Jacob Blake’s sister: ‘I’m not sad. I’m not sorry. I’m angry. And I’m tired. I haven’t cried one time. I stopped crying years ago. I am numb. I have been watching police murder people that look like me for years.’
Required watching.
[I am my brother’s keeper, and when you say the name Jacob Blake, make sure you say “father,” make sure you say “cousin,” make sure you say “son,” make sure you say “uncle,” but most importantly, make sure you say “human.” Human life. Let it marinate–in your mouth, in your mind. A human life, just like every single one of y’all… We’re human. His life matters. So many people have reached out to me telling me they’re sorry that this happened to my family. Well don’t be sorry, because this has been happening to my family for a long time. Longer than I can account for. It happened to Emmett Till. Emmett Till is my family. Philando. Mike Brown. Sandra. This has been happening to my family. And I’ve shed tears for every single one that it’s happened to. This is nothing new. I’m not sad. I’m not sorry. I’m angry. And I’m tired. I haven’t cried one time. I stopped crying years ago. I am numb. I have been watching police murder people that look like me for years. I’m also a Black history minor. So, not only have I been watching it in the thirty years I’ve been on this planet, but I’ve been watching it for years before we were even alive. I’m not sad. I don’t want your pity. I want change.]
i feel helpless. my cousin has od'd three times this month and it feels like it's just, waiting for the time nobody finds him. i remember when he was nothing but a boring 13yo. where did it all go wrong?
man do i not have answers here. it matters that he keeps being found. these OD deaths that happen, in Brookings talk, are deaths of despair. Like, really. They are the product of systemic choices, no matter how individual they look up close.
I submit to you that where it all went wrong is actually truly honestly big picture shit. Rich people getting richer. Awful incentives. Community and government fucking gone from problem solving.
I’m sorry you have to watch this with your cousin and I hope your cousin survives. But I think real people made real choices that made this situation more likely, and what I know is a lot less of the moral burden of this falls on your cousin or on your family than we used to believe when people struggled like this.
I’m sorry.
We all should be.
TALLAHASSEE, FL—Staring down in shock and turning pale, the host of Wednesday night’s $700 million Powerball lottery reportedly muttered to herself in utter horror after the randomized drawing produced an entirely unmarked, pitch-black ball. “32, 16—Oh, dear God…. No, no, no,” said Powerball host Laura Johnson, who trembled visibly as the black and otherwise featureless ball came to a rest at the end of the machine’s display tube. “How could this happen? Oh Christ, not yet! Please, not yet! Jesus, they said we’d have more time. They said we’d … oh no, no—” At press time, viewers of the drawing reported seeing the studio lights flicker followed by an unearthly scream just as the televised feed cut to static.
This might be the greatest Twin Peaks reference ever... unless I've just been watching way too much Twin Peaks.

In the Polish village of Zalipie, all the buildings are covered in painted flowers. Over 100 years ago, when everyone had wood-burning stoves, someone painted a flower on their ceiling to cover a soot stain, and it became a trend. In 1948, the town started an annual painted cottage competition to help recover psychologically from WWII, and now all the homes, churches, bridges and barns are covered in flowers – inside and out. We went to the Women’s March on Washington to ask our fellow marchers what they had to say to Donald Trump and what brought them into the streets today. Over the next couple of days we’ll be posting some of their stories. Here’s one woman who’s a first generation American who says she feels devastated to think that her parents would not be welcomed into our country today.
And now, museums are collecting their favorite women’s march signs from this historic moment.
