“Pretty sure I have,” Dipper replied with a nod. “Just need the concrete proof. I’ve set up night-vision cameras before, tried to get some footage of them caught in the act, but ghosts are sneaky.”

“Huh, sounds pretty interesting,” Star mused, genuinely intrigued by what he was talking about. “I’ve never met someone who’s actually seen ghosts in action, so I guess I’ll take your word for it and assume they exist. Good thing I’ve never met one myself -- they sound like major assholes.”

“Because no one’s ever been able to prove that they don’t exist,” Dipper answered. “Besides, I’ve read all sorts of books on them - all that stuff people attribute to hauntings, it can’t just be coincidence. And I’ve even seen signs of them with my own eyes: objects mysteriously moving from where you left them, sudden cold spots, little sounds in the wall you can’t identify…”

“Hm, guess you’ve got a point there,” Star murmured. “So you’re trying to tell me that you’ve actually seen what ghosts can do?” Even though she looked fairly serious for a moment, she then allowed a smile to spread across her face and said, “That’s pretty cool, actually.”

Dipper raised a thoughtful brow at that. “And what makes you think that ghosts aren’t real?” he asked lightly.

“Because I’ve never seen one before and no one’s ever been able to prove to me that they exist,” Star replied with a casual shrug, crossing her arms over her chest. “Why do you believe in ghosts?”

“You know, the ones with the chainsaws and knives aren’t the ones you need to worry about. Real ghosts don’t swing around weapons; in fact, most of them can’t even hold stuff, period. They do things mostly telekinetically.”

“But ghosts aren’t real -- and probably won’t even be at the haunted house -- so all we need to worry about are the actual people running around with weapons.”

“Well, if you’re sure,” Dipper said, giving her a brief nod. “Although - punching employees, that’s not, like, a regular thing for you, is it?”

“God, of course not -- do I look like the type to randomly punch people? It’s just instinct for me to attack someone who looks like they’re attacking me, which really doesn’t happen all that much. You don’t have to worry about me hitting innocent people; it’ll only be the ones lunging at me with chainsaws and knives, silly.”

“You literally just added ‘sy’ to the end of ‘Squid,’ but I guess I’ll take what I can get. Anyways, I’ll come back to get my wand once Halloween blows over -- I just don’t need it getting lost during all the madness of the holiday. Better to keep it safe and sound than accidentally throw it in some kid’s candy bag.”

“My parents were just…kind of strict. I never went trick or treating or anything, I just watched Halloween movies. Not even scary movies. Just…basically It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Which is a great movie, but I think a haunted house sounds like more fun and my parents aren’t here. Wait…really? Like, did you take a self defense class or something?”

“Ah, strict parents -- I know how that goes. I mean, mine probably aren’t as strict as yours, but they’re pretty close. I’m honestly surprised they even let me come to America all on my own. And I guess you could call them classes, but it was more like me picking up on what I saw and learning from my babysitters. I could always teach you a thing or two, if you want?”

“That’s exactly what I need! If I have someone to grab, it’s less likely I’ll try punching someone or run out of the place screaming. Besides, the more, the merrier.”

“Uh, I dunno… Those haunted places, you’ve got to be careful around them. Come prepared, you know? They get intense. You sure you’re up for it?”

“Of course I’m up for it -- I’ve gone up against things that’re way worse than a haunted house. I just need someone who I can grab when I’m scared. Plus I need someone to make sure I don’t accidentally punch one of the guys working there.”

“Oh well, for all we know, the haunted house isn’t even scary. There could be really cheap tricks from the shack.”

“Better safe than sorry, right? I’m going in there assuming everything is going to scare me, that way I’m not taken by surprise or scared even more than I was expecting.”

“Normally I’d be cool with getting physical if random strangers were coming at us with chainsaws and swords and claws, but since it’s all supposed to be fake, I guess we’ll both have to keep our hands to ourselves.”

“I kind of already agreed to go with Mabel because my experiences with Halloween are kind of limited. But I’m sure you could come with us! The more the merrier! And that’s more people to protect me from zombies.”

“Going as a trio sounds like a solid plan for the haunted house, but don’t worry, I haven’t had a ton of experience with Halloween either. Where I’m from, we don’t celebrate it -- heck, I didn’t even know it was an actual holiday ‘til I moved here. And I’m trained in hand-to-hand combat, so I can totally handle any zombies that come at us.”

“True, but then I’ll look like I’m too scared to go on my own and I’ll never hear the end of it from my friends.”

“Again with the Squid nickname? And I have a lot to lose, actually -- the wand I’m asking you to watch is a pretty big deal to my family. If I lose it, I’d be in big trouble.”

“Everyone who goes to haunted houses go just to say that they did, at least you get good candy though.”

“Guess I’m another statistic then, ‘cause I’m actually going just so I can say that I did. It’ll make me sound a lot cooler if I mention I didn’t chicken out of going in. But if there’s candy involved, that’s even more incentive to go.”
