She lets that statement linger for a moment, her gaze drifting to the world outside her window. Little droplets of rain begin to plop and slide down the glass, making her all the more thankful for Angie right now. Being alone in the rain is just about the last thing she needs.
❝I’m still operating solo. Word on the street is that S.H.I.E.L.D.’s rebuilding — has a dozen or two members, or so I’ve heard. I’m not sure who’s directing now that Fury’s dead and Hill’s at Stark’s. And until I know who’s running the show and who’s following, I’m not signing up again. I need to be sure it’s the same S.H.I.E.L.D. I believe in. I’ll be watching them as I do HYDRA. Just one more organization to stalk.❞
❝I've heard. I got visited by one of them, actually. Said they needed assistance.❞
There's no way to state just how much Angie wasn't sure about the entire ordeal. She had a gig with the CIA, after all, and she wasn't up to ruining their decision to place some trust in her.
❝I don't know what to make of it yet. I've had my bouts of missing my days in S.H.I.E.L.D., but... I don't know. I'm getting used to being out, I guess.❞
It's not something she's willing to easily admit, but her old struggle to need something like S.H.I.E.L.D. again was hindered by the events that took place at the end. She had never had trouble sleeping before, not quite like this, not until now. The end left a mark on her that she'd always see the scar of. It was everywhere. There were only a few things that helped her shake all the unanswered questions that still made echoes in her down time.
❝You're going to have to do me the favor of coming to my wedding, when it happens. It's going to be small. Nothing fancy.❞
"Mmm, but don’t think your fiance isn’t going to be eating the ones you don’t want, plus i got myself some burgers."
"One day your good metabolism's going to give out, and then you're gonna get fat."
❝A place to stay would be lovely. As would a burrito.❞
Her apartment’s clear on the other side of Manhattan and she isn’t up to making that trek. And to be honest, steering clear of home is best for now. She’s getting reckless now — the work’s all sloppy. Tonight’s target of choice wasn’t even affiliated with anyone. Just a lowlife with a bad attitude and too many drinks in him.
❝I'll call up a place when we get there. I could go for a big plate of nachos.❞
There's something comforting about being in the presence of another former agent. There were only a few she could manage to open up to now, after all. Angie had yet to ask about what she'd been doing out tonight, but she could safely assume it wasn't some run to the store or anything like that.
❝What's the news, Evelyn? Anything new?❞
"I got curly fries, regular fries, and even spicy fries, just incase you changed your crazy pregnant mind.”
"Look at how smart my fiance is. I think my fiance deserves a kiss."

Eve looks up in surprise and moves over to let the woman sit. “Yeah,” she replies softly. “I don’t usually like winter weather, but it’s not so bad today. Hopefully it lasts.”
"Here's hoping. I don't exactly like snow, or ice, for that matter." She gave a little shrug, opening the thermos and taking a quick sip of the broth. "It's impossible to drive in. But this weather, I could get used to."
"Please tell me you got me curly fries with that milkshake, and not regular fries."
Evelyn wasted no time at all hopping into the passenger’s seat, the door slamming with a statement behind her. Reclining as much as one could in the seat of a car, the exhausted ex-agent turned her gaze from the road to the vehicle’s ceiling. In one piece, indeed.
❝I wanna say this isn’t how I imagined our reunion going down, but let’s be real — what alternatives were there?❞
❝Meeting at a Chipotle would have been a nice alternative. Not that one of those are even open at this hour.❞ Not that the thought that they'd actually find themselves in a "normal" reunion setting was plausible, either. Angie busied herself with changing the radio station while they were at a light. When she found nothing, the radio was promptly turned back off. ❝So... do you need a place to stay, or am I taking you somewhere specific?❞

