â18 seconds?â Abby repeated, mostly to herself. âThatâs an incredibly random amount of time.â But she could tell that Tech was now quite serious, so she dropped the subject and nodded in acknowledgement of his orders. âSounds like a plan.â
Reaching down again, Abby gathered a few more stones in her palm. This had to be the most insane thing sheâd ever done, attacking battle droids armed with nothing but a knife, some rocks, and the Force. But she supposed those would get her a long way, assuming their plan went well, so she cast Tech one last affirming look before shifting up onto her feet by the tiniest margin and beginning to creep towards the droids.
Once Abby reached the nearest large tree trunk, she hid behind it and prepared to throw the first stone. There was a tree off on the other side of the droids â the side opposite where she and Tech were moving â that had a cluster of large rocks at the bottom, and that was what she aimed for, hoping the clatter of stone on stone would be enough to distract the droids.
She threw the first stone, and it struck just where she had hoped, making a clear clicking and clattering as it fell into the pile at the bottom of the tree.
âWhat was that?â came the voice of one of the droids, and both of them turned their heads towards the noise, which was Abbyâs cue to move. Now fully upright so that she could go faster, she struck out for the next available hiding spot like a shot, making it to the tree trunk and pressing her back against it and letting out a quiet breath of relief. Her heart was pounding as she threw the second stone.
âItâs coming from over there,â said the droid, and both of them began to move towards where the stone had fallen. And now, Abby made a dash for it, out of the thick of the bushes and onto the clear land where the droids were standing. She didnât have to worry about branches snapping out here, so she moved even quicker, coming right up behind the droids before one of them finally seemed to realize that they werenât alone, and began to turn, only to be met by a sweeping blow from her knife and cybernetic arm.
As sheâd suspected, the arm did most of the work, plowing through the metalwork and wires that held the droidâs heads to their bodies before either of them could utter a word. They both collapsed onto the ground with a clatter, which was louder than she was quite comfortable with, but that part of the job was done now, at least. Turning away from the droids, Abby ran around the side of the ship to meet Tech. Her whole body was buzzing with adrenaline at the fact that she had really just killed two battle droids. It wasnât something sheâd ever imagined herself doing, but here she was, and it was incredibly strange. Still, she had done it.
Now, to hope that they could pull off the explosion without waking the droids inside.
