After watching this episode, DO NOT tell me that Riza doesn’t love Roy. Please don’t even freaking try. And please don’t even dare tell me that they’re not canon.

I mean. Look at her.

This was the ONE and ONLY TIME Riza cried in the entire FMA:B series. Except for the Rain Opening theme, but that’s not exactly counted. LOL.

well the only time Roy cried in the whole anime was when Hughes died, and the only time Ed cried was when he’d lost Alphonse so i guess Hughes/Roy and Elricest are canon too? and Ling cried when Fu was killed. Ling/Fu, anyone?

i’m sorry but a character crying over another character doesn’t make that ship canon

i’m just tired of seeing royai posts in the tag which shove its “canon-ness” down everyone’s throats with pieces of evidence which don’t make sense

I don’t know why I feel the need to comment on this (maybe because I’m putting off my homework haha) but here goes. The above user is correct in saying that crying isn’t what makes a ship to be considered “canon”. When Arakawa makes her characters cry is a big deal. She doesn’t do it to show romantic evidence or without reason. Most frequently we see the characters in FMA crying over loss. The first example being the most obvious is when Ed preforms human transmutation.

He’s crying because he just lost his brother. His best friend. His life. His everything. It was bad enough that their mother was gone—all they had left was each other. And then the same thing happens at the end of the series as well. It’s the only time we see Ed crying as an adult because, again, he lost Al.

And there are plenty of other examples too throughout the course of the series. Gracia, Elysia and of course, Roy, all cry over the death of Hughes. Winry cries after facing Scar because of the loss of her parents. Ling and Lan Fan both cry over Fu’s death. Even Maria Ross is seen crying when heading off to Xing because of the loss of the life she once had. There are many other occasions too.

As for Riza here, she isn’t crying because she’s in love with Roy or something like that. She’s crying because she’s lost Roy. And it’s not just Roy that she’s losing either—it’s their entire dream. She wants to see Roy succeed in his goal to reach the top of the military and restore democracy. She wants to be able to, in some way, atone for what she’s done in Ishval—even if it can’t be done fully. She entrusted Roy with the secrets of flame alchemy on her back, in hopes that he would use it for good—only for him to use that power to kill thousands of innocent people. And just when they’re in the middle of their work, everything seems to come to a screeching halt now that Roy’s dead. Riza put all of her faith, trust and everything that she had in Roy. She isn’t crying because she loves Roy and now he’s dead, she’s crying because everything she believed in is gone.
