Alice stands her ground when faced with Death. No. She is not ready to go. She has unfinished business, and spirits with unfinished business are the worst kind, as far as Rio is concerned. It doesn’t help that Alice is particularly stubborn. Even when Rio tries calling upon her other deceased covenmates in the hope that their words will resonate with her more, it only seemed to make Alice more angry on her late friends’ behalf.
Death doesn’t have time for this. Not when Agatha is prancing around with the Scarlet Witch’s crime against nature and getting more and more attached by the minute. Luckily, the road being a limbo space with weak consistency due to her nature grants her a bit of wiggle room. Bend the rules as she may, a balance must be kept. If Alice or the others want to return to the land of the living, then someone must take her place. Things on the road are about to get a whole lot more complicated.

Welcome to this sort-of-kind-of ghost au . The witches road has murky rules as a dimension subconsciously made by a teenager, which allows Rio to grant Alice the tiniest sliver of hope for coming back. If she wants to return to the land of the living, then she’s got to lure someone to essentially kill someone. She doesn’t expect her to fulfill this task, but it’s better than arguing with an angry ghost for eons.
Sharon and Lilia don’t want to come back, but they were summoned to try and ease Alice across to the other side. This failed miserably. But neither can leave Alice to fester and do this alone, so they elect to stay alongside her. This is mostly to their detriment, as they are not able to dead nor alive. No, instead, Rio returns them to their bodies in an undead state, sustaining wounds and appearance changes (also contributed to by the road).
So, now there is a “spirit” waiting in each trial [the road worked it into the framework of the ‘ spirit as our guide’ part] and are essentially a part of the road until this is over.
Sharon is largely oblivious to the larger implications of this. She gardens and helps people who pass through the first trial where she can, and directs them towards Alice at the second trial, who doesn’t want Sharon involved in any murder.
Lilia is at the third trial and is ideally meant to block the path out if travelers are being pursued by Alice. In reality, she’s not mentally present half the time, and she often lets travelers past her when she can. She is hoping she can help Alice calm down and accept dying before anyone else is killed. It’s not going so well. Her timeline was not meant to be stretched out like this, and flashes between being alive and (un)dead are less than pleasant, to say the least. But she refuses to leave Alice.
Rio periodically checks in on them, unable to put them completely to the back of her mind. It’s complicated. She becomes increasingly worried for Lilia over the course of the au and secretly wonders if Billy will so,e how get word of this since people are actively summoning the door and coming out the other end having seen his coven mates. The reaper may have let Billy go, but she still wants him dead, and that’s not even to mention that wherever Billy goes, Agatha follows. There’s… still a lot of unpacked baggage there.
