It’s been a while

The possibility that this man could have been part of his living past spooked him. And he couldn’t dare bring upon whatever pain his passing had brought once again. But it was too late.

He completely missed the inspector’s attempt to calm him down. Instead, the child closed his eyes and slid down to the ground. He found himself aware of the rapid beating in his ears and instantly, his eyes snapped open and he jerked back.

What was that noise? Why didn’t it seem to stop? It was foreign. Unnatural. Unwelcome in the murmuring world he had become accustomed to the past few years. His eyes darted around, trying to see what was making the noise, although never actually registering the imaged he saw.

A wave of nausea hit him and he had to close his eyes again. Focusing on the strange beating noise helped him ignore the urge to vomit.

Only then did he realize that the source of the noise was his own heart, and internally, he laughed. He really was alive.

It wasn’t a lie.

Art’s brows scrunched up in concern as he watched the boy closely. Was he having a panic attack? All he knew for sure was his efforts to sooth him and bring any calmness to this situation were all in vain. In fact, he feared he might have made matters worse.

Still he had to do something. He couldn’t leave the distressed and heart achingly familiar child all alone.

“My name is Art. I’m a superintendent, meaning my job is to help people.” He kept his voice soft and even as he spoke. “Allow me to help you.” He extend his slim hand towards the child, hoping he would catch his attention.

Maybe the inspector was worrying too much and the boy was just very frightened by him but he doubted it. It seemed like something else was going on but to what that was, Art had no answer.

Skill smiled back. “Thanks.” At the very least, Art was willing to eat just this once. “Do you know where to?”

To be honest, Skill actually didn’t know many parts of Yokohama. He knew about the more well-known places– like Landmark Tower, but if you needed a local tour guide, Skill would have suggested you to find someone else. He only knew what he needed to know, like what trains to take to go to school and where his favorite bakery was.

Back on track… “But if it’s post-lunch dessert, leave it to me! I found a really place the other day. It’s called Spot– ever hear of it?”

While Art was musing on where to go, all that really popped into mind was quaint cafes and sweet shops, Skill make a suggestion before he could voice any of his. Not that it really bothered him. He was happy to go where ever his brother wanted to. He liked treating his brother out but sadly work preoccupied a lot of his time and he didn’t get to do it as often as he would like to.

“I have heard of it but I’ve never been there.” Art answered, post-lunch dessert sounded great to him right now. “Shall we head there now?”
