The only reply Terry can offer is silence, his expression reading both confusion and shock. When the Queen steps forward, he cannot help but take a step back while wringing his clammy hands. He finds himself speechless at first, trying to grasp even the shortest of replies, but he can only manage to let out sharp, nervous inhales rather than words.
After a few panicked moments, Terry brings himself to speak, even if his voice is trembling. “M-Ma’am… I—“ He cuts himself off again, letting out an shaky exhale, before continuing, “Li-Listen… I… I dunno how ya know any of this, ‘bout me, ‘bout my… my… br—brother, but, ya—ya gotta under—understand, uhh…”
There’s another pause as Terry swallows. He can’t even make up excuses, really. “I—I never… We-Well, I ain’t gotta tell ya a thing ‘bout what I did back there, I—I don’t think ya have th’ right t’ inter—interrogate me like some sorta crook.”
Oh, but he was a criminal. He knew that. He knew that far, far too well. Well, maybe an ex-criminal, but that’s no excuse. His thoughts are racing, this confrontation has only led to inner turmoil in his head to the point he can barely even defend himself, or hardly make sense, at that.
“Ya shouldn’t know thi—this, but ya d—do, and, well, if ya r—really do know…” He hesitates again. “…If ya know more than I rea—really know ‘bout myself, why do ya have to ask me these lil’ questions o’ yers, ‘specially if ya already know th’ answers t’ ‘em? Ain’t ya know to—to cut yer own weeds? T’ mind yer own business?” …Why is Terry actually getting defensive about this, anyways?
Come now, Theodore, you can't POSSIBLY tell me you haven't done a bit of wrong in your lifetime, hm? We both know your dear brother wasn't smart enough to work on that machine all alone. Are you really going to make him take ALL the blame?
Okay, wait, what? Who is this lady, why is she spouting this way-too-truthful nonsense, and--- wait. How did...
“How do ya-- how do ya even know m’ actual name, ma’am? More importantly, how do ya... know... ‘bout...” There’s a moment of silence. All Terry can really do is look away, his mind racing and heart pounding. Confrontation is always the worst, honestly. Like, seriously.
“I--I... Everyone’s... done wrong before, ma’am, it’s--it’s part of livin’, it’s-- I’m not-- blamin’ ‘im, it’s just...” Silence, again. He’s at a loss of words. He knows the answer, but...
7. How does your character perceive themselves? Positive? Negative? Neutral?
Oh, negative, definitely. Terry literally regrets so much of those years and even if that didn’t happen, he’s still really self-conscious of himself, even if he doesn’t act like it. Internally, he hates how small he is, and how weak he can be. He really, really hates it, and when growing up, his parents were no help. It’s hard for him to accept that he’s a runt, especially with what he had to deal with.
Even if he’s passionate about what he does, he’s still terrified of what people will think of him. He dealt with enough backlash back at his hometown about how he wanted to be a doctor, and he’s always expecting it with everyone he meets.
Finally; if your character was forced to eat one thing for the rest of their life, what would they choose and why?
Terry, being the smartie he is, would pick salad. Because, like, you can literally make anything into a salad. Fruit salad? Got it. Yam salad? Yes. Vegetable salad? Well, wait, that’s already a salad-- well, basically, Terry would pick salad. Because there’s a lot of options to put into a salad. Smart thinking, Terry.
