Ha ha, okay- I'm doing research for a presentation on dune encroachment in Mauritania, and I come across this: for $115 you can buy a picture of "Nouakchott Being Covered by the Sahara in a Desertification Process". Well, 1) it's not actually showing that 2) isn't that kind of a dark thing for some random person to hang on their wall? and 3) it is sort of beautiful. - Cheikh-Ahmed
I'm sorry, I've been reading this for years, but... do we all know about this parody site? Occasionally mean-spirited but often hilarious. And it makes for a nice study break. Cheikh-Ahmed ould Mohamed el Abdi

great opinion article
Hi all. sorry i've been a lackey in the posting department lately...school takes a lot of time...who knew?
I wanted to share this opinion article from the NY Times I read it when it first was published back in the spring and now rediscovered it today...it's about how we like our technology perfect, but our world and our relationships aren't perfect, and how Facebook can be an illusion, and finding ways to connect with the real world meaningfully...it's good I recommend a read over.

For a decade, New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art has been planning for the November 1 opening of its renovated and expanded galleries of Islamic art, harnessing the talents of curators, conservators and scientists to showcase masterworks whose themes and styles link the artistic traditions of distinct Islamic cultures. (zeinabou)
I had no idea that they even played that in Mauritania...kind of funny.

I don't know how I feel about this - but thought it was an interesting new approach for encouraging women to look for early warning signs of breast cancer. Zeinabou Ba
also this is pretty. this was filmed in iceland...
i am so excited to become an elementary teacher, so i can i have my students draw pictures and do other art work while listening to music like this for a little bit each day.

Hey have we all seen this? I'll bet we have, but I just came across it again for a paper I'm writing so I'm sharing here.
"Appropriate technology" is pretty awesome, and how much cooler would it have been to roll one of these instead of lugging a giant, yellow, plastic jug everywhere?
I'm on a Fela Kuti kick lately. No music vids for Fela, but here's one of his son, Femi. Two reasons to watch it are 1) he's hot, and 2) it begins with the most adorable little-kid-dancing you've ever seen.
This is a Fresh Air interview with Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are), and it struck a nerve with me so I thought I'd share. It's about 20 minutes, which means you may want to download it and listen to it later on your IPod. Just be careful about listening to it in public.
A legend in the movement of trees and Africa... I posted this on my facebook - but as you know - I love trees (gt) - this woman is a true inspiration. This story of the hummingbird captures her very well. She passed away today at age 71.
