Finally, after the trials in December, we’re ready to start.
"Big Brother!" Luyu's voice came out soft as she moved over to the table, head tilted forward in mild curiosity. Why was he hiding? Hiding, in Luyu's vocabulary, often just meant that he wasn't out being as social as he could have been.
"Luban knotted my hair up again!" She gestured to the tangles behind her, expression clearly one of upset. "She won't stop getting her cats to bite me, either!"
A Cause for Celebration
The exile wasted no time pulling his beloved sister into a warm embrace with his free arm, careful not to disturb the infant on his shoulder. Pressing her close, his cheek rested atop the fiery strands he knew so well, “Xiaomei, what are-, father hasn’t-, how did you get here on your own?” Green eyes searched the road, expecting an escort to appear, but there was no sound of horses, nor any carriages in view. Shaking his head lightly, he returned to his full height, digits coming to rest comfortably on the small girl’s shoulder. “Here, come inside before it gets dark, it isn’t safe to be out of doors at night.” Stepping off to the side, he ushered the princess in, allowing Pengzu to enter with the water and directing him straight to the kitchen.
Looking the finely dressed lady over, Zixiao couldn’t help but sigh at her attire. Although he noted the distinct lack of anything -but- the clothes on her back, and the basket on her arm. It wasn’t that he minded, but how long was his sister intending to stay with them? Surely their father would be devastated by her disappearance! “Luyu, you shouldn’t travel wearing such expensive things… where’s your luggage? Didn’t you bring anything with you?”
"I wasn't planning on staying," Luyu answered, tilting her head to one side, "And I left wearing what I had. I didn't have much time. I just had to see you-- everyone. I've been in my room for so long, I couldn't stand it anymore. I'm so sad..."
Luyu's expression changed suddenly as the reminder of why she'd been cooped up suddenly came to mind. There was a soft sniffling at her nostrils, her head bowing forward. "Ba's gone, father's very sick... h-he won't last much longer. I've heard that he might recall you from exile." She began, one hand raising to press against her lips, "and... M-My Lord... Zhuge Ke. I've heard sister talking about his favoritism of you... I fear...I...I fear..."
Luyu suddenly dropped to her knees before the elder Sun, her head bowing forward as she dared speak. She had to do everything she could to oppose her sister, that much was clear. But when one lacked the strength and courage to do something, how were they to do it alone?
"Brother, I don't know what to do. If father is gone and cousin takes the throne, we don't have a chance. He's crazy. He's crazy in love with my sister. What do I do? what do I do...." The young girl bent forward to press her forehead against the floorboards in a pleading bow, caring nothing for her station or title. "I don't want to go another minute alone, Zixiao. It's so stifling. I can't eat, I can't sleep. I just want everyone to be together!"
A Cause for Celebration
Finally, Zixiao thought to himself, pacing slowly across the floor with the now thoroughly exhausted child in his arms. Jun was so fussy compared to his other children as infants, but once he was actually asleep, it would be hours before any amount of noise could even cause him to turn. As long as he was actually asleep to begin with, anyway. Unsure if the boy was just dozing or had actually gone down for the night, the father continued his steady motions across the small abode, beginning to hum lightly. Hopefully Pengzu won’t be too much longer… dinner will be too late for most of us if he doesn’t hurry back.
A soft tapping from the front of the house broke his thoughts, and the former prince moved hurried to door to pull it open for his son, assuming the boy to be struggling under the weight. Chiding good naturedly, Zixiao pulled on the door, “You know Pengzu, if you set it down, it won’t be half as heavy when you—”
"…Xiaohu?”
Xiaohu, upon watching the door open up and hearing her name be spoken, could no longer contain the happiness that had been brimming in her eyes. They were filled to the tops, saline waters forcing out of their flood gates to begin pouring down her cheeks.
He's real. He's still okay.
Assuring herself of this, the beaming young woman reached forward to press her hands to the other's forearms, crimson strands falling over her eyes. The girl had never once done something so disobedient, let alone something as such that she'd be happy with or proud of, but here she was.
