when the world ended in nuclear fire, the people selected for inhumane experiments became the overwhelming majority of the human race. though, mercy keller wasn’t born for over a century later. she was born in relative peace in the vault, although the term is relative granted that each year they sacrifice one to the vault in order to keep the rest alive. she would see the end of this.
born to john and addie, mercy’s name was given to her almost as a plea, a request to remember their daughter and spare their lives. she never felt like a bargaining chip, even if that’s part of what she was. insurance. belonging to the most powerful voting bloc, she didn’t have much to fear as a young child. they had space, they had food, even a few teddy bears, but nothing ever is calm in a vault-tec experiment, and nothing truly ever goes as planned. when a bout of sickness overcame the vault, addie, the resources manager, opted to give the medicine to the people who needed it, going against protocol and designated rations. this worked well for those who were sick, but reproduction wasn’t quick enough and took another woman’s life only months later. when it was time to vote for the next overseer, and the next sacrifice, addie was selected.
the next year was filled with pain, one mercy couldn’t quite understand, and it was filled with a coldness a year later when her mother went into her office and never again emerged. she took it better than her father, who was heartbroken, and she took it upon herself to step up and take care of him, refusing to lose both parents. she did whatever she could to stay in everybody’s good graces, a few things she regrets among them.
chaos emerged when she had barely turned seventeen. katherine stone was elected to overseer, and issued her decree ‘overseer order 745’ which changed the election process to a random selection. when this caused an uproar among the vault, mercy agreed that it wasn’t a good idea. maybe in theory, but that theory put her friends, her father, and herself at risk. she supported the coup that was put into place by her bloc, the justice bloc, in order to reverse the order and restore order to the home that they were all trapped in. the violence that ensued took the lives of nearly all the vault-dwellers, sparing mercy but condemning her peaceful father, who was against the idea in the first place.
her guilt combined with her headstrong personality led her to try to take the charge with the other four survivors that remained. she, having been from the most powerful bloc, was an easy voice to be listened to, despite her young age. all five survivors came to the same conclusion: if they kept doing this they would all end up dead anyway, so what was the point? they refused to give the vault the sacrifice required, and with that, their pipboys congratulated them and the door that had remained sealed for almost two decades opened, granting them their freedom.
the other four delve into chaos once more, overcome with the guilt that she had already felt for helping incite the violence. but she wasn’t ready to die, even if she felt more dead than before with the loss of her father. she tries everything she can to convince them to just leave – to weather the wasteland, but they’re set on ending it right there, as intended. and it does. four gunshots ring out, mercy holsters her weapon and walks out the door and into the mojave wasteland.

i need you . i want you . her eyes rise and from that moment forward , they are glued to his . she takes in every syllable of every word . being a ‘ they ’ will take work and time ; she will have to learn and she will have to watch him , reprogramming herself to see things differently . there’s a calm that has settled over them and finally they’re recognizable again . she knows this soft face . she knows this hand on her cheek . she knows that this is the man she loves ; who loves her . emori’s thoughts are sensations , not words , and she can’t figure out how to express them .
she nods , chin falling as the exhaustion hits her harder than before . tears form in her eyes but she blinks them back ; she doesn’t want to cry . emori wraps her arms around bellamy’s torso and buries her face in his shirt , head not quite reaching the crook of his neck . she exhales . “ i love you , ” she whispers , eyes shut and voice soft . it’s bot want and need . it was a choice to know him , to decide to spend time with him , to kiss him that first night . those were wants . but feeling empty last night because she might be losing him ? feeling cold without his body warming her bed ? she had grown too accustomed to his presence ; she needed him now . both her hands clutch at his back , feeling his skin under the soft fabric . this is all she has to say : “ i love you . ”
he notices when things have shifted. when her face softens, and he feels like he can really gaze into dark eyes that are now somehow brighter. none of this had felt right. the distance, the fighting, his initial spark to this whole thing. he may be more rational than he was on the ground, but bellamy is still very much heart, diving into things without looking beforehand. those emotions had CONSUMED him, and maybe he would have to learn to rely on her, even in his worst moments, to weather the storm. but he trusted her. full-heartedly. and he hopes that he can prove that to her. but bellamy’s always been a dreamer, and a protector, but he’s found that the world has almost made it IMPOSSIBLE to be both, even one. but she’s given him a second chance, and he can’t let her down -- not like he’s let down the deceased and the lost in his life.
he’s not very tall, but emori is tiny. he has to drop his head in kind, lips pressed to the top of her head as strong arms wrap around her, telling her that HE’S GOT HER. he would be there for her. he would protect her, though lord knows she doesn’t really need it. her independence and her mind are two of the reasons that he had fallen for her on this cold ship. pressing a kiss to her head, he raises his own, glancing down at her. he swallow as fingers come to her chin, lifting her head so she will SEE HIM when he returns those words. ‘ i love you. ‘ he doesn’t include the too, that would make it an afterthought. a response. but this isn’t just a response, it’s a DECLARATION. and a promise. he cups her face again now, thumb brushing over her cheek. ‘ always comes back. doesn’t matter what was said, what was done. i don’t want to end a day without you. ‘
