He stopped once he got to the bottom of the stairs. Kurogane turned around and looked at Fai. His eyes moved up and down his body. “You can fly…yeah?”

Fai stumbled back a bit as he stopped and nodded. “Yes. It’s my fault you are running late now anyways. I should take responsibility and get you there on time if not early.” He told him. “Um but…I shouldn’t transform here, right?”

His mind ran through the past week’s memories, but nothing came up. Kurogane rubbed his temple with his thumb, and groaned quietly. He suddenly remembered a cold night, a few too many drinks, and someone sitting next to him… “Oh, I get it. This is a dream, right? Alright, I’d better wake up soon. I’m going to be late for work…”

“Wake up?” Fai tilted his head and snapped his fingers. “Ah!” He transformed back into a dragon and roared at him. “WAKE UP!” He roared out and then transformed back into more human like. “Is that better? Are you awake now?”

“Yes. Yes, I am. And now I’m only…” Kurogane stood perfectly still as he slowly raised his arm to check his watch. “…Three minutes behind schedule. Sorry. I need to get going. Now. I’m going to miss my train.”

“Oh! You don’t need that archaic machine anymore. You have me!” Fai beamed. “I can fly after all.” He bragged, turning around and kneeling so that Kurogane could get on his back. “I will transform when I get higher in the air.”

Kurogane stared at him. He reached down to grab his briefcase and quickly shuffled past the weirdo in front of him. He didn’t have time to mount some foreign stranger dressed as butler. Maybe he met him before, but nothing was clicking. Even if he had, the guy was acting like a pervert now. No need to get involved with someone like that.

“W-wait! Where are you going? You told me I could come and see you whenever I wanted. That…I could stay…I wanted to pay you back for saving me that night. You pulled a sword out of me.” Fai went after him. “Please, Mr. Kurogane! You have to remember!”

A white feathered dragon with piercing blue eyes flew high in the sky. He was searching for someone. Someone special. Someone strong who pulled out a painful sword from him many a night ago. Who drunkenly stated that he could come and stay at his place any time.

Fai looked at the ground before him and noticed a convention going on with several people surrounding several men dressed like butlers. Feeling oh so clever, Fai figured out the perfect outfit to approach the handsome man that saved him days ago. He found the apartment complex and his specific apartment, staring at it intently as he contemplated his approach to this situation.

Kurogane slipped his arms through the sleeves of his coat, pulled back the heels as he put on his shoes, and threw his briefcase over his shoulder. He checked his wristwatch as he opened the door, just as he did every morning. He needed to make sure he had enough time to grab breakfast on the way to the train station.

As he saw he was already two and a half minutes ahead of schedule, Kurogane realized there was no sunlight reflecting against his skin when he pulled open the door. It was supposed to be sunny today, and he was sure he didn’t need his umbrella this week. He looked up, and saw a large pair of eyes was staring back at him. His briefcase slowly dropped from his hand onto the floor with a pitiful thump.

Fai let out a breath of cold air, showing off his power a bit before he shined and transformed into a handsome looking blonde, as feathery as his body, and the hints of feathery wing like ears. They twitched lightly as he adjusted the suit he was now in but then he gave the man before him a bright smile. “Good morning, Mister Kurogane!” Fai beamed.

“Ah…” Kurogane looked him up and down. He was dressed far too nicely, and there was a tail sticking out of his backside. His ears were fluffy and twitched like an animal’s. With his blonde hair and blue eyes, he was definitely a foreigner. Kurogane had never seen him before in his life. “…Who are you?”

“I won’t tell him. Specifically because doing so would be terribly cruel. It would give him hope. It would feed these flames of affection he has for you. This whole punishment is to snuff them out. Or at least minimize them. I will inform him that you are doing well, however. Father will be sending Fai away once you are freed. To visit our people and help those in need. Spread some good faith towards the Flourite family name. It’s been a bit negative for a while. Our gold hearted prince, traveling to aid and ease our people will be good for everyone.”

Kurogane clenched his teeth and held his mouth shut. His grip on the place tightened, but he replied to Yuui with, “I understand,” before bowing to him.

“I am relieved that you do. It’ll make the parting easier for the both of you if the object of his desires is more or less neutral to the freedom.” Yuui smiled at him and then looked at his clay table. “If you don’t finish your project then I’ll be happy to finish it for you. I’m sure Fai would like a bit of a memory of you.”

“I’ll finish,” he replied, glancing at him. “I work with it for most of the day. I have plenty of time.”

A half hour later, Yuui unchained the both of them from the walls of the courtyard and brought them back to their rooms. “Lunch will be served for you soon. Behave, boys.” He ordered and left them for lunch to find Fai. He was fine for now, but it was still the first day. It might be different after a week or so.

