara, I have a question. I live in Unova, and I live in the same town as a ranger. They're really kind and stuff, but always....tired. Even with the new ranger that got transferred here, they're still tired a lot. Is there anything I can do to help?

Hi! If there are no other Ranger bases nearby, then chances are your Ranger friend was likely patroling the area by themselves. Its pretty common, as many trainer lands are large and we are only starting to spread. Im glad the new ranger is around to help out. The reason they may still look tired is because they are training the newcomer and ensuring the newbie knows what to look for and familiarizing them with the area. Then maybe they will take turns on patrols and your buddy can get some rest. If you’d like to help out, well a lot of us dont get much chance to cook a proper meal, or come back home too tired to do much. so you could bring a gift basket or see if they would like some meals brought to them. Rangers also like portable food. Usually its sandwiches, but if you have something like hand pies filled with stew, or some soup, they might appreciate that as well.

I cant think of anything else besides actually volunteering to help with whatever they are doing.

You could also just talk to them and ask whats up? Might deny being tired, but thats cause we are so used to putting on a “ranger can do anything thats needed” face that we might not admit we are tired. But im sure they’d appreciate it.