"Zixiao," She screamed in a soft whisper, afraid that if she exerted anymore energy in her throat that it might crack open. "Zixiao, I came to see you."

She set her bucket to the side before standing in front of the door, picking up the hem of her skirt…
Luyu tapped against the bottom of the floor with the front of one of her vermilion slippers, the embroidering on her purple robes shimmering in the soft sunlight. Her head bowed momentarily as she waited for the door to open, casting a glance of excited apprehension toward the younger boy nearby. She absently began fixing her hair back into place, the princess' painted features lit up in anticipation for the person that lingered just beyond this doorway.
The Fourteenth Day
Though still rattled with surprise, Sun He’s eldest returned the hold quickly with his free arm. Turning back to assist in lifting the heavy bucket, a smile began forming on his features as the adrenaline ebbed.
"If Aunt Luyu is sad, then that place really isn’t very good anymore,” he commented in good spirits. His young-hearted aunt had always seemed so happy and full of life, and was one of the biggest factors that left him missing Jianye from time to time. Not to say that he wasn’t happy here in Guzhang, but it took getting used to and most of the people the boy grew up around were far out of his reach. It was called ‘exile’ for a reason, he inwardly chided.
Thinking on that, was she allowed to be here…?
Pengzu didn’t have much time to dwell on thoughts he didn’t want to entertain, anyway, as the elegant princess’s joy became more than evident. The auburn-haired child beamed up at her, feeling a rush of energy that he hadn’t felt in weeks. ”Bàba isinside with everyone else,” he answered, using his head to gesture to the nearby home as he finished pulling up the bucket. Resting it on the side of the well and using one hand to steady it, the exiled royal turned to face Sun Xiaohu once more. ”If you want to give them an even bigger surprise, you should go ahead of me and knock on the door with your foot. I do that sometimes, if the bucket is too heavy and I don’t want to set it down.”
He had grown? Really? A light flush coloured the Sun’s cheeks, face visibly brimming with happiness. ”You really think I’ve gotten bigger, Aunt Luyu?” Someday he’d be big like his father. Someday! ”I love history — Thank you, thank you!”
"I missed you, too. A lot. I think everyone will be happy to see you. My little brother is getting really big, too! You should hold him!”
"Mmm? When you don't feel like it~? My, then perhaps big and lazy too," She chided gently, leaning forward to press her painted lips against his forehead. "Of course, I joke. I will surprise your father then, hmm? You should come inside as well. I will hold the door open for you when he opens it. Sound good?"
The short conversation was cut off as she released her hold on him, tempted to actually help him carry the heavy pail, but otherwise made her way over to the door. Seeing her nephew so happy made her stomach flip on the inside, joy bubbling up in her heart to spill over her eyes.

The Fourteenth Day
“Sun Pengzu!"
It had been difficult finding any time to himself that day, and Pengzu had jumped at the opportunity to gather water at the well. While it was located in extremely close proximity to his family’s abode and some of the louder sounds from within were easily audible, the outdoor atmosphere of the evening was already a great relief to the boy, the overall silence smoothing away some of his raised senses. The nearby call of some small winter bird drawing its family in for the night, he assumed, rang through their small corner of Guzhang.
Drawing up the water as slowly and deliberately as he could, citrine eyes focused lazily on the rope his hands worked at, thoughts wandering freely. So lost in thought was he that the approaching footsteps hardly seemed to register in his ears. The voice that accompanied them, however, knocked the youth out of his reverie, his grip on the rope lost completely in his startlement. Reaching forward with haste his hands grabbed onto the rough cord, posture turning to see the woman who had approached him, eyes wide.
"A-Aunt Luyu!" Was he seeing things? Blinking a few times, one hand leaving the sisal rope so that he could face her more fully, Sun Pengzu took in the appearance of his sudden guest. This was certainly Princess Xiaohu, without a single doubt. He could not keep the surprise from his voice, nor the mild confusion. ”What are you doing here?”
Immediately the girl reached out to grab onto her nephew, a completely contented smile locked upon her features. Red hair jostled and bounced upon her head as she moved, helping him to grab hold of the rope he'd almost dropped.