“Of course, Prince Yuui,” Syaoron replied with a grin as he left. He peeked through the glass door to see Kurogane go straight to his meal. Syaoron sighed, “Are you mad at me? I don’t know if you’ll stay sane in here without anyone to talk to. Fai’s gone, and you don’t seem too talkative with Yuui.”

“I’m not mad,” Kurogane grumbled. “And I just… Prince Yuui doesn’t like me.”

“He is unbearable at times, isn’t he?” Syaoron sat down and scratched his head. “He’s fun in bed, but he needs to lighten up when he’s outside of this room. Sometimes I think this is the only place he can be himself.”

As Yuui went to lunch, Fai looked at him, hopeful. Yuui returned the look with one that said ‘I doubt I should even talk about him to you.’ before sitting down. Fai sighed and started to eat.

A week would go by before Fai broke down. Not majorly. But it was after begging and tears that Yuui went to Kurogane with a special plate. “I honestly shouldn’t be giving this to you, given his punishment.” He sighed. “He wanted to make dinner for you, to ensure you that he was thinking of you. I shouldn’t be telling you this, but the investigation has made progress. Chances are, you’ll be free by the time Fai’s punishment ends. Don’t let him know that you know. He wanted to keep it from you until you two saw each other again.”

Kurogane took the plate and immediately knew the food was different. More than that, it was made with care. He almost didn’t want to eat it. With a sigh, he looked to Yuui and asked, “I don’t know if you’ll tell him this, especially if I ask you...but let him know that I’m alright. That I’m still waiting for him.”

He’s written a pardon and everything if Kurogane is found truly guilty.” Yuui waved it off. “His heart will break a second time, and he’ll go. He’ll learn the hard way. A soft heart with a stubborn mind. He will learn to love in a different way.”

“I don’t know that much about Prince Fai compared to you,” Syaoron said, twirling his fingers in the blades of grass beneath him. “But I do know that he’s stubborn. Some people would call that a prince-like quality.”

Yuui let out a soft ‘tch’ and shot Syaoron a glare. “Stubbornness is useful in the court, especially as a Prince. Fai and I butt heads with members of the court in regards to policy. But this isn’t the court. This is our father and a familial matter. Father has no issue with same sex relationships. Marriages aren’t regulated or anything like that. It’s just…tradition…” He sighed and looked at Kurogane. “Fai always sneaks out of the palace. I wonder if he’s doing this because he needs something more. Perhaps he needs to spread his wings for a while. See the country and kingdom. Visit some foreign places…we haven’t traveled in a long time and we’ve never traveled without a large entourage.”

Yuui was just speaking to himself at this point. The idea of sending Fai away just to travel for a while didn’t sound too bad. He was trained well enough that he could fend for himself.

“I didn’t mean it like it was a good thing,” Syaoron laughed, stretching his arms out. “I also agree that Prince Fai is a little too soft. Maybe meeting new people in new places would do him some good.”

“Why do you think you got the glare?” Yuui huffed and stood. “I will discuss it with father. Fai will be upset should it come to that, but I think he’ll be more reasonable once Kurogane’s investigation is done.” He straightened out his clothes and stretched. “We’ll stay out a little longer before going in for lunch.”

“Yes, sir,” Syaoron sang. Kurogane had looked over at them, so Syaoron waved in his direction. With a turn of his head, Kurogane ignored him completely.

Father has forbidden it and thus why we resort to criminals. So at least we have…’something’.”

“Yes, but the King won’t be around forever,” Syaoron mused. “And I had already accepted death as my fate, anyway. I consider my circumstances right now as something between life and afterlife. It’s as if I got lost on my way down, but I’m not quite in purgatory yet. I mean, someone as gorgeous as you wouldn’t be there waiting for me.”

“Words like that are the reasons I don’t smile at you the way Fai does.” Yuui pointed out. “Chii will take the throne and I will not embarrass my sister like that either. I will not put her in that kind of danger. Father received many angry letters when he simply announced that Fai and I would not be taking suitors. If we had actual lovers…there would be pressure on her for us to marry. She will have enough pressure as it is when it comes time for her to select her own suitor. I will, at least, be dedicating my time to ensure her future husband will not just try to use her. Not finding a lover. Fai will do the same if he cherishes his sister more than himself.”

“Hm…” Syaoron gazed up at Yuui, and then looked back at Kurogane. He had walked out of the shade to stand in the sunlight, and seemed to be observing the clouds. Syaoron sighed. “Oh, well… Love is overrated anyway.”

“I’m glad we’re in agreement on that part. If he cannot get over his ideas of love before Chii takes the throne, then I will have him sent away. Not exiled but away. Perhaps some travelling will be what he needs to clear his head and find out his purpose to the palace is. I’ve already chosen to dedicate myself to the royal military and protecting my sister. Fai has yet to decide. Philanthropy would be up his alley, with that soft bleeding heart that he has.”
