When the topic becomes about racism between children you very quickly realise children of colour aren't seen as children but as some other thing that should just take the abuse and then forgive the Real White Children because they didn't know better. They don't understand it but children of colour can and will very early in their youth.
I love polyamorous people!!!!! Multiple of them! But we can get the number higher!! More of them could stand to love me also!!!
its kinda messed up that everyones so mean now. can we go to nicies world together. i would like it if we did
"I just find it hard to believe some people who claim to be systems. why do all their alters have strange names and unique appearances and weird mannerisms?" queer people are disproportionately at risk of experiencing childhood trauma. autistic people are disproportionately at risk of experiencing childhood trauma. there are countless studies on this if you want to hear it right from the source. childhood trauma is the driving factor behind a massive majority of DID/OSDD system formations. I trust that you can connect the dots here!
if you intentionally choose to disregard peoples' existences based on their appearance or behaviours, you have biases that you absolutely need to deconstruct before people like me can ever feel safe around you.
you can start by saying nothing about how you "just can't believe it" when someone you don't know exists as a system where you can see. you can keep going by trusting the people in your life when they share extremely vulnerable information about themselves.
telling someone that you're part of a system feels like exposing your soft underside. I've cried from terror almost every time I've had to reveal it to someone I care about, and I don't cry easily. if someone tells you they're part of a system, they're placing a monumental amount of trust in you.
please don't break that trust.
actually, another thing!!! you are seeing systems who:
1. actually know that they're systems (this is rare. being online makes resources on figuring it out WAY more accessible) 2. happen to exist in the same online space as you, the tumblr user reading this 3. are, as a result, usually younger and/or autistic and/or queer, which are all factors that can influence individual alters' identities.
so of COURSE you think we're all like this. you're looking at one damn tree instead of the whole forest!!! there are systems who are 60 years old and never had the resources to figure out what was going on. there are systems who are 30 and barely use social media for personal reasons. there are systems who are 20 and don't tell anyone because of the cruelty they've faced every time they try. there are systems who are 15 and are SO relieved to have answers to why everything felt weird and wrong their whole life, so they shout it from the rooftops. your limited interactions with systems in specific online spaces does not represent the majority of systems on earth.
even if it did represent the majority of systems on earth we STILL deserve to be treated like people. this should not be something I have to beg for!!!!!
I'm in tears. I'm in tears.
Prejudices around mental health, identity, and disability are definitely all at play here.
All of which are made worse by how these things are discussed and taught in schools.
In regards to DID, I think I learned more about it in high school than while I was getting a bachelor's degree in psychology. And at the high school level, that mostly consisted of watching and discussing "The Three Faces of Eve" (and not even talking about how the book and movie were written by "Eve's" psychologist, who had actually failed her pretty badly).
Anyway, use this opportunity to learn more about DID (or other "weird" mental health issues) and fight back against the misinformation and prejudices floating around out there.
It doesn’t help that there’s almost no positive representation of systems in media.
This is true of all mental health issues, but from what I can tell, DID/OSDD and other dissociative disorders in particular suffer from being popular horror tropes. And because it became such a popular horror trope, a bunch of people who don’t understand it actively tried to find ways to make it scary, to the point that it’s become a despised and predictable twist. Do you know how much you have to beat the shit out of a mental health trope to make the main issue with it in the public eye that it’s overdone and not that it’s, y’know, harmful?
I can think of maybe three instances of systems being depicted in a show or movie that didn’t involve them killing someone. Do you understand that? Two. I have watched countless numbers of shows and movies with systems as characters, and I can think of TWO that didn’t depict that person as a murderer. One of them is a documentary.
Of course we want to talk about our lives. We’re so tired of being told that we’re the monsters.
And then when we talk about our lives, we’re called monsters all over again. Or told that we’re faking.
So let me put this thought into your head.
Why would someone fake something like this? Something that makes people treat you like a monster?
If — and this is a very big if, because most systems aren’t faking, and in fact sometimes worry that they are — someone does fake being a system, they probably have other very real issues they’re dealing with.
Am I saying that that’s acceptable behavior? No. Are they still a person, and therefore worthy of care and compassion? Absolutely.

The problem with discussing anything complicated is that it's a real roulette whether you're going to have an intelligent, nuanced and practical conversation, or end up hearing some of the worst takes of your life.
I once had an economic conversation with a guy who was adamant that we should eliminate currency and go back to a barter system for world peace because "lots of people kill over money, but I've never heard of someone getting killed over a cow."
This was a real man who was actually serious and I had to see him every week to play Dungeons and Dragons.
It's also fun to have conversations with "people with too much money or desiring money cause so many problems, so we could make the world better by eliminating money" guys and you start asking basic questions about how product and service creation and distribution would work in their system and they quickly end up reinventing money but calling it something different.
Alien species in a video game: "Our society has advanced beyond the need for 'money'! We only trade things of inherent value."
The same alien 10 seconds later: "So we'll buy xzy from you for 50 credits each, we'll sell you fuel for 10 credits a unit, here's our price list for various technology and information--"
In the Wayfarer Series, the human refugee space stations don't have money (they can do this because they're relatively small and socially organised and basic essentials are provided to everyone for free, so it's not really a big deal if a barter fails or is inconveniently labyrinthine) and that system's started failing in later generations because they've become exposed to societies that do use money. The instant somebody who uses money shows up with exciting things to trade, money itself becomes a valuable barter good (you can trade it with those foreigners for cool stuff). And once you've got something convenient to carry and store (physically or digitally) that only has value in barter, and everyone knows of its value in barter (how much cool shit the foreigners will give you for the coin), the local unofficial adoption of the coin is pretty much inevitable even if you somehow haven't adopted some other stable item as a local barter currency in the meantime.
I know we've moved far past this point, but my historian ass needs to emphasize that so so many people got killed over cows. When the most valuable thing you own is an animal that can walk off, shockingly enough there's a lot of incentive to sneak in and convince your neighbor's cow to leave with you and similar incentive to violently prevent it.
