What means greenukum?

The name greenukum is a compound word, consisting of the word green and ukum: Green as a colour, which is most commonly associated with environment (-protection), life, hope and spirituality and is also considered the traditional colour of Islam.

Ukum is an Arabic (possessive pronoun) suffix and stands for “your/yours” (pl.): Thus greenukum implies, that it is YOUR nature, YOUR  environment, your life, your spirituality … you have to take care of it!

[A moroccan Hamman, Casablanca 2016]

Yesterday morning at 7.00 in the morning: My mom and I preparing ourselves to visit a Moroccan Hammam. A Hammam is similar to a Turkish bath, where Moroccans habitually (especially women, segregated of course) go to cleanse themselves. With a view to Ramadan a lot of Moroccans visit traditionally a Hammam. In preparation for the inner purification a physical purification is much need, my mom would say! “If we want to meet God, Who is the Most Pure, then we need to achieve purity. It is impossible to be polluted and then try to go towards God. If we want to go somewhere where the people are smart, well-dressed and beautiful, then we too need to make ourselves clean and tidy, we should put on good clothes and thus make ourselves somehow compatible with them. Otherwise they will say that we will spoil their gathering and damage their reputation.“

That’s why this kind of intensive cleaning of the entire body is at the same time a symbolic gesture; a gesture by which a Muslim feels like: The first step is made: I am prepared for it. Now I can start with a clean slate.
