open letter to dorites: capitalism y/n?

First, I’d like to openly thank this question’s submitter! My composition final last semester was a twelve-page thesis on conflict theory. I think it bored my professor to death; she was a poet-type who encouraged us to do creative writing. But she left the project open to literary criticism and formal essays, which I greatly appreciated; I’ll do creative assignments, but I very rarely enjoy them. My only problem with research papers is that I get completely absorbed! They’re fun for me. I didn’t play a single mafia game between the assignment of the thesis and its deadline.

Anyway, capitalism! Let me begin by stating that a universally-perfect political system does not exist. A society’s history, culture, size, and even geography must be considered when evaluating the effectiveness of a pertinent system of government, and those factors can change! "capitalism y/n” is like asking “cayenne pepper y/n.” Absolutely yes to cayenne pepper in a creamy potato soup, but only in moderation, and I wouldn’t put it in a birthday cake at all. (Unless it’s dark chocolate).

So that’s the answer to your question; I wouldn’t say yes or no. Generally, yes, I’m pro-capitalism. But I’m also pro-socialism. They aren’t mutually exclusive, as effectiveness is entirely dependent on outside specifics.

Like many political systems, capitalism can be greatly beneficial but only if the government and society are mindful of its dangers and able to create solutions to the problems that will inevitably arise if it’s in place long enough. Capitalism is driven primarily by competition, which can be great! Conflict is eye-opening; it motivates and strengthens. But it tends to encourage an unhealthy “bigger-better-newer-more” mindset in society and creates three needs: a need for continual profit, a need for a steady flow of resources, and a need to minimize labor costs. For capitalism to function in a sustainable manner, all of these must be addressed in manners tailored to the society’s own specific needs. As a general rule, cooperation is key and it must be systematically explored and encouraged alongside competition. But now we’re getting into business ethics. This is already much longer than a y or n and we have other questions to answer. I’d best publish this now or I’ll be here all day.
