Well that’s relatable as fuck lol.

My first dnd character was a canonically transfem tiefling. And all my other pcs were girls or eggs.

There’s a college in my city that has a rumor that there’s a secret basement below the known basement that can only be accessed via some hidden stairs scattered around the school or by pressing a secret number sequence in some of the elevators. The staff at the school are super annoyed by this and have no idea where this rumor started.

But I know. I think it was me.

In my defense I never intended to start a rumor. Many years ago I worked as a cleaner at the school and one evening I had to transport one of those big floor washing machines from the basement to the second level via the elevator. When the doors opened a very confused looking man stood inside. He was one of those slicked back gym-bro IT guys and made no movement to get out. The elevator wouldn’t fit him, me and the machine so I asked “Where are you going? Up or down?”

He gave me a smug shit-eating grin and said “Down?” in a mocking tone.

It took me a second to realize that of course he wasn’t going down, we were in the basement, but his look and tone annoyed me so much I refused to admit I misspoke and instead said “Yeah, down. I don’t know if you’re going to the second basement”

His smile disappeared “There’s a second basement?”

“Yeah but it sounds like you don’t have access to it so I guess you’re going up? I’ll just wait”

I never thought of it as anything other than a funny story to tell about that time I got so annoyed with a guy that I invented an entire second basement, but it turns out he probably refused to believe a cleaner fooled him and the story spread.

So fucking pissed off at this. Those terms are so damn slippery and unenforceable.

And this is honestly so much more infuriating given how long Kickstarter has held the stance of "products are the responsibility of the project creator, not us, we have no liability." If you get scammed on a project Kickstarter won't help you, they say you assumed the risk when you agreed to back a project for something that wasn't real yet. But now they're turning around and doing this? Why am I allowed to assume the risk of not getting the product I back, but not seeing the scary scary sExUAl cONteNt?

Very well said and might I add: a... anything and everything can be sexually gratifying to anyone. How would they even apply these checks if I say "naaaaahhhh fam, I definitely did nOT create this thing specifically for gratification"?? How would they even know if I made a zine about purple umbrellas with frogs painted on purely for the sexual gratification of myself and a select few? lol

And - for the nth time - I don't know how to tell this to terminally online purity culture people but sexual gratification is part of the life of the majority of people on Earth. If we keep repressing this in ways of such plaforms enforcing rules against it, it's gon' be reaaaal unhealthy out there, real soon! (Already is. Just saying.)

Kickstarter's COO stated that the now-reverted NSFW guidelines were put in place due to campaigns being 'suspended by Stripe mid-funding'

But this is also something you need to be contacting your elected officials about if you're in the US. I am not familiar enough with the issue to direct you anywhere specific, but I know there are a handful of good guides floating around that discuss why this issue is occuring with so many different banks and payment processors, scripts you can use to talk about it, places/people to contact, etc.

Personally, I think the way Kickstarter is going to handle this going forward is the best outcome for the current situation. They'll allow it on their end, but they're going to be as clear as possible with creators that it may be out of their hands. That's really all they can do until there is wider pushback against payment processors like Stripe.