"Mmhm!" She exclaimed, her fingers clamping down around the cord to pull. "I came to visit you and big brother! I got so sad at the palace without all of you, so I wanted to come here!"
Luyu's expression was one of pure joy, tinted with roseate coloration across her cheeks. Her eyes were full enough to produce tears, heart pounding away in her chest. "I brought presents and food for everyone, too! Is your father here? Can I see him?"
She kept one hand pressed against Pengzu's cheek, her head cocking to one side in a friendly manner, "Ah! I missed you so much! Already you've started to get so big! I brought you some texts from the palace, among other things. You like history, right?"
Friends 1, 2, 3, and 4 thought it was a good idea for me to make a post concerning courtesy names, given names and honorifics for those in the Dynasty Warriors and Three Kingdoms fandoms!
Well, here you go:
Style or Courtesy Names
A style name is typically given to a young man at the age of twenty, hence the usual start of the name with Zi. However, these names can vary on meaning and tend to have a very deep connection back to the roots of both the given and ancestral names. They can also be themed within a family, such as the Eight Da.
When you take on a style name, it becomes your public name. However, that does not mean that, like in places like the Western World, you can simply go up to them and call them by their style name. If you do not know them, you refer to them by their family name that they give to you unless otherwise specified by their holder.
Here is an example conversation: This is also used in modern mandarin conversation.
Jiang Wei:
nǐ 你 xìng 姓 shén 什 ma 么？
This literally translates to: What is your surname?
Ma Chao: néng. 能. gào. 告. sù. 诉. wǒ. 我. nǐ. 你. de. 的. míng.
"May I have your name?"
Such responses to this might be:
Zhao Yun:
wǒ 我 xìng 姓 Zhao.
"My Family name is Zhao."
Jiang Wei: Oh! Hello, Lord Zhao.
Regarding Given Names
Given names are first names. Only those on family, sworn family, or close friendships are allowed to know your given name. This especially applies to women. If you are a female, you would be known in this time period as Lady ___
Such as the name Zhenji or Wenji.
Lady Zhen. Lady Wen. “Ji”.
Here is an example of how a conversation might go:
Jiang Wei: Pardon me; Might I have your family name, my Lady?
Guan Yinping: My family name is Guan.
Jiang Wei: Good heavens! Lady Guan, I did not recognize you!
The use of one’s given name in any situation outside of private friendship or family (again private settings) is generally very rude.
Now, how you RP your character is your business, but this has been an educational post concerning given and style names and the appropriate use of Lord and Lady.
Furthermore, there are even people who can be very close to you who are not permitted to call you by your style. Examples of these would be a father or grandfather to their child or grandchild. The given name would be used here. Emperors, on the other hand, have full jurisdiction to refer to a person by whichever name they please, and whichever they use can hold a different kind of significance. For any seeking an expansion on this knowledge, I would be happy to extrapolate in private conversation, and I don’t doubt that OP would be open to it, as well. For another outside resource, you can always refer to this: The Definitive Guide to Names and Style Names. There is also a wealth of information on the Internet, and while it can be a bit of a confusing subject to learn at first, it’s quite useful. Even beyond being part of social etiquette, examining the delicate use of names can allow insights into other aspects of the traditional culture our characters belonged to!

The Fourteenth Day
The Princess Sun walked her way down the dusty path, her vermilion shoes dirt-covered and finally dried from walking through so much of the rice-grown land. She'd taken a coach most of the way there, but having not wanted to draw attention to herself, had stopped just outside of the settlement of Guzhang.
She carried with her a basket wrapped in red cloth. True, what was inside would need to be reheated over an oven, but she thought it would prove a good treat for those she'd escaped to see. It would only be a matter of time before her sister alerted her father to her status and, she figured, her location would be most obvious.
Though as she wandered down the dusty road, her legs grew tired and her eyes grew heavy, the sun high in the sky that early evening. She neared a stone well upon coming into town, the basket swinging lazily over her elbow as she moved.
However, upon seeing a figure nearing the well beside her, the young woman pulled back the crimson hood that had been concealing the obvious head of red hair beneath it. She hoped not to alert others of her presence, but otherwise cast a smile at the young form before her. Would he remember her?