She’s sitting on a bench, a cup of coffee in hand, just….watching.
It felt good to take breaks outside from time to time. Her workplace was always stifling. Angie settled herself beside the woman, a thermos of soup in tow. It was cold, yet it made for a pleasant reprieve in her busy day.
"It's a nice day out."
❝I can’t make any promises, lovebug. But I’ll do my best, how’s that?❞
Thank goodness Angie was local. Whenever she managed to get into these situations, those she felt comfortable reaching out to summed up to a short list. Tapping out of the phone call, Evelyn returned her now-free hand to the source of pain in her side. She’d taken a decent hit there.
She kept to her word about only taking fifteen minutes. One thing about helping former agents-- doing favors didn't come lightly, even if they were no longer a part of a team. Her trust extended to these few people in a way that made her feel entitled to taking things seriously. Angie unlocked the doors and rolled down her window as she caught sight of Evelyn, straightening up in her seat.
❝I'm so glad to see you in one piece, at least. Get in.❞

❝Hey there. Can you do me a solid? I need a pick-up on 34th & Madison. Near the Empire State Building. Couldn’t miss it if you tried.❞
❝ Oh, you're just the person I was hoping would call. It's been too long. You caught me while I'm still in Manhattan, or else I would have been way too far out of city limits to help.
I'll be there in fifteen. Don't vanish off the face of the earth again between now and then, okay? ❞

"Probably. But you’re a priority." She was not only a lawyer, but one within the CIA, of all places. An ace in the hole, of sorts. Right now, just getting back on their feet… SHIELD needed that.
There's a long, frustrated sigh. "You're so lucky I'm in a good mood today." Otherwise, he'd at least end up feeling the wrath of Pregnant-Former-SHIELD-Ag- ent-now-Stuck-in-the-CIA. This was really impairing her from being completely honest with them, but it wa- sn't like she hadn't been toeing the line of staying on the CIA's good side for awhile now.
"Fine. Brief me or do whatever you need to do, but don't count on me being able to offer up as much as I could before." There's two seconds before she co- nsidered everyone else at home. She wondered if Ellis had been asked the same thing. It wouldn't have settled her if he had. She knew he was bett- er off being entirely with his family. He couldn't deal with any of this right now, much less at all.
"If it's not much to know, has there been anyone else in the area that's been told the same thing?"
"So serious.” Hunter teased briefly, before letting out a sigh. “Bloody hell, fine. SHIELD needs assistance. The kind only you can provide.” A pause, then a grin. "Exciting, innit?"
That would've sounded so much more intriguing had she not seen SHIELD torn down from the inside. "No. No, not really." There's a beat as she collected herself. It's not as if she hadn't seen the news. Obviously, there was some- thing there, but that didn't warm her up to the idea of a new SHIELD. Neither did it warm her up to the fact that a call to action was being put in front of her.
At least she didn't look willing to shoot the messenger.
"Isn't there anyone else SHIELD can bother?"
"What do I want?" He paused, mulling it over. "Well, I wouldn’t mind a beach house in Hawaii. Couple ‘a palm trees. Nice stretch of land. But for now, I think I wanna talk about how a former SHIELD Agent winds up wasting her skills within the CIA.” A pause. “— Well, I don’t want to. But hey, while I’m still being paid…”
"I don't waste my time explaining my moral choices to strangers until I know who they are. So why don't we start there, and then, if I'm happy with the answer, you can get to the point. Cause, you know, some of us have jobs to do." And people to protect, might she add without clearly voicing it.
"I come in peace! But go ahead; conduct a search if it’ll make you feel better.”
"Sorry, a stranger telling me they come in peace doesn't work to settle my nerves anymore." And working with the CIA has gotten the best of her lately, not to mention a dozen other factors that made her nervous.
"Okay, cards on the table. What do you want?"
"What? No, what?" he looked up at her, head tilted. Leave? Go to Ellis, where Ellis could kick his ass?
"I …think what over? How I need to get a damn job now for sure? That watching soaps isn’t going to pay the bills for a crib, toys, diapers, clothes, diaper magic thing that stops the smell or whatever …"
He’d been watching infomercials too.
"I won't be taking maternity leave until I'm two weeks away from my due date. There's, what.. six, seven months before that happens? Yeah, I need you to get up from the sofa at some point, but I'm not asking you to turn your entire life around right now. I just--"
Angie sighed, closing her eyes. "I do a lot for my family. You, Ellis, Penelope. Now Melody. I work to make sure we don't get fucked over by the government. This baby... jeopardizes things. I wasn't expecting anything like this, but I can't... terminate it, her or him, either. What I need right now is a little less shock and awe."
