cw: flash flood, natural disaster
Rain poured down in sharp sheets, soaking through their umbrellas and drenching them to the bone as Nobara, Fushiguro, and Itadori darted toward the bus stop. Itadori animatedly replayed some of the fight much to Fushiguro’s chagrin while Nobara egged him on. She stopped on a dime as a deep rumble reverberated through the trio, and straining Nobara could just make out a dull roar beyond the pounding of rain.
Face white as a sheet, she grabbed the boys and ran. “Flash flood. We need to get to high ground now!” They stumbled but caught themselves easily as they darted alongside her. Itadori yanked down a fire escape as a wall of water crashed down the street. Nobara yelped as he grabbed her and Fushiguro underarm and leapt halfway up the escape, tossing them the rest of the way as he dashed up.
They landed clumsily, Nobara nearly face planting on the gravel roof before catching herself while Fushiguro landed hard on his side. The water swept past moments later, shaking the very foundation as Itadori helped Fushiguro then her up. “That was too close,” she snapped.
Itadori watched the water rush past, zoning out as Nobara lectured the boys, frustration growing. She snapped in front his face a few minutes in, pulling him out of it. “Hey! This is important, dipshits. Get caught in a flash flood and you die. Doesn’t matter how strong you are, pinky, you’re gone.” Nobara shuddered at the memory from childhood of a flash flood a town over wiping out any who were too slow or unaware.
“Do you think anyone got caught in it?” Guilt laced Itadori’s voice. “Maybe we could…”
“You heard her,” Fushiguro cut him off as she scoffed. “Once it dies down, we can look for survivors, but—”
“If it happens once, it’s more likely to happen while it’s still pouring,” Nobara finished, posture easing slightly as Itadori slumped.
Itadori brightened after a moment, but Fushiguro shot him a withering glare. “The veil.” Itadori slumped once more, sitting heavily on the roof.
Nobara sighed and settled beside him, Fushiguro on the opposite side as they watched the brown water race past carrying debris as small as twigs and as large as sedans with it. Itadori shrank in on himself more with each body that passed, though there were mercifully few compared to how bad it could’ve been. Cities didn’t get flash floods as often, but they were disaster zones when it did happen.
“We’ll have to watch out for cursed spirit activity when this passes,” Nobara muttered, fidgeting with her hammer as the minutes passed. “So much fear and death will be a feast for them.”
Fushiguro nodded sagely, but Itadori almost seemed excited at the prospect. Nobara shot him an odd look, gaze flicking to Fushiguro but he seemed just as confused. “Then we’ll be able to save some of them! Everyone’s close to death in disasters, right? So the veil won’t be as big a concern.”
“Fushiguro still can’t use his shikigami, though,” Nobara pointed out. “Nue will absolutely break the veil as good as it is for recon.”
“Datto people might assume are good aligned kami.”
Nobara shot him a disbelieving look. Satoru was basically his dad, and he treated the veil like that? Eeh, then again his dad was Satoru. The trio stayed like that for a few hours until the water slowly started to recede, and as much as she loathed to admit watching the boys, Nobara started to pick up on their little touches. Every time only one noticed, and they immediately pulled back and hid their blush from no one except than the other.
Around the second hour, Nobara finally snapped, whirling on the pair hammer extended. “Alright, either confess or I’m sitting between you.”
“What?” they both echoed, blushing fiercely.
“I’m not sitting here for the next however many hours while you try to pretend you don’t like each other. So either confess or I’m separating you two,” Nobara pointed her hammer where their shoulders nearly touched and sharply drew it to the side.
“Then move,” Nobara squeezed between them and shoved Itadori to the side. “Now, who wants to play eye spy?”
Thrown for a loop, the boys only stared as she loudly started guessing random properties based on the direction Fushiguro was looking. Away from Itadori. Still blushing goddamnit. Itadori slowly got up, also still blushing and sputtering but welcomed the excuse while he tried to calm down. Fushiguro was practically pouting at that point, but served him right. Nobara refused to be caught up in whatever bullshit dance they were doing.
