In Memphis WE CARE! Driving down watkins through frayser on my way home from work I saw this sweet beautiful girl in the middle of the street looking for food. Cars were driving by honking their horn, not slowing up one bit almost hitting her. She was freezing, shaking and terrified - it was written all over her face with her tail tucked between her legs. Before I left work I checked the weather, it was -1 with wind chill. I pulled over to try and pick her up. Ended up 1/4 mile down the road before she finally came to me. Cars passing me by giving me ugly looks bc I was in the street trying to save her life. I lured her in with cooked chicken breast and turkey lunch meat. She had icicles hanging off of her with multiple sores on her body and looked anorexic. Not knowing if she'd bite me or if she had rabies, etc.. I picked her up and put her in the backseat of my truck. Took her to AEC on summer and sat with her for a hour until they opened up. Heartworm test - negative, not chipped and doc said didn't appear she was spayed. She is extremely sweet and will be needing a home. Please share this to find this sweetheart a good loving home and keep her off the streets. Thank you! (at Memphis, Tennessee)

Memphis and MLK 50

February 1, 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the Memphis Sanitation Workers’ strike. Sanitation workers Echol Cole and Robert Walker were killed as a result of racially influenced unsafe working conditions. This event not only was a catalyst for The Strike, but can be seen as the event that catapulted Memphis into the American Civil Rights Movement.

As I use this time to reflect on the rich diversity Memphis has achieved since, I can’t help to think about my visit to another city this past summer. All I will say is the racial/social-ethnic divide was noticeably larger there than it is here in Memphis. You don’t have to look far to see our progress. Our Memphis City Council just had the statue of Nathan Bedford Forest removed. Celebratory cheers resounded throughout Memphis- from both black and white.

I’m in no way saying the work is done. We indeed have a long way to go, but it is my belief we should applaud Memphis for how far it has come. Your praise may just help keep the vision clear for where we need to go- together.