"Sun Pengzu!"
"17. The Sovereign of Wu did not like it and so he inquired into how Princess Zhu [Sun Luyu] came to her death. [1] Princess Quan [Sun Luban] was afraid and said, “ I really had nothing to do with it. It was all because Zhu's two sons, Zhu Xiong and Zhu Sun had accused her.” At this time, Zhu Xiong was du (Commander) of Hulin and Zhu Sun was du (Commander) of the barrack in the suburb of the capital. The Sovereign of Wu put both to death. [4] Zhu Sun's wife was a younger sister of Sun Jun."
17.1 This sentence is partly from SGZ, where it reads: “During the Taiping period, Sun Liang came to know that Princess Zhu had met her doom at the hand of Princess Quan and inquired how Princess Zhu came to her death.”
17.4 Sgz has: “Sun Liang killed Zhu Xiong and Zhu Sun.”

“…Married?" Luyu repeated, eyeing the young Lu Kang with a raised eyebrow. What was father thinking? She’d already been married to Zhu Ju before his removal, but now she was supposed to find herself married to the son of the Grand Commander? What was she to do?
Lu Kang’s shoulders and head bowed formally, his hands disappearing within the sleeves of white cloth that dangled about his wrists. “Princess Sun,” He greeted her once more, “I would be very humbled by your acception of the proposal, though I wish you to know that anger will be nothing I harbor should this be rejected on both accounts."
Xiaohu wasn’t exactly sure of what to make of it, noting the way he spoke and how formally eloquent he was, and yet she still couldn’t help but notice how strange it would be for the two to wed. They weren’t that far apart in age at all.
“I will need to speak to my father further, but I do not see why it would be a tragedy… do you like flowers, Lord Lu?” The princess turned and seated herself upon the ground, earning a shocked expression from the man nearest her. Upon him being taken aback, the princess only continued. “General of the Chariots and Cavalry, Zhu Ran,’s son often spends time with me in creating crowns of them when he has time. He is a very kind young man. What about you?”
Perhaps if he answered favorably, this wouldn’t be so bad after-all.

“How does this look?" Zixiao held out the ring of messy petals, a proud grin seated on his features from the work he had done. In turn he earned a strange look from the auburnette, her head cocking curiously to one side as she reached out to take the crown.
It was kind of lopsided, but a kind smile pushed onto her lips as she pulled it from his grasp. It was still a gift nonetheless, right? The thought that counted.
Plopping it down on the her scarlet crown, she smoothed out a few strands before turning back to look over Sun Zixiao’s features, a grin pressing to roseate lips. ”How do I look?"
“I don’t think I’ve seen a prettier princess," Zixiao replied with an equally pleased, if not slightly wild grin. His eyes were wide with delight, reaching out to take hold of his sister’s wrist and pull her forward onto his thighs. It was a familiar gesture that Luyu had become accustomed to, and she happily situated herself in her brother’s lap.
“Let’s do this again tomorrow, and the day after. You’ll get better and better at it and we can be together outside, too!" Luyu insisted, turning her head around to look at the emerald hued orbs possessed by the ex-heir apparent. "We don’t need to ever go back to Jianye. It can just be us here, in Guzhang. Right? I’ll teach Pengzu how to make them, too!"
The Lantern Festival - February 14th
Munpost: So I know a lot of you will be celebrating St. Valentine's Day, but I got a lot of requests to do a little piece on the holiday tomorrow-- the one that isn't Valentine's Day. It is the 15th and last day of Chinese New Year and is known as the Lantern Festival, or Shàngyuánjie.
"Rice dumplings are eaten this day. Candles are lit outside houses as a way to guide wayward spirits home. This day is celebrated as the Lantern Festival, and families walk the street carrying lighted lanterns."
This day is celebrated by individuals seeking for a romantic partner, akin to Valentine's Day. Normally, single women would write their contact information on mandarin oranges and throw it in a river or a lake while single men would collect them and eat the oranges. The taste is an indication of their possible love: sweet represents a good fate while sour represents a bad fate. (Modernish)
